Check out this record-breaking roller coaster...Formula Rossa

I am still working on my next installment of Roller Coaster Trip, but in the meantime I found a coaster on TV that I had never heard of, although it is the fastest in the world.  The coaster is called Formula Rossa and it's located at a place called Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

This one looks fierce!  The track is more than a mile long and it navigates through hills, twists and turns at very high speeds, which is where it breaks records.  This coaster's hills aren't the highest in the world, by any means, but this thing literally flies at a mere 145 mph!  The thing causes G-forces of about 4.8, which is just shy of what a person can literally handle.  All I can say is WOW! Maybe someday...

Watch how it pauses and scares the hell out of riders in anticipation of what's to come:

A Fun Return to Splash

Last night I returned to Splash for the first time in a long time.  It's funny, but in summers past I'd have been there at least ten times by now.  I guess my own clubbing habits were affected by the waning of the legendary club.  But with the announcement of its closing, I just had to get there at least a couple more times.  Though I had said I'd be going on Friday night, I never did make it, but I did last night, and it was just like old times.

I got there around 11 PM, and there was a line.  There had never been much of a line the past few times I'd gone there, so I'm guessing that many others are returning for old times sake.  The crowd inside was buzzing, and DJ Steve Sidewalk had the crowd up and dancing all night.  I always liked it when Steven played...he used to be a staple at Campus Thursdays when I would go every week.
Anyway, I danced and danced, alone and with others around me, having a good time until my shirt was soaked with sweat and it was time for me to go.  I left kind of early for me...around 2 AM, but I knew I'd be back there at least one last time anyway (mental note: bring extra shirt next time!).  I've had a lot of good times and met a lot of cool people in that place and I'm going to miss it.

Oh, and by the way, Mr. Sidewalk finally let the cat outta the bag last night, too.  Dougie Meyer, longtime Splash promoter, recently announced that the entire staff of Splash would be moving to a new location immediately after its August 10th closing.  After a few Dougie hints on his Facebook page, I can now say for sure that the "new location" will be XL.  Stay tuned...

Song of the Day - Next to Me - Emeli Sandé

You won’t find him tryna chase the devil
For money, fame, for power, out of greed
You won’t ever find him where the rest go
You will find him, you’ll find him next to me

Today, my friend Dan is being laid to rest somewhere in Indiana, and if I were anywhere nearby, I'd be there for sure.  Dan was a very special person, and he's had me wondering why God seems to take the good ones so young, a question that can only be answered as "because he's got more use for them with him."  Dan was certainly a good one.  All you have to do is take a look at his Facebook page to see just how many people, far and wide, were as affected as I by Dan's loss. Rest in peace my brother...till we meet again!

A Song for Dan - Rest in Peace

It is with a profoundly heavy heart that I write this post this morning. Last night I received some news that is very upsetting.  Another member of my writing family has passed suddenly and tragically too young.  Dan Reveal was one of the kindest and gentlest souls I ever met, and even though I've never met him face to face, I considered him a friend and I am absolutely saddened by his loss.

Dan is the third such person from my writing circle to have passed since I began writing six years ago, and like with any other family, his loss creates a void in my life.  Almost a full four years ago, another good writer friend of mine, Betty Malone passed suddenly and that was the first time I felt such a loss at the passing of someone I only knew through cyberspace.  Then came Dena Bolton two years ago and now Dan.  Sigh!  They were all good people and all way too young to leave us.

Dan Reveal was above all, to me and many of my fellow writers, a poet.  He had a special gift with words, and his poems reflected the thoughtful, loving and kind person that he truly was.  He and I first came under one another's radar through the comment section of our pieces on the old Associated Content, and we soon started corresponding privately there until becoming friends on Facebook, where we interacted every now and again.

Hello John...gotta tell you.. I had a dream about you last night..  I was driving in my car and you were sitting in a lawn chair drinking a Pina Colada..lol!! I wanted to talk to you, but I woke up too soon...hahaha! Just wanted to tell you!! Have a nice day!

