Bruno Mars Holds His Own at Super Bowl Halftime Show

Unlike most of America, I stayed away from the Super Bowl entirely yesterday.  I wasn't particularly excited about the teams involved, nor had I been invited to any Super Bowl parties, which is okay with me  I was, as always, though, interested in the musical entertainment presented as the Halftime Show.  This year's headliner was the very talented, but often maligned Bruno Mars, and he alone wasn't enough to make me tune in, but that doesn't mean I didn't watch his performance, and I liked it!

The Super Bowl Halftime Show has been almost as much of a spectacle as the game for some time now, and the acts headlining the show have been sometimes been hit or miss.  Big names such as Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan, Tina Turner, Mary J Blige, Aerosmith, and U2 pleased all, while others such as The Who, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and others left our mouths agape at one of the most watched musical performances of the year.

One of the most famous Halftime Shows happened ten years ago, when Nipplegate singlehandedly ruined Janet Jackson's career.  And then there was Madonna's epic performance two years ago, followed by BeyoncĂ©'s show last year.  This year was Bruno Mars, not as big a name as these two, but a definite force in today's music industry.

I watched Mars' performance on YouTube this morning and I was pretty impressed.  From the get go, his set was high energy, beginning with the very dramatic and up tempo Locked Out of Heaven before breaking into Treasure.  The Motownish revue continued for a spell until Bruno was joined onstage by none other than the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who jammed with Mars on Give It Away.  The mix was curious, but interesting, and it worked, too.  Afterwards, the classically beautiful and big finale, Just the Way You Are was dedicated to loved ones from troops overseas.  It was a nice ending to a nice show....not too much sass and showiness like in the past two years, but entertaining to the hilt.  Go Bruno!

Song of the Day - You Want This - Janet Jackson

soulbounce

Here's a classic from Janet Jackson's stellar 1993 eponymous album.  The up tempo tune masterfully samples the Supremes' Love Child and Kool and the Gang's Jungle Boogie and is pure joy through and through!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Scream - Michael Jackson/Janet Jackson

Happy Friday to all.  Here's a Flashback Friday song that continues on my theme from yesterday's Song of the Day.  Only one more week of "what now's" and "screams" for me and then I can finally relax a little...I hope!

"janet's" 20th Anniversary Song of the Day - Whoops Now

byron4music

At first listen, the average person may have missed this gem that appears after a period of silence at the end of what's listed as the final track on janet.  On the album, Whoops Now begins as a little banter between Janet and her pals and turns into a most sunshiney tune to finish off the album. The background music reminds me of something you'd hear on a "Sesame Street" skit and the vocals are totally silly and nothing but fun. What a great way to finish a great album!

And the video is one which I've never seen before.  It actually looks like a home shot video, and although it's a little fuzzy, there are some great shots of Janet here...

"janet's" 20th Anniversary Song of the Day - You Want This

In the last Music News Bytes, I mentioned that Janet Jackson recently celebrated the 20th Anniversary of her monumental album janet.  The record was her third straight smash album, following the breakthrough Control and the equally delicious and hit-filled Rhythm Nation.  janet was a classic, generating nine singles, six of which charted in the top ten, and from the opening whispers of That's the Way Love Goes through playful and sometimes sexy interludes, Supremes' samples (there are at least two!), tender ballads and the final, hidden Sesame Streetish Whoops Now, this one got played out on many a CD player all the way from 1993 to 1995.

In celebration of this noteworthy occasion, I've decided to feature a few of my favorites from the janet album over the next week or so, not every day, but instead sprinkled in here and there.  If you were around back in the mid-nineties, I'm sure you'll remember some of the classic tunes from this one.  Here's one of my favorites off that album, the fast, playful, and funky You Want This:

Gaga Track may not make the final cut of Cher's new album

Yes, apparently Cher's new album is all finished being recorded, and the finishing touches and final decisions have yet to be made.  The legendary singer was interviewed on 20/20 Saturday night and during the discussion, she revealed that the song she recorded with Lady Gaga, The Greatest Thing, may not make it to the final version of the album.  The blog propagaga quoted the diva as saying "There is a track with Lady Gaga, but it's very on the line right now...she may not want to be on the album.

