Spring Has Sprung? Well, Yeah!

Spring has sprung!  Well....sort of.  Last night, we 'sprung ahead' with the time, meaning that the sun was out, in the sky, approaching the 7 o'clock hour this evening.  Holla!  Temps climbed all the way into the 40's today, as well...a virtual heatwave!  These two things give us winter-weary peeps even more reason to look forward to the coming spring.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I could already feel it coming, and now the signs are becoming more apparent.  This winter has been too long and too dreary and I think we all need a little lifting of the spirits, which spring will most certainly do.  Spring is my favorite season, and as far as I'm concerned, it has sprung!

Hold On...It's Coming!

Hello to my fellow peeps who've been suffering through this long, cold winter like I have.I just wanted to let you know...it's almost over!  The end of February is near and I am starting to see signs.. Oh, they're small, but they're definitely there. Yes, in the past two weeks it's been brutal, with temps often in the single digits and wind chills below zero.  The cold has put almost everyone in the doldrums and I think we've all got to start thinking...spring!  I know I am.

Even though the past two days have been some of the worst so far, the massive ice that's covered all the previous snows and our streets and our driveways is starting to melt away.  Oh, it's going slow, but I can just feel things inching steadily towards the next season and a brighter mood.  The really cold snappers are becoming a shorter duration.  Yesterday was extremely cold early, but  by 11, the temperature was already in the 20's, and if you've been feeling the singles, the 20's definitely don't feel so bad.

The sun is going down later and later, and so the longer daylight brings more time for the ice and eventually the snow to melt away and that'll even get better shortly as we're gonna 'spring ahead' in just a couple of weeks.

So hold tight friends.  It's right around the corner, and very soon you'll start seeing those daffodils and crocuses and find yourself in a better mood.  The Spring Awakening is coming!

The Winter Doldrums: I Think I'll Just Stick It Out!

This is why old folks move south...I understand now!

That was my friend Joann in a text message last week during a conversation about our respective experiences with the aftermath of...um...Juno.  (The recent and baffling naming of winter storms is a most ridiculous practice that is annoying, but that's a topic for another time!)  That was the first major snow storm of the season, and Long Island got hit the hardest with more than two feet of the white stuff in most places, including Patchogue, the town where I live.  It was windy and it was cold, and with snowdrifts, shoveling of up to practically four feet of snow was not out of the question.  I totally understood what Joann meant...

Here we are, a week later, and things have gotten worse.  Winter is in full swing, a little late, but it's here, and the south is looking better than ever!  This week's storm was a little different, as what started out as snow early Monday became a heavy, heavy rain that caused a lot of heavy slush to shovel, and then an arctic blast came in and turned everything to ice.  And it's only February 3rd!

For awhile there I had hope that we might just escape winter's worst, as snowfall events before last week were nil, but now if feels like there is so much still to come.  Snow is forecast for Thursday and then again Sunday into Monday.  Ugh!  And the roads are icy as hell!  Well, just like those Ziggy Days we all get once in awhile, we have no choice but to deal with it even though those winter doldrums can be so nagging and depressing.

So for the rest of this winter, I'm going to approach it with a positive attitude and try and make the best of it.  After all, winter can be beautiful, and I always like to say that because of winter, we here up north have a better appreciation for the beautiful weather when it does come in just a few weeks. So for those of you in the south, yeah, I am a little jealous, but how often do you get to see a sunset like this...

All we need is a warm, sunshiny day

UGH!  Another winter storm is coming!  I tell ya, I am totally sick of this crap, and I'm sure everyone around me is, too.  To now this has been one of the brutalist of winters, with no less than four or five significant snowstorms, as well as some pretty freaking cold weather, too!  And it is going to snow again...UGH!!!

Just a couple of years ago, I would be saying right now that I am in a Ziggy period, one of those times where just about everything seems to be going wrong.  I've been in a bad state of mind, for weeks now, but I'm not going to say that it's good ole Ziggy rearing his bald little head over my life.  I think it's just this constant cold and stress from the snow that's got me just wanting something, anything, to bring some sunshine back into my life.  And I am sure there are many who are feeling my pain right now.

We're now on our 2nd or 3rd layer
of snow and it's all dirty, ugly!

I haven't really written too many personal posts lately.  I've been a little sensitive about it ever since I poured my soul a little too much, I think, three years ago.  I'm still a little embarrassed about that, but those posts remain for the same reason I first put them there.  If just one person reads what I wrote, or what I write, and sees them self in that post, then maybe they'll feel better knowing they're not alone, that maybe they're not as crazy or different as they might think.  We all get a little crazy in the mind sometimes, but then sometimes we need a little reminder that we're not the only ones feeling those feelings.

Anywho, so many things have been getting to me lately I don't even want to get into them all.  Between interpersonal problems at work, loneliness exacerbated by the weather, financial woes, overworking because of it, blah, blah, blah, but everyone around me seems a lil cranky these days, too, so maybe I'm not alone.  I think maybe all we'll all need is some sunshine and warmth to make us feel better.  Oh, we're all gonna feel so good that first warm, sunshiny day!

Song of the Day - Deeper and Deeper - Madonna

It's a snow day, and I can't think of a better song title to describe this day than Madonna's Deeper and Deeper, because that's all this snow got from yesterday at noon and on.  Hopefully those of you who live in this snow zone of 10 inches or more have the day off today.  If not, please be safe!

Snow Days - Just a Part of Life in Winter Months

It's winter!  That's it, plain and simple.  Those of us who live in places that experience the most dreaded season of them all just have to take what comes and accept it.  I've always said that spring is that much sweeter for those of us who experience winter, but sometimes, like today, it's hard to deal with.