Hey Amigo!!
How are you? Long time no hear.. Just want to extend best wishes to you always!! Remember, you're a special friend to us all!! I very much respect the work you do as a teacher--also, for sharing your feelings as a human being! We all benefit!!
Take care,
Dan

Greetings, my friend!!! How are you? Just a note of appreciation. I'm happy I know you! Thanks always for your nice comments on those poems/music.
I realize that you're a super human being! Thanks for being you and please never change!!!
Your friend,
Dan

These are just snippets of some of the messages I've received from Dan over the years.  I think that by reading them, you can see what kind of person he was.  In addition to his gift for writing and his treasured friendship, I only recently got to witness Dan's greatest talent, that for music.  I always knew he had that gift, as well, but in the past few months, he started posting some of his songs, and I was literally floored by his voice, and once again, his words.

As word began to spread over his death, it became clearly evident that I was not the only one in cyberspace who's lives he touched.  Many of us share in the same heartbreak at his loss, and his Facebook page continues to fill up with thoughts and prayers for this special person.  It is still amazing to me how in many ways the invention of the Internet has great benefits, especially when it allows you to know people you might not otherwise have gotten to know.  I consider myself lucky to have known Dan Reveal the way that I did.

I am lucky too, to have met many wonderful people through writing and Facebook, wonderful, kind people like Dan, people like Bridgitte, Anna, Lady Samantha, Sherri, Janet, Donald, Nancy, Charlotte, Lyn, Jenny, Crystal, Rachel, Shelly, Theresa, Jolie, Bethany and many, many more. Like Dan, I treasure each and every one of you and I'm glad to know you all.  You are a part of my family!

It's funny, but I had often thought that maybe Dan and I would get to meet each other face to face one day, only now it won't be in his native Indiana.  So this is for you my friend!  I know that you loved Elton John and I find it appropriate that this song is named for you.  Daniel you're a star! Rest in peace my friend!

Please check out Dan's Yahoo Contributor Page and see some of what made him so special.

Song of the Day - Indestructible - Robyn

Yesterday a friend of mine asked me if I could help him figure out a song.  It turned out to be Robyn's Dancing On My Own. I spent the next hour or so digging into the past and listening to her whole Body Talk set, reliving some memories and enjoying the great, great music that's there, including this one.

Indestructible is one of the best songs on the album(s).  There are two versions of it in the series.  The first one is purely classical, and by classical I mean classical music, with strings providing the music to the lyrics, and the remix version here is found on one of the later editions of the three-album set.  Both versions are great. so check it out...

Frat House in P-Town Right Around the Corner

I haven't spoken about this on here before, but in just a couple of weeks I am going on a big trip.  I say "big trip" not because I'm going very far or because I'm spending so much time away from home, but it'll be a trip unlike anyone I've ever taken before.  You see, I'll be spending an entire week in Provincetown, Massachusetts in a house I'll be renting with six other guys.

It all starts with bowling, my new-found gay social life. The guys at bowling had been planning this from when I practically just joined the league and I was asked in on the trip probably somewhere in October.  "Sure, I've never been to P-Town," I said to my buddy Tim.  "Oh, that's gonna be fun!"

Oh my, how time flies!  Two weeks from tomorrow I'll be hitting the road again, only this time I'll be headed northward towards seven days of drinking and partying and drinking some more...and all in one of the biggest gay worlds around.  I almost feel like I'm going to be on the Gay Real World, Provincetown!

Wikimedia Commons

The true story of seven strangers picked together to live in a house...

Well, we are kind of strangers.  I mean, well they've all known each other longer than I've known them, and they're all really nice guys, but it should be very interesting to see how it goes because we're all going to know each other a lot better after this week.  I've socialized with these guys here and there, but I really have no idea what to expect, but I am sure it will be fun.

I bring this all up now because last night we had our very first house meeting, to discuss some of the logistics of going up there.  You know, food, booze, coolers, and whatnot.  It was during the meeting that it hit me just how close it is.  After having it be so far on the horizon for so long, I never really thought about what it's going to be like.