So what does that mean?  I guess we'll have to stay tuned to this one to find out more.  In the meantime the album, which was originally slated to be released last March, isn't due out now until September.

Miss Janet Conceptualizing New Album

Janet Jackson hasn't released a new studio album in a long, long time, and she told Billboard recently that her and her team are "creating the concept and initial thoughts on the music" and that she's "excited about the direction that we’re taking.”  This is good news indeed!

Miss Janet recently celebrated the 20 year anniversary of her dynamite fifth album, janet on May 18th.  Look for a special tribute to that great one in the upcoming days...

Black History Month Song of the Day - Together Again - Janet Jackson

Today is the last day of February, thankfully, and spring is well on its way.  What better way to celebrate the oncoming of the nicer weather with a shiny happy song by a black artist who's made huge contributions to the American songbook for a long, long time now.  This is a very special song with a very special meaning, so click play, enjoy, and then go out and have a great day!

Song of the Day - Feedback - Janet Jackson

Whatever happened to Miss Janet? I wanted to do a little bit of a throwback today and for some reason she popped in my head, so here we are. This is the last great song from the former superstar who seems to have faded from view. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did...

Ooh I miss her!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Jungle Love - The Time

Today's song is taken from Prince's 1984 semi-autobiographical, cult classic film, Purple Rain. In the movie, Morris Day, the lead singer of The Time, was our star's biggest nemesis, duking it with him out for both club bragging rights and the girl. Two of The Time's songs were featured in the film, The Bird and this track, and both songs hit the Top 40 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

The Time is one of the most successful acts of the early to mid-eighties recording artists to come out of the Prince spawned "Minneapolis Sound," which included artists such as Sheila E., Vanity 6, Appolonia 6, and Tevin Campbell, among others.  Though their time was short-lived, The Time was very cool in their heyday, and they even reunited for a performance of this song with Rihanna at the 50th Edition of the Grammy Awards in 2008, and have since played together under a different pseudonym, Original 7even, as recently as 2011.

In the interim, band members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis took the Minneapolis Sound to another level as producers, creating huge hits with the likes of Janet Jackson, New Edition, The S.O.S. Band and many others.

So check out Jungle Love, by The Time, this Friday's Flashback Song of the Day:

I Love the 90's Song of the Day - Love Will Never Do (Without You) - Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is another one of those artists who flourished in the 1990's, and this one was one of my favorites from her 1989 Rhythm Nation 1814 album.  Love Will Never Do became Janet's 7th Top Five single off the album and her 5th #1 song.  The Herb Ritts-directed video was shot in black and white, and featured then Calvin Klein underwear models Antonio Sabato, Jr. and Djimon Hounsou.  Miss Janet wore a black tank and a pair of jeans and was as stunning a woman as the men were beautiful.  Check it out:

Music News: VH1's Greatest Women; Madonna's 38th Top Ten; Whitney Love

All this week, the music channel VH1 has been counting down its’ list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music, and the big winner is…you guessed it, Madonna! The five-hour miniseries is the latest in the popular Greatest countdowns aired on the network, and this one concludes tonight, Friday, February 17th at 10PM. This particular list only takes into account the past 20 years, during which time Madge has been at her most popular.

