Song of the Day - Mesmerized - Faith Evans

Have you ever heard about that thing
I mean, that real thing...

Here's a song to wake you up and get you going on a lazy Sunday.  This classic is heavy on disco beats, big on Ms. Evans' vocals, and a whole lotta fun...

Song of the Day - Faith - Calvin Harris

I need a little space in my mind
I need that little hope I can find
I need a little, I need a little faith
Is that too much to ask for?

I need to feel my soul come alive
I need to feel the strength to get by
I need a little, I need a little faith
Is that too much to ask for?

One of my favorite tracks off Calvin Harris' new album, Motion, is the opener, Faith.  Harris himself takes on the lead vocals and it's really the only song that reminds me of the Calvin Harris I first came to know and love on his 2009 Ready for the Weekend.  Check this one out...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Don't You Want Me - Jody Watley

The year was 1987, and former Shalamar singer Jody Watley broke out on her own in a huge way with her eponymous debut album.  The record was chock full of great mid to up tempo R&B tunes that easily worked on dance floors, songs like Looking For a New Love, Some Kind of Lover, Still a Thrill and this one, my personal favorite.  Don't You Want Me clicked on all cylinders, cracking the top ten on the R&B, Dance and Hot 100 charts.  Watley garnered a Grammy for Best New Artist based on this one and deservedly so.  I remember this was out when I had first met my ex, Joe, and we both had copies that got played out big time.  So sit back, click play and groove to this one...

Song of the Day - We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off - Jermaine Stewart

Here's a song I've been wanting to post for a few days now, ever since I heard a not so great remake of it on Robin Schulz' recent album, Prayer,  Jermaine Stewart's one and only hit, which came out in 1986, has one of those hooks that is so catchy you can't help but rock out to it whenever you hear it.  In fact, one of the things that iced using this song was that I saw a really good 80's cover band, Oel Amor, last night for my friend Sean's birthday and they covered it, sending the whole crowd into dance mode.  Oh yeah, I remember dancing to this one in my bedroom...

Song of the Day - Dangerous - David Guetta, featuring Sam Martin

David Guetta makes a return to the music scene with the release of his sixth studio album, Listen, which is now available on iTunes.  Though the album was released just three days ago, this song, featuring Sam Martin on vocals, is its fifth single and I'm sorry to say that I am not impressed with any of the songs I've heard thus far.  The new stuff signals a change in Guetta's funky dance stylings that's a far cry from his last two smash albums, 2011's Nothing But the Beat and his previous breakthrough smash, One Love.

Guetta singlehandedly became the first of a new type of musical artist, the disc jockey/producer, who would consistently collaborate with the days biggest stars and make songs that would hit the mainstream big time.  Tunes such as Titanium with Sia, One Love featuring Estelle, Turn Me On with Nicki Minaj, Sexy Bitch with Akon and so many others were all monster hits that were heard all the time on dance floors and radio stations around the world.

Like all musical acts, though, David Guetta's style has changed and to me it's no longer got that mainstream dance feel to it that I love so much.  The new stuff has got a more hardcore, rockish edge to it, which is not normally my style. That's not to say I won't download the entire album.  There are other tracks that look promising, including this one and others that feature stars such as Emile Sandé, Nico and Vance, John Legend, Nicki Minaj once again, as well as other artists who may or may not mesh well with the deejay/producer's new style.  We shall see...

Song of the Day - Outside - Calvin Harris, featuring Ellie Goulding

So far the best single off of Calvin Harris' new album, Motion, Outside has been getting more and more airtime on my iPod lately.  The song couldn't be more perfect for uniquely soft/raspy-voiced Ellie Goulding and it's got a great dance music track, too!  Check it out...

