February 29th, 2012 - Writing Wednesday

Today is February 29th, "Leap Day," and it's been two weeks since I last caught you up on the things I've been putting out. Since I stayed away from writing most of my vacation last week, there wasn't much to share, but by now there are a few things...

Look closely at the missing limbs on these crash test dummies

Gather

Earlier today I made my return to Gather with a piece on a new roller coaster. The coaster, "The Swarm," made news earlier this week when crash test dummies lost several limbs during a test run. The coaster will be debuting March 15th at Thorpe Park in Surrey, England, and even if I was close-by, I think that this is one I would not try. Check out the piece, England Park's New Coaster Pushes the Limits of Fear and Safety, and check out a video test run of the new post-apocalyptic war themed coaster:

Rihanna's "Birthday Cake"

Last week the buzz in music was all about RiRi's new remix for her song, "Birthday Cake," and at first I believed it might have been Christina Aguilera, but then the rumors started to twirl around that it would be none other than the Notorious B.R.O.W.N., which it turned out to be. Not a good move by either of them, as I talk about in Down and Dirrrty and in Poor Taste.

These Guys Are Crazy! The Birdmen Free Falling In Norway

Last night my pal Rich told me about this segment on last Sunday's "60 Minutes" about the craziest extreme sport I'd ever heard of. I decided to check it out myself and you can take a look for yourself below. These dudes literally jump off mountains literally a mile high in Norway wearing special kinds of winged/webbed suits and free-fall perilously close to the rocks and one another in one of the craziest things I've ever seen. Rest in Peace Davy Jones

By this time I'm sure most of you have heard about the sudden death of Davy Jones, one of the original teen heartthrobs of all time. Jones passed away earlier today of a heart attack at the young age of 66 years, and fans all over are paying tribute to the late British singer and actor. As one who grew up on reruns of "The Monkees," I, too, am saddened by Davy's passing and I couldn't let his death go without mention here on John's World.

Herein is one of my favorite Monkees tunes, one that still resonates today. Enjoy the song and Rest in Peace Davy!

Song of the Day - Mickey - Toni Basil

Ever since Madonna came out with "Gimme All Your Luvin," I've wanted to post this, the original cheerleading song. Toni Basil's "Mickey" is a definite classic, and I found this 'alternate' video she shot for the BBC with a back-up band instead of the cheerleaders. It's kinda fun! Enjoy and Happy Hump Day!

Song of the Day - Girl Gone Wild - Madonna

Yesterday, Madonna released the second single from her forthcoming "M.D.N.A." album, and though "Gimme All Your Luvin" was questionable as a single, this one is definitely not! People were saying it all day yesterday and I have to agree that it's a lot like the music from her classic "Confessions on a Dance Floor" album, which was full of hot, late night disco-type dance songs.

So check out the funky "Girl Gone Wild"...Oh, and of course there's controversy about the title, which has been changed from "Girls," so as not to be confused with the seedy, but popular video series by Mr. Joe Francis...oh I can just hear the haters now!

Song of the Day - Do Something - Macy Gray

Get up, get out
And do somethin'
Don't let the days of your life pass you by
You got to
Get up, get out
And do somethin'
How will you make it if you never even try
Get up, get out
And do somethin'
Can't spend your whole life tryin' to get high
You got to get up, get out
And do somethin'
'Cause you and I have to do
For you and I

Today is Monday and I need a swift kick in the butt so I decided to start my first day back at work with a little advice from Ms. Macy Gray. As always, whenever I'm on vacation I never seem to take advantage of the free time to get what I need to get done, and now that it's time to get back to work I think I will listen to this one a few times and start doing some things...

The song is one of my favorites off of Macy's first album, "On How Life Is." The record is full of great tunes, like the stellar "I Try," the funky "Caligula," and the tender "Still." It's definitely worth a pick up if you love some funky R&B mixed with some great, meaningful ballads and oh that voice!

Today's song is dedicated to my friend Paul, who played this one in the car last night and stuck it in my head, lol. It's from Gaga's first album, "Fame/Fame Monster," and it's a nice, catchy tune. Today we dig all the way back to 1984 with the silly, funky and the very 80's R&B stylings of all-girl group Klymaxx. You may remember this group for their smash hit ballad, "I Miss You," but I find this one to be just a lil more fun! Especially check out the rap parts by singer Bernadette Cooper...hysterical! Chris Brown and Rihanna - Down and Dirrrty and in Poor Taste!