Here’s a list of the top ten greatest women, according to VH1:

#10 – P!nk
#9 – Mary J. Blige
#8 – Christina Aguilera
#7 – Janet Jackson
#6 – Whitney Houston
#5 – Adele
#4 – Lady Gaga
#3 – Beyonce
#2 – Mariah Carey
#1 – Madonna

The list is pretty good, but not perfect in my eyes. I have no idea what VH1’s criteria was for choosing these ladies in this particular order, but if you’re going by the last 20 years, then I’d say there would be many on the list who’d be further atop the list than newer artists like Adele or Lady Gaga. Hmmm, I may just have to come up with my own list…

Other great ladies found on my iPod who made the list include Britney Spears (#11), Alannis Morissette (#15), Katy Perry (#17), Missy Elliott (#18), Kelly Clarkson (#19), Rihanna (#20), Sade (#30), Cher (#31), Shakira (#36), Nicki Minaj (#40), Kylie Minogue (#47), Nelly Furtado (#51), Macy Gray (#70), Natalie Merchant (#71), and Robyn (#87). Several girl groups also made the list, including the Salt n Pepa (#37), En Vogue (#52), Destiny’s Child (#59), and the Pussycat Dolls (#100).

For a complete listing of VH1’s 100 Greatest Women in Music, check out their website here, and tune in tonight at 10 for the top 20.

Madonna’s “Gimme All Your Luvin” becomes her 38th Top Ten Single

There’s been some hot action from the ladies on this week’s Billboard charts. Madonna’s new single, which she performed at the Super Bowl, has hit the #10 spot on the magazine’s Hot 100 charts this week. The achievement extends to 38 the number of times Madge has had a top ten song, the most in history, besting the Beatles by four and Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder by ten. Go Madge!

Whitney Love

It’s not too big of a surprise that there’s been a surge in interest in Whitney Houston’s music since her death last Saturday, but three of her best loved songs all made it back to the Hot 100 more than twenty years after they first hit big. The song, “I Will Always Love You,” the theme song to the 1992 film, “The Bodyguard,” climbed all the way back into the top ten at #7. Her 1987 dance hit, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” reached #35, and “Greatest Love of All” hit #41. I’m sure that Whitney is somewhere smiling down...

Also on the Hot 100 this week, Kelly Clarkson holds steady at #1 with “Stronger,” Adele at #2 with “Fire to the Rain,” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love” remains in the Top Ten at #6. Way to go ladies! Here's Whitney:

Song of the Day - Free Xone - Janet Jackson

He was on a airplane
Sittin next to this guy
Said he wasn't too shy
And he seemed real nice
Until he found out he was gay
That's so not mellow

Since I spoke of Janet Jackson yesterday, I thought I'd throw one of her songs on here for today's song. This one's from her 1997 album, "The Velvet Rope," and it's vintage, fast n funky Janet at her best.

Let's get free. . .

"Free Xone" was never released as a single, but it's definitely one of my favorite songs on "The Velvet Rope," one of Janet's last great albums. The themes are much like the themes of many of brother Michael's songs, with a message of love and harmony. One of the cool things about this, and the singer herself, is that she's for all kinds of love, between a man and a woman, a man and a man, and a woman and a woman, and that's how it should be.

Xone 1
Boy meets boy
Boy loses boy
Boy gets cute boy back

Girl meets girl
Girl loses girl
Girl gets cute girl back

One rule
No rules
One love
Freexone

This video is fan made and pretty darned good! It clearly uses clips from the "Got Till It's Gone" and "Runaway" videos and there's none of that annoying mouth-moving-but-not-to-the-song images that you see in many of these kinds of videos. The dance sequences from the clips used to make up this one almost look like they were done to the song, too.

Boy meets girl
Boy loses girl
Boy gets cute girl back

Girl meets boy
Girl loses boy
Girl gets cute girl back

Freexone
Let's get free. . .
Free to be who you really are
One rule
No rules
One love

Enjoy and happy Sunday! Oh, and remember:

Love your sister
Love your brother
Love yourself

Remember
One rule
No rules
One love

Fingers and Birds, Nipples and Careers: WTF?

It's a snowy Saturday morning and I feel a rant coming on...

Fingers and birds

It all started on Thursday when I read this headline on Yahoo:

M.I.A. could be in breach of contract for lewd act during Super Bowl halftime show
During the "Gimme All Your Luvin" segment of Madonna's Super Bowl Halftime performance last Sunday, rapper M.I.A. flipped the proverbial bird, and this Yahoo news item was the first I'd seen or heard of the incident, even though I'd watched the performance a few times on my DVR. The crux of the article, of course, was speculation whether or not the NFL would fine M.I.A. for her 'crude move,' especially given the fact that the show was seen by 111 million viewers (a record!). To this question, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello would not comment.