Song of the Day - Forever - Chris Brown

Feels like I've waited my whole life
For this one night
It's gonna be me, you and the dance floor

I came into today's post not really knowing what song I was going to put up.  I took a look at the iTunes chart for the day and it is teeny bopper city, that is all Taylor Swift and One Direction (I know, they're not really teeny boppers anymore!).  I mean, who seems to own the heavy consumer hand in the music world?  You?  Me?  Eh eh, it's the good ole fashioned American teenage girl, who's got a crush on the boys from across the pond and wanna be just like their All American grown-up pop star.

Okay, okay, so I put up a couple of Taylor Swift songs in the past couple of weeks.  I didn't say I hated her, or One Direction for that matter, but please...they're not the only thing out there!  So since I've been going strong on a lot of new stuff lately, I've been forgetting that I can post an older tune anytime and not just on Friday.  So the other night, while my pal Kyle and I were eating dinner, the song I Can Only Imagine, by David Guetta with Chris Brown, came on and our conversation turned for a minute to the bad-ass imaged singer.

I like Chris Brown's music, my buddy mused.  His dance stuff is great!

I believe the same thing...Brown does have a voice that lends itself well to the dance floor.  And here's one that Kyle mentioned by name, one of my favorites of Brown's which I hadn't heard in a long time.  So yeah, it's Thursday, and we can definitely get lost on the dance floor in our minds as we plod through our days...Forever...

Song of the Day - Changes - Faul & Wad Ad & Pnau (Robin Schulz Remix)

Baby I don't know
Just why I love you so
Maybe it's just the way
That God made me this day

Ever since hearing Robin Schulz's remix of the mesmerizing Prayer in C, I've kept an eye open on the German deejay/producer and I recently discovered, and downloaded, his newest set of remixes called simply Prayer.  Of all the new music I've downloaded recently, this album is the most pleasing overall. Changes is the opening cut on Prayer and it's another sort of mesmerizing tune that features a chorus of children on vocals in front of a chilly, groovy music track.   Check it out and have an awesome Saturday!

Song of the Day - Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi, Afrojack, and Steve Aioki

Tell me what you know about dreamin dreamin
you don't really know about nothin nothin
tell me what you know about them night terrors every night
5 am, cold sweats wakin up to the skies
tell me what you know about dreams, dreams
tell me what you know about night terrors, nothin
you don't really care about the trials of tomorrow
rather lay awake in a bed full of sorrow

I'm on the pursuit of happiness and
I know everything that shines ain't always gonna be gold
I'll be fine once I get it,

I'll be good

I've posted a couple of tunes off of this awesome dance mix CD called Casablanca Nights in the past couple of months, including the loungey and melodic Colors and the bouncy, happy Just Girly Things, and now we bring out another track from the deep-voiced rapper, Kid Cudi with the hypnotic and very applicable to us all, Pursuit of Happiness.  Great dance jam!

Song of the Day - Delirious - Steve Aoki, Chris Lake Tujamo, feat Kid Ink

Happy November y'all!  We begin a brand new month with a very high energy dance floor jam by deejay/producer Steve Aoki, along with a little help from his friends.  Though it's starting to get cold out there, we can all certainly keep warm dancing to this one...

Song of the Day - The Days - Avicii

Under the tree where the grass don't grow
We made a promise to never get old..

Avicii is back with a brand new song, and this one's got star power.  Former Brit teen idol Robbie Williams, who did make quite a name for himself after his days with Take That.  With several top selling albums, as well as seven #1 singles in his native U.K., Williams takes the vocals on this melancholic and melodic tune that's both a nice follow-up to Avicii's best selling True and a nice lead-in to his next album, Stories.  The new record is set to include other stars, as well, including Coldplay's Chris Martin, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, and Jon Bon Jovi.  Oh, I am definitely looking forward to that one, but in the meantime we've got The Days...

Song of the Day - Coming Home - Gorgon City

Today's song is from a British electronica duo I only recently discovered, though they've been around for a couple of years already.  I just downloaded their brand new album, Sirens, and this is the record's opening cut, a pleasant, head-bopping tune that fits well equally as a hypnotic lounge song or a late-night dance floor groove.  Check out Coming Home...