Well there's been a lot of chatter and guessing about Rihanna's newest collaboration the past couple of weeks and now finally we all know who it is. As people have been guessing, the guest vocalist on the remix of "Birthday Cake" is none other than Chris Brown, Rihanna's former boyfriend and current who-the-hell-knows-what.

When the Chris Brown/Rihanna began to swirl last week, the Internet was all abuzz because...well, of course...that would be bona fide news. But as of last Friday, those Brown rumors were purportedly quashed, as "Birthday Cake" producers Da Internz "confirmed via ... tweet that it would not be Chris Brown featured on the song," and silly me, I believed em! I wouldn't have cared if it was Brown or not guesting on the new remix," but after listening too it, I have to say I lost some respect for the two of them.

The two singers took to their Twitter pages on Monday to announce their collaboration on one another's songs (Rihanna also appears on a remix to Brown's "Turn Up the Music."). They expressed an "f-you" attitude over what people might think:

Rihanna: They can say whatever, Ima do wahtever... No pain is forever <----- YUP! YOU KNOW THIS

Brown: Let them be mad!!!!! We make music. Don't like it, don't listen! Turn up the music remix is coming soon too! Guess who's on it?

So, Rihanna's forgiven Chris. That's just fine. I never went along with judging him anyway...I leave judging to a higher power. I think the man is talented and yes, I even like some of his songs, and I never let that incident interfere with that. It's RiRi's prerogative how she wants to proceed in her relationship with Brown, but what I'm having trouble with here is the song itself.

To me, this "shocking" collaboration is like a big middle finger to the world, especially from Rihanna. Working together is one thing, but using such vulgarity in the new lyrics is mocking the past, and that's without even mentioning the tweets. Take a look at Brown's part in the song:

"Girl I wanna f**k you right now
Been a long time I been missing your body
Lemme turn the lights down
When I wanna go down it's a private party
Ooh, it's not even her birthday
But I wanna lick that icing out
Give it to her in the worst way
I can't wait to blow the candles out
I want that...."

Do they really need to be that nasty? I know the song is 'dirrrty' already, but these lyrics are just too downright explicit and real life...way too much information for us. I've always been a big fan Rihanna's music, but not this. It's being dirty for vulgarity's sake and it's totally unnecessary, and to me it's as if they're saying to us, "Yeah, that's right. Something really bad happened between us once, and y'all got all worked up about it, but you know what? We don't care and we just wanna get down and nasty with each other , no matter what you all think."

I never mind a little naughtiness in music...there's already plenty of it on "Talk That Talk," but this goes way beyond for me and is, in my opinion, in poor taste. Whether they like it or not, both of them serve as role models for youngsters, and in this remix, they serve as poster boy and girl of how not to be. This is one Rihanna record I will not be downloading!

Song of the Day - We Are Young - Fun, featuring Janelle Monáe

After a day away from any sort of online access, we return with a belated Song of the Day, a hot one from newcomer Fun. As I post this, "We Are Young" is steaming at #1 on iTunes singles sales chart. I'm still not sure what exactly to make of the song, but it does seem to resonate with people. Perhaps it was the recent cover of the song on Glee???? Anyway, enjoy...and Happy Hump Day!

Song of the Day - Begging Me - Florrie

Florrie is a British singer, songwriter, drummer and model who has had relatively little exposure until recently, though she does have a knack for making very pleasant pop music. A Facebook friend of mine first turned me on to Florrie and I was immediately hooked by the great sound of the songs.

The feel of this one is kind of electronic 80's, with a contemporary twist, almost like a song from LaRoux. It's pleasant and rhythmic and I hope you check it out...it's pretty good!

February 19th, 2012 - My body is my own worst enemy

Warning: Grossness Ahead...

Good morning and Happy Sunday! Winter vacation started yesterday and so far it’s been a real dud because I am sick, but I am going to forge on with my plans anyway, which includes a trip to Atlantic City, and of course some clubbing towards the end of the week…

This is not me, but a typical example of what a cyst looks like on someone's back once it becomes infected

My body is my own worst enemy

Oy, sometimes I just hate my body! I’ve got problems up the yin yang, notwithstanding this awful cold I’m fighting. You see, for most of my adult life, I’ve had a problem with cysts. I believe they’re called Sebaceous cysts, and every now and again they pop up on the back of my neck, on my back, and in other places. They’re very painful, embarrassing and annoying all at once, and lately I think God has been playing “wack-a-cyst” with me, as for the past five weeks or so I’ve had about five of them, each popping up in a new place once another has cleared.