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest yesterday, Madonna said she had no idea M.I.A. was going to do such a thing, and she didn't learn of it until after the show. '"I wasn't happy about it," Madonna told Ryan Seacrest. "I understand it's kind of punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity, it seemed negative."' Is this the same Madonna I've known and loved for like ever?

Well, the answer to that question is both yes and no. Madonna herself has been no stranger to controversy during her 30 some- odd years in the public eye. From the racy photos of her "Sex" book to dancing amongst burning crosses and writhing on a stage floor in a wedding dress, Madge has had her own fair share of public faux pais. M.I.A. flips the very same bird in the video for "Gimme," during Nicki Minaj's sequence, and so if she could do it there, why is it so shocking that she did it at the Super Bowl?

Of course, Madonna had to publicly state that she was disappointed by the finger incident. After all this is America, where we are so tightly wound as a society that the most common of gestures become suddenly appalling when done in places where our kids can see them. Or maybe it's just where kids can see them in the company of adults? After all, no one complained about the very same bird in the video.

Nipples and Careers

Of course this Super Bowl thing has its roots in the same big show from 2004, when then-still-popular Janet Jackson's nipple became exposed in an incident that notoriously coined the phrase "wardrobe malfunction." The backlash that came after that one was huge, costing television stations millions in fines and ultimately decimating Jackson’s career from the bona fide superstar she was at the time to the unfortunate 'has-been' status she holds today.

Since that nipple incident, Jackson has had one, count em, one, top twenty single ("Feedback," which hit #19 in 2007). She had a total of 25 such songs before then, ten of which hit #1. You could argue with me all you want, but I have always been a big Janet fan and I can say without trepidation that she is no longer the star she once was and I point to that "wardrobe malfunction" as the culprit.

WTF?

I think that the Yahoo article about M.I.A.'s Super Bowl bird is unnecessarily stirring the pot, shining a spotlight on something that many people probably didn't even notice. I never saw it until I read the article and watched the accompanying video. By trumpeting it out there, they're making a bigger deal out of it than it should be. So far, the NFL hasn’t taken any action, and I hope they don't. It will only cause more people to see it and to talk about it, adding yet another ugly chapter to our hypocritically Puritan-like society.

If you ask me, American society is way too uptight. We like to think that kids don't know about things such as nipples, dirty words and gestures, but they know a lot more than we give them credit for, and the reason they know such things is because we make them 'dirty' by trying to shield kids from them. By making such a big stink out of such things, adults are telling children that they are taboo, thus causing an automatic interest in them.

If we don't make it a big deal, then it's not

When I was in Italy a few years ago, I saw television commercials on public stations that showed bare-chested women, and you know what, I'll bet that kids over there don't think it's such a big deal when they see it. If it's on the boob tube (pardon the pun), then their society must not think it's so taboo and so it's not for the children. Here, when we trumpet the 'evil' in such images and ideas, our children sense it as a no-no, and so they seek out ways to exploit them.

So maybe M.I.A. did perform an 'obscene' gesture at the Super Bowl. How is that any different than what we see in everyday life? How many times a day do you see a bird or hear a cuss word? I missed the bird at the Super Bowl, and I'm sure many others did, as well. By making a big thing of it, you're causing an adverse effect on the public than what your intentions were. Madonna, I think, had to say what she said about the incident. She's smart enough that she has to go along with societal norms the way they are or suffer a blow to her fame, and her wallet.

This commentary in no way endorses public displays of the things we generally consider as obscene. Giving the one-fingered salute, swearing, and showing off body parts in such an open way is classless, but in a society that claims to be so free, we need to not make such a big deal about it, for it will invariably have the opposite effect than what we want it to have. Period.