Song of the Day - Say My Name - Odesza, featuring Zyra

Here's a sweet little dance tune by electronic duo Odesza.  It's from their sophomore effort, In Return, and from the sounds of it and the looks of their popularity, these two are ones to watch, for sure...

Song of the Day - Ten Feet Tall - Afrojack, feat. Wrabel

I'd purchased the latest album from Afrojack a few months ago and after a few listens, I forgot about it, even though I really, really liked it.  Well just recently I've returned to Forget the World and remembered a few gems, including this one featuring American singer Wrabel, who sounds to me a lot like Max George of The Wanted.  It's a really nice song!  So check out Ten Feet Tall and have a Happy Thursday...

Song of the Day - Land of the Living - Kristine W

Last night my friend Kyle told me he admired me as a person because he sees me as someone who lives life. I take this as a great complement, as I do try my best to make the most of what I've got. Shouldn't everybody?  Anyway, his thoughts were sparked by another song he was sharing with me about living life, which I can't for the life of me remember at the moment,  So here's the next best thing...

Song of the Day - I Like You - Katy B

It's a beautiful fall Saturday and my mind is wandering towards the city, more specifically clubs and dancing.  It's been such a long time!  Anyway, here's a dance music chick from the U.K. who's got a way about her.  I first discovered Katy B via Shazam while I was shopping for clothes one day last year and I've been hooked ever since.  All of her songs have this same type of hypnotic groove that's irresistible and oh so dance floor, and here's one of em...

Song of the Day - Love More - Chris Brown, featuring Nicki Minaj

Here's a steamy tune for your hump day, courtesy of Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj, and it's still steamy even though it's the clean version.  I'll say it again, love him or hate him, even though he started out singing R&B, he fits perfectly within the dance music world and here's another reason why...

Song of the Day - Turn the Beat Around - Vickie Sue Robinson

There's a reason for today's Song of the Day and it's all related to last night's Sea Tea cruise in NYC. You see, last night was the last cruise of the season and my friend Rich suggested we attend.  It turned out to be a perfect day yesterday, cool, comfortable temperatures and awesome skies, and of course, the beautiful backdrop of the NYC skyline, so we were hoping for a great night out on the boat to end the season.  Well, as I've said in previous posts, the makings of a night on the Sea Tea has a lot to do with the music that's being played.  When the deejay is spot on, it's great, but when he's not....ugh!  Unfortunately, such was the case last night.

Though unadvertised, it seemed as if last night's theme was disco, because that's all that was played from beginning to end, which is okay, really, There are plenty of great disco songs out there, and an evening of great disco music can make for a nice evening.  DJ Robbie Leslie played a few of them...snippets of Last Dance, Heaven Must've Sent You, Electric Dreams and such blared out of the speakers, whose sound was a bit muffled, as well.  The rest of the evening, as my friend Dita put it, was "a whole bunch of B-sides from old disco songs that nobody knows."  Now I've been around the block a few times, and I did more than 12 years as a deejay myself, and even I hardly knew much of what was played last night.

I love to dance, especially in that atmosphere, but when the music is obscure it's not so much fun! The mark of a good deejay is one who watches his audience and plays accordingly.  Keeping in mind that guests of a place like the Sea Tea, just like the guests at a wedding, come to dance, and they're gonna dance no matter what is played, the dance floor is not always an indicator of how good he music is.  I used to watch people's mouths when I deejayed, to see if they were singing along.  That's surely a sign that they're enjoying the music.  With the exception of a few songs, no one was singing along for most of the evening, and for good reason,  They didn't know the songs!  The deejay was playing what he liked, and that's really too bad because it could have been a perfect night of dancing instead of an okay night waiting for something good to come on...Ugh!

So here's a real disco song, whose title would surely send a message to DJ Robbie Leslie.  You shouldda turned those beats around dude...