The dermatologist told me that there was nothing concrete I could do to make them go away forever, and that I was just born with bad skin. That’s just great! He put me on some medication which has helped a little, but not nearly enough. In the meantime, all I can do is do my best to wait it out, taking lots of hot baths, which is the nice part, and hoping they’ll go away quickly.

Today is the fifth straight day I’ve been dealing with this current one, the last one literally clearing up six days ago. I’ve taken three baths in the past 24 hours and hopefully it’ll be clear by the morning. This one’s been the most painful and I can’t wait till it’s gone. So far I don’t see anything else popping up anywhere so the fingers are crossed.

A silly home remedy

I once tried a home remedy that my pal Dita thought was hysterically funny and still talks about to this day. I got it from Joe’s mom when I had a really large one on my chest and was exasperated trying to get it to go away. That cyst was so large I looked like I had three boobies on my chest. Blech! Anyway, the home remedy was to tape a piece of rye bread (why rye, I’ll never know!) with some sugar on it over the cyst. Supposedly it draws out the gunk. I know, eeewww. Well, it didn’t work for me, but if anyone out there has any other good home remedies for cysts that work, please tell me.

Grossness

Besides the pain and the discomfort of getting cysts, there is the grossness of it. Eventually, in order for them to go away, they’ve got to drain, and that’s where it can get really gross. There are some people out there who find a strange fascination with this, namely my pal Dita and both of my ex’s, who each liked to pop the non-painful ones off my back.

Now I don’t want to gross you out here, so instead I’m going to post a link to a video if you can handle it and want to see it. It is probably one of the grossest things I’ve ever seen…a woman draining a cyst off someone’s back. Warning, this is NOT for the queasy:

Huge Cyst Extraction

So there’s a blog post for you, huh? I know it’s a really gross topic, but I put it out there for anyone whoo suffers the same way I do, just so they know they’re not alone. And if you are a sufferer who just happens to be reading this, please let me know so I know that I’m not alone with this icky, terrible condition! As always, thanks for reading!

Song of the day - Ride On Time - Black Box

Today's "Song of the Day" is pure dance joy from the early 90's. Black Box was an Italian house music group that made a wonderful dance album called "Dreamland" back in 1990. With such chart topping hits as "Everybody, Everybody," "Strike It Up," and this one, their first album, "Dreamland," was a staple in my CD player for a couple of years.

During this time in music history, there were a lot of uncredited vocals out there (think Milli Vanilli), and Black Box was one of the major culprits. Powerhouse singer and former Weather Girl Martha Wash's vocals were often used, most famously by this group and C&C Music Factory, with more svelte runway models providing a face to the voice. This one samples Loleatta Holloway's disco smash, "Love Sensation," and it is her vocals that make this one such a good dance song. Holla if you remember dancing to this one!

Song of the Day - Step by Step - Whitney Houston

Today is Saturday, February 18th, 2012, the day that Whitney Houston will be laid to rest, and I wanted to mark the occasion with one last tribute to the fallen star.

"Step by Step" is a song Whitney recorded for the 1996 movie "The Preacher's Wife." The song was originally written and recorded by Annie Lennox and reworked into more of a down-home gospel tune by Houston. It was the first time in a long time she'd done anything up tempo and the song became a success as it climbed to #15 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart. Junior Vazquez' remix of the song also made for a nice dance floor ditty! Enjoy!

Step By Step - The Preacher's Wife (Original Soundtrack Album)

Step by Step

Well there's a bridge and there's a river that I still must cross
As I'm going on my journey
Oh, I might be lost

And there's a road I have to follow, a place I have to go
Well no-one told me just how to get there
But when I get there I'll know
Cuz I'm taking it

Step By Step, Bit by Bit,
Stone By Stone (Yeah), Brick by Brick (Oh, yeah)
Step By Step, Day By Day, Mile by mile (ooh, ooh, ooh)

And this old road is rough and ruined
So many dangers along the way
So many burdens might fall upon me
So many troubles that I have to face

Oh, but I won't let my spirit fail me
Oh, I won't let my spirit go
Until I get to my destination
I'm gonna take it slowly cuz I'm making it mine

Step By Step (you know I'm taking it), bit by bit (bit by bit, come move),
stone by stone (yeah), brick by brick (brick by brick by brick by brick mmm...)
Step by step (step by step uh-huh), day by day (day by day-ee),
mile by mile (ooh), go your own way.

