It's a snow day, and I can't think of a better song title to describe this day than Madonna's Deeper and Deeper, because that's all this snow got from yesterday at noon and on. Hopefully those of you who live in this snow zone of 10 inches or more have the day off today. If not, please be safe!

Snow Days - Just a Part of Life in Winter Months
It's winter! That's it, plain and simple. Those of us who live in places that experience the most dreaded season of them all just have to take what comes and accept it. I've always said that spring is that much sweeter for those of us who experience winter, but sometimes, like today, it's hard to deal with.
Check out the map above...that's today, Tuesday, January 21st. Not only have we been having major snowfall since around noon, but the temperatures are expected to plummet to frostbite status later in the evening. School closed early today and will be closed tomorrow as well.
So, aside from terribly scary and slow-moving driving conditions (my friend Gary took six hours to get home on a normally one-hour drive!) and having to shovel the driveway multiple times, I and many others across the tri-state region are faced with being cooped up in the house for the next 24 hours or so. Ah, what to do, what to do....will I be productive? Or not? How about you?
Here are some pictures I swiped off of my Facebook feed just to show you what it's like out there...

Be safe out there, and check out a few of pieces I've penned on the subject of snow:
Song of the Day - Wild Ones - Flo Rida, with Sia
Hey I heard you were a wild one...

Haven't heard this gem in a long, long time! Where has Sia been?

A Song for Martin Luther King Day - Oh Freedom! - The Golden Gospel SIngers
Oh, freedom!
Oh, freedom!
Oh, freedom over me!
And before I'd be a slave
I'll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free

Today is Martin Luther King Day and this song, which I and many others first heard during that murderous and wild closing sequence to the 9th episode of American Horror Story: The Coven, is dedicated to his memory. The song dates back to post-Civil War years and has been famously recorded by the likes of 60's American folk singers Odetta and Joan Baez.

Just the other day I was explaining to my students, who know very little about American history, the story of slavery, the Civil War, and the civil rights struggles that plagued African-Americans for almost 100 years afterwards. It was one of those rare occasions where they were all paying attention, because their story and the significance of Dr. King's role in its end, is so compelling.
So though many of us have the day off today, please don't forget why. Not all of American history is rosy and bright, and it's important to remember these things so they can never happen again. Enjoy Freedom and enjoy your day!
Freedom
Oh, freedom!
Oh, freedom!
Oh, freedom over me!
And before I'd be a slave
I'll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
Oh, freedom!
Oh, freedom over me!
And before I'd be a slave
I'll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
No more moanin'
No more moanin’
No more moanin’ over me
And before I’d be a slave
I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
No more moanin’
No more moanin’ over me
And before I’d be a slave
I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
There'll be singin'
There’ll be singin’
There’ll be singin’ over me
And before I’d be a slave
I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
There’ll be singin’
There’ll be singin’ over me
And before I’d be a slave
I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
There'll be shoutin'
There’ll be shoutin’
There’ll be shoutin’ over me
And before I’d be a slave
I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
There’ll be shoutin’
There’ll be shoutin’ over me
And before I’d be a slave
I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
Oh, freedom!
Oh, freedom!
Oh, freedom over me!
And before I'd be a slave
I'll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
