Song of the Day - Carry On - Donna Summer

Happy Monday! We continue our Donna Summer tribute with one of her more recent hits, a song which united Summer with Giorgio Moroder, her long-time partner in crime during her disco years. The song was originally recorded in 1992 for a Moroder album, and was included on Donna's Anthology set the following year. It took awhile for the song to catch on, but catch on it did, as it became a #1 dance song almost five years later, in 1997.

Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder

"Carry On" is a pleasant, easy-going dance song that's a little bit melancholy. It's very melodic and very contemporary, even today, and the tune earned Donna her fifth Grammy Award for Best Dance Record of 1997. Take a look at a (German, I believe) television show in which the two reunited to perform the song on stage. The video quality isn't that great, but luckily the sound is perfect and Donna looks oh so good.  Enjoy!

Take a Ride on Leviathan: All New Giga Coaster at Canada's Wonderland

Here's another new coaster for 2012, which is shaping up to be an awesome year for new rides. Leviathan is what is known as a giga coaster, which refers to a coaster that reaches upwards of 300 feet in height and moves around in a complete circuit. There aren't many in the world as of yet, but their numbers are growing.

These types of thrill rides pick up a lot of speed simply from the height of the thing and usually riders get lots and lots of airtime from the many hills that exist on such a ride. Giga's are simply a bigger spin on what used to be known as a 'hyper coaster,' which are famous for high hills and fast speeds, like Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point or Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure, two of my personal favorites. Up until now I've only ridden one giga: Millennium Force (308 feet) at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, and man was it awesome!

Leviathan stands at a height of 306 feet and at 92 miles per hour speeds, it is the 8th fastest coaster in the world.  The ride opened on April 27th and I'm sure it's more thrilling to ride than to watch it on video.  Too bad it was an empty ride...no screams!

Canada's Wonderland is operated by Cedar Fair and it is located Vaughn, Ontario, Canada, about 40 minutes from downtown Toronto.  Check out the park's website here for more.

Check out these other new rides for 2012:

X-Flight, Six Flags Great America, Chicago, IL

Mr. Freeze, Six Flags Arlington, TX and St. Louis, MO

Swarm, Thorpe Amusement Park, Surrey, England

Wild Eagle, Dollywood, Pigeon Forge, TN

Disco loses a second star in less than a week: R.I.P. Robin Gibb

Oh man, it's been a rough week for disco! First, Donna Summer passes away from cancer on Thursday and now Robin Gibbs finally succumbed to his own bout with the terrible disease earlier today. Donna was 63 years old. Robin was 62. Though I was never a huge fan of the Bee Gees, their contributions to the genre in the 1970's were enormous and yes, there are a few songs of theirs I liked, including this one. Rest in Peace Robin!

Feelin' the Love!

Well, today is Sunday, a four full days after my surgery, and I am recuperating slowly, but surely.  As I said before, this surgery was not a pleasant one, and in order to heal quickly my doctor gave me strict orders to not physically exert myself in any way for at least a week.  Whether he told me that or not, the way I've been feeling, I couldn't do much anyway.

With that said, for the first time in my life I've had to depend on people to help me get things done, things that I wouldn't ordinarily need help with and I just wanted to take a moment to say how lucky I am to have good friends upon whom I can depend.

My class' journal question for last week was an all time favorite of mine:

Is it more important to have a lot of friends or just a few really good ones?

Well, I know how I would answer that question.  to me, having a lot of friends may do wonders for your status on Facebook or Twitter or any social setting in between, but when you have just a few, true friends, then you are one rich person, and my experiences during this past week have backed that up.

The mornings of and after my surgery, several people kept checking up on me to see how I was doing, and they all still are.  Whether you've had experience or not on either end of this equation, let me tell you that just a phone call or a text goes a very long way.  All of these guys came in with offers of help in any way and though I truly appreciated them, at first I didn't think I'd need any help.  But then I was alone and somewhat incapacitated at home...

First up, Nancy Lou

The first person to come by was my friend Nancy Lou, who wanted to check up on me Friday and bring me some breakfast.  Before he got there, I had of course already made my morning cup of coffee and discovered that my milk had gone bad.  Normally I would have just run out quickly, but since I was on the "Perc," I couldn't, and so a quick phone call to Nance and voila: milk!

Reet, Dit, Blanche and Max

Four other friends have all pitched in this week to help me out when I needed it most.  My besties Dita and Blanche have been there virtually every day offering help, and this morning Blanche took me to run a few errands that needed to get done.  Thanks guys!

Rita felt that I must've been feeling cooped up in the house too long yesterday and offered to come pick me up and take me to lunch at the diner.  Yummy gyro!  Thanks Reet!

And then there's Max, one of my very first students who graduated years ago, but still keeps in touch with Mr. M. from time to time.  Max just happened to have a free afternoon yesterday and called to see if I was doing anything.  He ended up coming by to hang out for awhile.  He took me to the store to buy some cigs and when we got back I had noticed that my lawn needed cutting.  Within five minutes, Max was there, mowing away.  I was truly touched!

So, yeah, I'd say I'm a pretty lucky person to have such great people in my life.  And I get to thank them all in this special, sappy way that I have at my disposal.  While I'm at it, thanks to my other pals Laura Kim, Terry, Kim and Lori for taking the time to check in on me.  Who knows, maybe your turn to help is coming...  Lol!

Okay, I've gotta get up now and move around.  Man, recuperating is a bitch!