Say it, baby, don't give up
You got to hold on to what you got,
Oh, baby, don't give up,
You got to keep on moving on don't stop (yeah yeah).
I know you're hurting, and i know you're blue,
i know you're hurting but don't let the bad things get to you.

I'm taking it step by step (ohohoh), bit by bit (bit by bit come move),
stone by stone (stone by stone yeah), brick by brick (brick by brick by brick by brick),
Step by step (i'm gonna take it now),day by day (day by day-ee),
mile by mile (ooh), go your own way!

(c'mon baby got to keep moving),
(i'm taking it step by step), bit by bit,
stone by stone (yeah, stone by stone), brick by brick
c'mon baby,
step by step keep on moving, day by day (day by day-ee),
mile by mile by mile by mile,go your own way,
c'mon baby got to keep moving, bit by bit (bit by bit, bit by bit)....

Who's the big "surprise" guest spot on RiRi's "Birthday Cake"? It's anyone's guess

Almost two weeks ago, I commented on a report in the NY Post that hinted at a Christina Aguilera guest spot on Rihanna's remix version of "Birthday Cake" (Will Christina soon be licking the icing off Rihanna's "Birthday Cake?"). Rihanna tweeted her followers a couple of weeks back:

I put collaborator on it, who would u wanna see lick the icing off????? #CAKE...I need somebody #DIRRRTY on my Birthday #CAKE ;) lol.

Of course, the folks at the Post and many others would have believed it to be "Dirrrty" singer Christina. Since that time, though, the rumors have been swirling up big time about this 'surprise' guest spot on the album, and X-Tina's name hasn't come up again. Instead, the biggest name being thrown around is none other than Chris Brown, RiRi's infamous ex. Brown's name began to circulate after Rihanna's production team, Da Internz, tweeted that the featured guest vocal on the track would "shock the world."

Of course, that would definitely be a shock, especially after what transpired between the two a little over three years ago. In the week surrounding the Grammy Awards, at which they both performed, it was reported that Brown had attended Rihanna's birthday party, and so came the fuel for the rumors.

There have been reports on both sides of this story, with and without Brown guesting on the track, but Da Internz confirmed via another tweet that it would not be Chris Brown featured on the song. At this point, it's all just speculation. We'll just have to wait for the song to be released to find out who the guest vocalist will really be, which could come as early as this week. I'm still pulling for Christina...or Madonna...Nicki Minaj, maybe, lol...

Music News: VH1's Greatest Women; Madonna's 38th Top Ten; Whitney Love

All this week, the music channel VH1 has been counting down its’ list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music, and the big winner is…you guessed it, Madonna! The five-hour miniseries is the latest in the popular Greatest countdowns aired on the network, and this one concludes tonight, Friday, February 17th at 10PM. This particular list only takes into account the past 20 years, during which time Madge has been at her most popular.

Here’s a list of the top ten greatest women, according to VH1:

#10 – P!nk
#9 – Mary J. Blige
#8 – Christina Aguilera
#7 – Janet Jackson
#6 – Whitney Houston
#5 – Adele
#4 – Lady Gaga
#3 – Beyonce
#2 – Mariah Carey
#1 – Madonna

The list is pretty good, but not perfect in my eyes. I have no idea what VH1’s criteria was for choosing these ladies in this particular order, but if you’re going by the last 20 years, then I’d say there would be many on the list who’d be further atop the list than newer artists like Adele or Lady Gaga. Hmmm, I may just have to come up with my own list…

Other great ladies found on my iPod who made the list include Britney Spears (#11), Alannis Morissette (#15), Katy Perry (#17), Missy Elliott (#18), Kelly Clarkson (#19), Rihanna (#20), Sade (#30), Cher (#31), Shakira (#36), Nicki Minaj (#40), Kylie Minogue (#47), Nelly Furtado (#51), Macy Gray (#70), Natalie Merchant (#71), and Robyn (#87). Several girl groups also made the list, including the Salt n Pepa (#37), En Vogue (#52), Destiny’s Child (#59), and the Pussycat Dolls (#100).