Janet Jackson Week Song of the Day - Got 'til It's Gone, featuring Joni Mitchell & Q-Tip

For our last Janet Week Song of the Day, I chose "Got 'til It's Gone." This was the lead single off of her "Velvet Rope" album and I love it cause it's sultry, smooth and sexy all at the same time. It's perfect for getting a groove on...kind of in the same vein as "That's the Way Love Goes," only different. Oh, and can't forget Joni Mitchell, whose music inspired this one and is sampled in it. Props! Oh, and Janet's hair, lol, that funky hairdo...

Janet Jackson Week Song of the Day - Runaway

Today's Janet song was especially recorded for her first Greatest Hits album, "Design of a Decade," and it's a pleasant, melodic, and relaxing kind of songs. The tune peaked at #3 in 1995 and the video for it got a lot of airplay on what was then still Music Television, or MTV. The vid shows Janet taking a Tinkerbell-like trip around the world and she looks especially beautiful in it, with a cool piece of jewelry connecting from her nose to her ear. Very exotic! Janet Jackson Week Song of the Day - Miss You Much

Today's Janet Jackson song is a pure dance track from her "Rhythm Nation 1814" CD, which came out in 1989. The album was the follow-up to hugely successful breakthrough album "Control," and this was the first of four #1 songs to come off of that album (followed by "Escapade," "Black Cat," and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)"), which had a staggering seven songs to hit the top five.

The video, like several from songs off of the album, was shot in black and white and featured the kind of dance sequences made popular by Janet's elder brother, Michael. So check out the video for today's Janet "Song of the Day," "Miss You Much":

Janet Jackson Week Song of the Day - Nasty Boys

This was one of my favorites from Janet's breakthrough 1986 album, "Control." She was just a young thing back then (weren't we all?), and although she'd made albums before it, she never really hit the big time until this one. The album contained some great and memorable songs, such as "What Have You Done For Me Lately," "When I Think of You," "The Pleasure Principle," the title track, and lots more. The songs were all done in the vein of the Prince-inspired "Minneapolis Sound" that was so hot during the mid to late eighties.

For those of you who may not know, check out then choreographer and former American Idol judge Paula Abdul in the video as one of Janet's buds. Weird, huh?

July 20, 2011 - A Ziggy Kind of Day

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! Summer is in full swing (and so are the high temperatures!) and I have yet to make it to the beach! I’ve had a frustrating couple of days since the weekend and hopefully I’ll put an end to it with this post and starting a brand new day…

Ziggy

Every once in awhile I like to refer to myself as the real-life Ziggy. You remember Ziggy, the sad, yet lovable cartoon character who’s constantly finding himself in unfortunate situations in his daily life…kind of like a born loser. Well for the past couple of days I’ve definitely had some Ziggy moments, where no matter what I decided to do, it was the wrong thing, and it seemed that nothing went my way.

iPhone Blues

It all started on Sunday when I went to Best Buy to get a new phone. My old iPhone curiously started behaving very badly during this, the last month of my contract and I’ve been wanting to get the new one. So I signed on the dotted line and walked out with my new iPhone 4. I was excited…that is, until Monday.

Sometime Monday afternoon I was playing with one of my newest apps, Cam Wow (check out an article I wrote on it here), when suddenly the phone blacked out. I thought that maybe it was the app, and I restarted it again only to have it happen several times over the next 24 hours, finally dying altogether at around 9AM yesterday. I needed to go back to Best Buy! And so my Ziggy Tuesday began…

Bad timing all the way through

My agenda yesterday was simple. I had two errands to do, or three now with the visit to Best Buy, and they had to be done in the morning. I was going to get my stuff done and then head on out to the beach in the afternoon, the time I like to go. Simple enough, right? Well, not for John on a Ziggy day.

Did you ever have one of those days where just every single little choice you make is the wrong one? Mine started when I forgot my receipt and box for the iPhone and didn’t realize it until I was about 20 miles from home. Deep breaths!