"You better be blogging about it....I want blow by blows of all the action," my pal Dit tells me.

Apparently one of the things I wasn't aware of until our meeting was that each house (there are other people going, too, staying in other residences) has to host everyone one of the nights during the week.  That's cool, but the house party must have a theme.  Since we're the largest group of people in a place, we've been nicknamed the "Frat House," and so we were kicking around a party to go with that theme (hint, hint).

So be on the lookout for my Song of the Day tomorrow...it'll be dedicated to the boys of our Frat, lol.  In the meantime, I am heading to Splash in the city tonight.  They announced the other day that after 22 years of being one of the world's most famous gay clubs, they will be closing forever. So sad!  The end of an era!  You can check out my article on that here if you like.

Until tomorrow....

Roller Coaster Trip, Part I: Busch Gardens' Verbolten

I promised yesterday that I would be sharing some roller coaster stories from my recent trip to Virginia and I've just published my first two.  The first was one I hadn't done on my Examiner Adventure Parks page and it's an overview of all the great coasters at King's Dominion in Doswell, Virginia.   Here's the link for that and another one for Busch Gardens.  I tell ya, these are two great parks...KD's got a lot of them, a lot more than Busch Gardens, but the Old Country's coasters are all awesome!

The second piece I posted is the first in what I hope to be a new series of articles attempting to give readers a first-hand experience of what it's like to ride some of my favorite coasters.  The first one is on Busch Gardens' Verbolten, which opened last year as a replacement to an old favorite, Big Bad Wolf.  I was very skeptical about this one when I first heard about it.  Ii remember it being described as a "family-type coaster," which it is definitely not!

Verbolten makes great use of that great, great
last swooping drop as its predecessor:

Verbolten is an awesome ride, and rather than describe it again here, just check out the link in the preceding paragraph to read all about it.  In the meantime, take a ride on it below:

And for old times' sake, here's a ride on the good ole Big Bad Wolf:

Stay tuned for more tales of coasters coming soon!

Song of the Day - Hot N Cold - Katy Perry

I woke up with this song in my head, and so... Where has Miss Katy been anyway? I hope she's in the studio working on something new for us.  Anyway, Happy Thursday!

A Weekend of Memories at Flo and Francois'

Today was my first day back from a short vacation, a road trip to Virginia to ride roller coasters, but it turned out to be somewhat of a trip down memory lane, taken vicariously through my buddy's parents.  I went with one of my two BFF's, Rich, a fellow coaster enthusiast, to King's Dominion and Busch Gardens, with a side to trip to see his parents in Virginia Beach.

chocolates on my pillow left by Flo

The roller coasters were great!  I'm sure I'll be banging out a few articles in the next few days about those, but the topic of this particular post is our time with Francois and Flossie, Rich's parents. Now like anyone else, Rich is very 'eh' about his parents.  I know that he appreciates them, but he's had a lifetime around them so...

As for me, I've always liked Francois and Flossie, otherwise known as Frank and Flo (Florence). They come up to Long Island every summer to visit Rich (and a host of other people!), and I've gotten to know them well during their visits these past few years.  Frank and Flo are in their 80's and have been married for 60 years.  They are truly the nicest people, he with a wit that'll have you cracking up hours after the one-liner's been delivered and she, well, she's just that kind of woman who's so loving and nurturing you just can't help but love her back.

We got to their house late Friday night, after a day at Busch Gardens.  We didn't leave the park until almost eleven, and it was more than an hour drive to their house.  We wouldn't get there until at least midnight.  "Are they gonna be sleeping?' I asked.

"Oh, they'll be up!  At least Flo will."  Apparently, this is what she does...

Sure enough, we got there at around 12:15 and there was Flo, watching television in what they call their 'chit-chat room.'  We were greeted with big hugs and a smile before Flo offered up some...food. "Are you hungry?  I made potato and macaroni salad," she shared.  Sure enough, within just a few minutes of arriving, Rich and I were eating the two salads at Flo's kitchen table.