For a complete listing of VH1’s 100 Greatest Women in Music, check out their website here, and tune in tonight at 10 for the top 20.

Madonna’s “Gimme All Your Luvin” becomes her 38th Top Ten Single

There’s been some hot action from the ladies on this week’s Billboard charts. Madonna’s new single, which she performed at the Super Bowl, has hit the #10 spot on the magazine’s Hot 100 charts this week. The achievement extends to 38 the number of times Madge has had a top ten song, the most in history, besting the Beatles by four and Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder by ten. Go Madge!

Whitney Love

It’s not too big of a surprise that there’s been a surge in interest in Whitney Houston’s music since her death last Saturday, but three of her best loved songs all made it back to the Hot 100 more than twenty years after they first hit big. The song, “I Will Always Love You,” the theme song to the 1992 film, “The Bodyguard,” climbed all the way back into the top ten at #7. Her 1987 dance hit, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” reached #35, and “Greatest Love of All” hit #41. I’m sure that Whitney is somewhere smiling down...

Also on the Hot 100 this week, Kelly Clarkson holds steady at #1 with “Stronger,” Adele at #2 with “Fire to the Rain,” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love” remains in the Top Ten at #6. Way to go ladies! Here's Whitney:

Spice Girls' Mel C Quashes Rumors of 2012 Reunion

I've got some sad news for Spice Girls fans hoping for a 2012 reunion: it's not going to happen! About a month ago, it was reported here that the very popular British girl group might be making a comeback of sorts, starting with the Opening Ceremonies at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London (Will the Spice Girls Spice Up Your Life Again in 2012?). Reports had since surfaced that the girls might also be making an appearance at the Queen's Jubilee, a concert to mark her 60 years on the throne) in June. Well, Sporty Spice, AKA Mel C, has finally stated once and for all that the reunion is not going to happen.

Mel made a recent appearance on morning talk show, Lorraine, and quashed the tempting rumors. "...the concert (the Queen's Jubilee) looks like it's going to be out of this world, but unfortunately - bad news for any Spice Girls fans - we don't plan to perform or reform. So I'm sorry to disappoint anybody." The singer went on to say that discussions did occur, but apparently not everyone was in agreement over the reunion and so it won't be happening.

Ah well, it was a nice dream while it lasted, no? I'm sure that the rumor mongering about this reunion will linger probably right up until both events happen. Such is the basis of the gossip mills, but at least we still have their music to enjoy and Spice Girl fans everywhere can keep dreaming of a day when Posh, Sporty, Scary, Baby and Ginger might one day perform together again. That would be nice!

Song of the Day - I'm Coming Out - Diana Ross

We begin the weekend with an oldie, but goodie from a legendary diva who's near and dear to my heart. Diana Ross recorded "I'm Coming Out" for her 1980 album "diana," and little did she know at the time just how far in scope the song would reach. Not only was the song a crossover success in the summer of 1980, but it has remained a staple in oldies rotations throughout radio for its easily recognizable melody, coupled of course with the very catchy, very singable chorus.

The song has been famously sampled by Notorious B.I.G. for his hit "Mo Money, Mo Problems," and a host of others have performed it, as well, over the years. In addition to its' success on mainstream radio, "I'm Coming Out" also became an anthem for gays everywhere for its' obvious relativity to the term "coming out of the closet."

There is cause for celebration today within the gay community, as the state of New Jersey today came one step closer to legalizing same sex marriage. Yesterday the State Assembly approved the bill, following the Senate's passage on Monday. Should Governor Christie sign on, the state will become the 8th to legalize gay marriage, following the recent passage of a similar measure in Washington State. It is expected, though, that the governor will veto the bill, unfortunately prolonging the fight.

Nevertheless, gay marriage is slowly working its' way into the norm, and that is cause to celebrate. So to the gay people of New Jersey, I wish you luck. As for the rest of you, have a great weekend and enjoy Ms. Diana Ross:

I want the world to know
Got to let it show

Song of the Day - Gossip Folks - Missy Elliott

I heard she eat one cracker a day...

Somebody commented on Facebook the other day after the Grammy's that they wished Missy Elliott would come back and show Nicki Minaj how it's done. Hell yeah! Now I like Nicki, but I don't love her, especially after that strange performance at the show. No, Missy is the still the queen and I think we need her back real soon!