I just did what I had to do and went back home to fetch them and then go to Best Buy. By the time I did that it was noon and I was feeling a little peckish. There’s a really good pizza joint near Best Buy called Zeno’s and I figured I’d get a slice because otherwise I’d probably have to wait an hour or so before I could eat.

I popped on over to Zeno’s and grabbed a quick slice. I was in there less than ten minutes. That was the first of my timing mistakes as I walked into the cell phone area of the store seconds behind two other people who just happened to both need new phones and were both very curious shoppers. Needless to say, I stood there for almost an hour and fifteen minutes until they were both done, and to kick it off I just missed the salesperson I wanted to help me. (He was cute and he did seem to know a lot more than the other rep!)

So a mere two and a half hours later I walked out of Best Buy, at least with a new and working phone. They told me that this was the first defective iPhone they’ve ever gotten back. You see, I told ya: Ziggy!

A quick and easy trip to Staples…Not! A Ziggy day continues…

After Best Buy I had one more stop to make, and that was to pick up a new calendar/planner for the upcoming year. I always get the same one, from Staples, and it begins in July so I wanted to start using the new one right away. I had seen the one I wanted a couple of weeks ago, so all I needed to do was run in, pick it up, and be on my way. Easy, right?

Of course, in accordance with my Ziggy day, the entire store had been rearranged in the two weeks since I’d been there and I could not find the planners. I finally had to enlist the help of a rep who even had some trouble locating them in the store’s new configuration. I’d only wasted about ten minutes to that point…not too bad.

As happens on Ziggy days such as this, I always seem to pick the wrong line to get on. When I approached the register area, there was one register open, with one customer being taken care of and the other waiting behind her. I stood in back of the second customer. Within seconds, another cashier opened another register and called the woman over. I stayed where I was. As I waited, the cashier in front of me was being very chatty with his customer, a little too chatty if you ask me. He was asking her about the health of her pc, if she’d like to make a donation to charity, and explaining the benefits of a Staples Rewards card…it was a never-ending sales pitch.

In the meantime, two other people got behind the woman who’d been called over to the other register and even the two of them, who came way after me, got to leave way before me. In all, I stood there a good ten to fifteen minutes…as the next in line…before I finally moved to the other register. That second cashier didn’t even call me over. She could sense I was seething and was very quick and quiet with my transaction. It was a frustrating ending to a frustrating morning…ur day!

I got home about 3:30 PM after leaving my house at 8:30 AM. What should have taken two hours in all ended up taking seven, and of course there were a myriad of other Ziggy moments that elongated what was supposed to be my simple day. I never made it to the beach, and my next chance to go isn’t going to be until Friday, when I’m sure something else will happen. Another summer day wasted! Today I’m stuck at home because I’m finally getting my dishwasher fixed and they’re not coming until between 2 and 5 in the afternoon, so it continues. Grrrrr!!!!

So maybe you’ll see me here again sometime today. I’ve got plenty of time on my hands and hopefully I’ll be productive. In the meantime, along with the theme of this week’s Janet Jackson “Songs of the Day” and my Ziggy day, here’s a Janet and Michael Jackson video that perfectly describes my day yesterday. Enjoy!

"Janet Jackson Week" Song of the Day - Love Will Never Do

When I penned the article of Janet's top ten songs, this was my number one, and for good reason. Here's what I wrote about the song back then:

This irresistible charmer from 1991 was an unprecedented fifth Top Five single off of the previous year's "Rhythm Nation" album. Coupled with the typical Minneapolis sounds made popular by Prince, (taken to further heights by Prince alum and the album's producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis), and Janet's nasally vocals, was a memorable black and white video (produced by Herb Ritts) and featuring Antonio Sabato Jr. and Djimon Hounsou, two popular male models of the time. The video was stylistically produced and is as memorable as the song.

If any of you were around back in 1991, there's no way you don't know (and probably love!) this song. Unfortunately, there weren't many links to the original video out there, and the best one I did find is a little grainy. Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