The next morning, I awoke to the smell of bacon permeating the condo, and got to see Francois for the first time, sitting at the table reading the paper as Flossie cooked up a big breakfast.

"You want juice?...What kind of juice do you like?"

"I bought a melon.  Want to help me cut it up?"

"How do you want your eggs?"

Oh, within the first 8 hours of being there I couldn't help but think of my nana.  It was like she had been reincarnated.  Back when I had first gone to college in 1982 I moved in with my grandparents for a little over a year and that's how it was all the time.  My nana was a great cook and happiness to her was being able to give whatever she made to satisfy those in her stead.

Ha ha, I always remember her handing me a big dish of whatever and saying, as if to acknowledge that she already gave me too much, "eat what you can!"  Nana's cooking was always made with love, and whether or not you were too full to eat another bite, sometimes you did just because of that.  This is how it was with Flo.

All weekend long, we ate.  We feasted on cherries and cold cut sandwiches, a hearty breakfast every morning, and of course, plenty of potato and macaroni salad.  And all the way through, we laughed at Frank's one-liners and listened to Flo's stories and answered her thoughtful questions. It was nice! I really felt at home and got to think of my nana all weekend long!  I still miss you Nana! And a very special thank you to Francois and Flossie for making me feel so!

Song of the Day - Good Time - Owl City, featuring Carly Rae Jepson

It's always a good time!

Yes, it's always a good time when I'm with my pal Dita, especially when we're riding coasters.  We just got back from a five-day trip down to Virginia where we rode some of the best, and had not just a good time, but a great one!  Enjoy!

Song of the Day - Love Rollercoaster - Ohio Players

Roller coastaaaahhhh
Of Love
Say what?

This is Intimidator 305...pretty intimidating-looking, huh?  It's the resident hyper-coaster at Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia and I'll be riding it tomorrow, along with the park's other rides in a stellar line-up of coasters.  Following that will be Busch Gardens, Williamsburg on Friday and Virginia Beach for the weekend.  Sounds like fun, right?  I hope so, even though I am sure the weather's going to be even hotter down there. Anyway, I'm off.  Be back here next Tuesday!

Off into the Virginia sunset...for a few days!

Boy am I tired!  Too tired to write, really, but it is summer and now is the time to be writing, right? Anyway, it's a really long story, but in a nutshell, my bathroom is currently being remodeled.  It's something I've been saving for since October and waiting to happen since April to get done.  As (my) luck would have it, my contractor started work two weeks ago today, during my first week of summer vacation.  It has been hot and humid, and I still haven't had a shower at home since. Needless to say I'm not in a terribly great mood.

Oh, it's coming along, though.  The project should be done in a couple of days, which is perfect because I am leaving for a five day trip to Virginia tomorrow night.  That means that my bathroom, after nine months, will be completely new and beautiful and I'll have to wait till I get back to enjoy it.  Ah well, right?

Enough about the bathroom.  I'm really writing because I am going to be going on vacation from tomorrow night through until Monday, and so for the first time in a long time, there will be no postings from me here, with the exception of tomorrow's Song of the Day post...no other Songs of the Day, no music news, no me, no nothing.  I will be back on here Next Tuesday, July 23rd, so try not to miss me too much, lol.  Here's a little hint of some of what I'll be doing...

Song of the Day - Mirrors - Justin Timberlake

Here's one of Justin's most recent hits as we begin a new work week.  The song is one of my favorites off The 20/20 Experience. It's very sweet.  Oh, and by the way, Justin will be storming Yankee Stadium later this week for two shows with Mr. Jay-Z.  Should be a slammin' show!

R.I.P. Cory Monteith

I woke up this morning, like many of you, to find out that that actor Cory Monteith was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Cory, 31, played jock turned Glee star Finn Hudson on the popular series Glee.  Though it's much too early to tell what happened, suspicions are that it may have had something to do with drugs, as Monteith had been in rehab as recently as April for an undisclosed addiction.

Cory's death is yet another reminder that no one is invincible and that means at any age.  So enjoy each moment, but try not to live life too dangerously, especially if you are young, because this is what can happen to you when you do.  Rest in Peace Cory!

Song of the Day - Girl Gone Wild - Madonna

Oh, my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee
And I detest all my sins
Because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell.
But most of all because I love Thee,
And I want so badly to be good.

I went to Fire Island last night and danced my ass off.  Deejay Stacy played one of the best sets I've ever experienced and I must've burned off thousands of calories jamming to her beats, which included this one.  L U V Madonna!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Milkshake - Kelis

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard
And they're like
It's better than yours
Damn right, it's better than yours
I can teach you,
But I have to charge

Ooh yeah, Kelis' very first big single was all the rage back in 2003, and it set off a whole lotta references and innuendos.  Great tune, and still gets me singing and dancing.  Happy Friday!

Music News Bytes: Music in 2013...so far!; A Timberlake Tease; Pitbull's "International Takeover"

Music News Bytes is a collection of short news items that I follow on the Web. If you're into the same type of music I am, that is pop, dance, R&B, and such, check it out...

Billboard Mid-Year Music Awards

Well, the year 2013 is halfway over and I think it's as good a time as any to take a look at the year in music so far.  Billboard just released its own Mid-Year Music Awards, which was voted on by fans and dominated by Taylor Swift.  Here's a look at some of what the industry expert's poll found, of course with commentary by me:

Taylor Swift Rules Billboard.com's 2013 Mid-Year Music Awards

First Half MVP - Taylor Swift

I'm not sure exactly what MVP would entail, but Billboard fans voted Taylor Swift as their Most Valuable Player in music for the year so far.  I suspect that the voters who voted are pretty much the same type of people who vote in shows like Idol and such.  You guessed it, pre-teen girls.  I mean, okay, I'm not a Swift fan, so I can't really argue here, but Justin Timberlake and Beyonce finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.  Really?

Best Newcomer - Ariana Grande

With a little help from Mac Miller on her hit, The Way, teen actress turned singer Ariana Grande won in this category, further proving just who the voters are.  Can anybody repeat pre-teen girls?  Jeez!

Best Song - Just Give Me a Reason - P!nk, featuring Nate Ruess

Yeah baby, finally something I can agree with!

Other Billboard Mid-Year Music Awards went to artist I would expect to see, given the results of the major categories.  Swift, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and the rest of the usual tennie bopper crowd that are found all over pop music these days rule the roost.  For more on Billboard's list, check out their web page to see winners in other categories such as Best Video, Best Comeback, Most Memorable Feud, Most Shocking Moment, and more.

My Top Ten Songs of the Year...so far!

I've just published my own list of my picks for the ten best songs of the year so far on the Yahoo Contributor Network, and there you'll see much of what I like in music.  Many of the songs listed have been featured on my Song of the Day posts and I like my picks much better than what the Billboard readers, or voters, would have selected.  Check out The Top Ten Pop Songs of the Year, So Far.

Justin Timberlake Teases New Stuff

I mentioned in a previous Music News Bytes that Justin Timberlake would be putting out yet another album in September.  Well, Timberlake recently released a snippet of a new song from The 20/20 Experience II.  The tune, Take Back the Night, is tantilizingly good and you can check it out here.

Pitbull's Gonna Rock Your Summer!

Before I ever got to finish track reviews of Pitbull's Global Warming (I'm gonna get to it, I swear!), Mr. 305 just dropped a new album called International Takeover.  It's a compilation album of summer ready dance tracks with the likes of Trick Daddy, David Rush, Qwote, and more.  Pick it up at iTunes below, and stay tuned for track reviews of this one!

Well, that's all she wrote for this edition of Music News Bytes. Stay tuned for more on music, music, and a little bit of life as I see it on John's World.

Song of the Day - Clarity - Zedd, featuring Foxes

Here's another song I learned from ClubWill, though I did hear it before.  It's a club/dance song that's easy on the ears.  Check it out...

Song of the Day - Wake Me Up! - Avicii, featuring Aloe Blacc

Here's a song by Swedish house music producer and deejay, Avicii, who is best known his reworking of Flo Rida's hit Good Feeling into his own house music hit, Levels.  It's from his forthcoming album, TRUE.  I discovered the song through a website/blog called ClubWill, which I will mention again in the near future, but for now let's say it's a great site for learning new music.

Upon hearing this song via that web page, I immediately downloaded it, and it instantly became a favorite.  The voice of singer, Aloe Blacc, reminds me very much of Tracy Chapman, so much so that at first I thought this was a remix of an old Chapman song I didn't know.   Aside from that familiar-sounding voice, the tune's also got a bouncy, countrified feel to it, and I picture a whole slew of dancers swinging around to it, square dance style.

The lyrics to Wake Me Up are also very good, and they also remind me of something Chapman would have written.  Check them out below the video. And in the meantime, click play and enjoy this fun song!

Avicii ft Aloe Blacc Wake Me Up [HQ] from FSL Media Studios on Vimeo.

Wake Me Up

Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start
They tell me I'm too young to understand
They say I'm caught up in a dream
Life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes
Well that's fine by me

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost
[x2]

I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
I hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don't have any plans
Wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
Life's a game made for everyone
And love is the prize

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost
[x2]

I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost

Song of the Day - All American Boy - Steve Grand

It's not often that I would put up a country song here, but this one is special.  Once again, a relatively unknown recording artist, this time 23 year old country singer Steve Grand, has taken his music the independent route and hit the big time.  And what's so special about this story is that Grand is openly gay and the tune puts it all out there.

The video for the song All American Boy was released independently on YouTube just last Tuesday and already has garnered over 600K hits. The tune has a familiar ring to it for anyone
who's grown up a gay man in this world.  Our hero, a young gay man, misreads signals from another man and ends up left in the dust with that unsatisfied longing for what could have been.

The video, which cost Grand $7K of his own money to make, adds an effective visual to the story told in the song, and the result is an indie smash from a genre not known for being so open about the topic.  The song is decidedly country, but like fellow indie artist Macklemore & Lewis, I am rooting for Grand.  You go boy!

All American Boy

Ripped Jeans, only drinks whiskey

I find him by the fire while his girl was getting friskey, ohh
I say we go this road tonight

He smiles, his arms around her

but his eyes are holdin me, just a captive to his wonder, ohh
I say we go this road tonight

now I know that that’s your girl, I mean no disrespect
The way that shirt hugs you chest boy, I just won’t forget
I’ll be sittin her, drinking my whiskey
I won’t say goodnight unless I think ya might miss me, ohh

Be my All-American boy tonight
where everyday’s the 4th of July
and its alright, alright
And we can keep this up till the morning light
and you can hold me deep in your eyes
and its alright, alright
be my, be my
my All-American boy

Ripped jeans, tight shirt
he lights a cigarette you know I’m glad that she can’t stand it, ohh
I drink the moonlight from his eyes
Now hold there, just a moment

I want to take this in now we don’t need no photo of it, no
we should go this road tonight
now I know that that’s your girl, and I don’t give a damn
she’s been cusin and cryin, she don’t know what she has
so I’ll be, sittin here, tryin hold down my whiskey,
you tell your girl good night cause somebody’d like to kiss me, ohh

Be my All-American boy tonight
where everyday’s the 4th of July
and its alright, alright
And we can keep this up till the morning light
and you can hold me deep in your eyes
and its alright, alright
be my, be my
my All-American boy

Of all the girls and boys to look my way
Ain’t no body ever hit me this way
so won’t you come back with me
and lay with me a while

I’m gonna wrestle you out of them clothes,
leave that beautiful body exposed,
and you can have my heart and my soul and my body…
just be mine

Be my All-American boy tonight
baby you light my fire
its gonna be alright, alright!

Be my All-American boy tonight
where everyday’s the 4th of July
and its alright, alright
And we can keep this up till the morning light
and you can hold me deep in your eyes
and its alright, alright
be my, be my…