Check out the map above...that's today, Tuesday, January 21st.  Not only have we been having major snowfall since around noon, but the temperatures are expected to plummet to frostbite status later in the evening.  School closed early today and will be closed tomorrow as well.

So, aside from terribly scary and slow-moving driving conditions (my friend Gary took six hours to get home on a normally one-hour drive!) and having to shovel the driveway multiple times, I and many others across the tri-state region are faced with being cooped up in the house for the next 24 hours or so.  Ah, what to do, what to do....will I be productive?  Or not?  How about you?

Here are some pictures I swiped off of my Facebook feed just to show you what it's like out there...

Be careful out there .

Song of the Day - Frozen - Madonna

I don't know why I didn't think of this song yesterday.  I gotta give props to my pal Ivan for posting this on Facebook yesterday.  It is such an appropriate song for the day because many of us here across the states are feeling frozen, literally.  The temps have been in the single digits with wind chills well below zero for the last 36 hours or so, but at least they will rise to the (yikes) 20's today.  Here's Madonna....Happy Hump Day!

Wicked Shot of a Tornado in Branson, Mo

Take a look at this shot of an apparent tornado that touched down in Branson, Missouri earlier today.  A swath of strong storms hit the southeast today, in parts of Missouri, Georgia and Alabama.  As we're currently getting pounded by yet another winter storm (this one's called Ukko???), I'm happy we don't have to deal with this kind of weather up here in the northeast.

Winter Storm Saturn ... Ugh!

When the heck id they start naming snowstorms?  Last month Nemo wreaked havoc on the New York Metro area and now it's Saturn that's becoming a big ole pain in the you-know-what.

"Oh my God, I heard we're getting ten inches."

That was the girl at Dunkin Donuts tonight, after asking me how I braved the weather on my nightly walk.

I don't know, but this freaking weather has had me all screwed up.  It seems I've heard at least ten different scenarios from various sources, including Tri-State Weather, one of my favorite weather sources on Facebook.  First it was snow, then rain, then back to snow again.  Next it was Wednesday into Thursday, which caused one of my pals to cancel a trip he was taking and another to have a flight delayed for hours.

When I woke up this morning, though, the weather wasn't really that bad.  My car was covered in snow, but the roads were just a little wet, and as I drove eastward towards work, the light snow had changed to rain, which is what it was like most of the day.

Looks like a hurricane, no?

So now apparently, Saturn is hovering again, supposedly dumping more snow on us here on Long Island and the rest of the metro area and New England.  I've just checked two sources, again with differing accounts...one calling for 3-5 inches overnight and another for more.  Since I have almost an hour's drive to work, that really sucks!

I don't understand it.  I know that weather is unpredictable, but in this day and age, can't they be just a little more accurate?  My mom always says that weathermen are the only profession where they can get things so wrong and still keep their jobs.  Grrrrr!!!!!

Anyway, it's almost 11PM and there's just a little bit of snow out there...and it looks wet, which is going to be heavy in the morning.  Oh my aching back!  I can't wait till this week is over!

Cabin Fever Gives Me Time to Think

Well it's Sunday night, just about 48 hours since Blizzard Nemo dropped all of that snow on us and 48 hours of being cooped up in the house.  It's times like these when I most wish I had somebody to share the time with, but ah well, I know I'm not the only one.  Still... loneliness sucks especially while you've got cabin fever!

my backyard

It's been a long time since I written a personal post.  It seems that John's World has become a music, roller coaster blog, I know, but although those two things are big parts of my world, they're not the only things.  For the past several months now, I've kept the personal mostly to myself, sometimes because I feel like I have nothing to say, and other times it's because when I do talk about personal stuff, I can get a little sappy.  I know some of my readers like those types of posts and I hope to get to them more often.

Overall I've been a little numb of mind lately, not really focused on anything, and I can pinpoint exactly why or even how to get out of it.  Things have been really strained with my family ever since July and so that part of my life has left me a bit isolated.  I've had an incidence or two with some of my friends, and that's surely contributed.  Work has been grueling...teaching is NOT the glamorous job some people think it is.  And as for guys, well, that part of my life has been the most active, though unfulfilling.

Sometimes I feel as if I'm living the single life I'd envisioned for myself when I first left Joe.  Between the bowling league and the opening of Nuts & Bolts, my social life has gotten so busy out here on Long Island that I've hardly had any time to venture into the city, which I miss.  There've been enough potential suitors out there, though finding someone to date regularly from among them has been next to impossible.  Either they're too into themselves, they just want sex or they're a bit too strange for my taste to pursue.  I'm still waiting for that one to come along that I will know will be "the one" when I meet him, and the longer I go on, the more the prospects for that look bleak.

And so, this is what cabin fever does...it makes me think, and not in a good way.  I keep going back to what I said at the beginning of the new year, that I need to delve back into myself in order to start thinking clearly and start caring about something again.  I've got so many ideas in my head, covering all facets of my life, that I have trouble focusing on any one of them...and so the writer's block that comes with all of this.  (I'm thinking that the place I should start would be Millman's book.  I'm such a 25/7!)

Well, I'm writing now, so that's a start! Let's see where this takes us...

Nemo

In the meantime, look at these pictures of what I am seeing in my world right now.  For those of you living out of this area, be glad...

We're expecting an ice storm sometime during the night tonight, so tomorrow morning's commute is going to be as big a nightmare as Friday night's was for many people.  The roads here are still pretty impassible, with many of them not even plowed yet.  A thick, slushy mess covers the well traveled roads, such as this one near my house:

That's Route 112 in Patchogue, a road that sees plenty of action during a day.  If this is what it looks like after two days, you can imagine what we've got out here...not as bad as Hurricane Sandy, but pretty comparable.  The lesser traveled streets like the one I live on have become very narrow, with plowed-up piles of snow 3 to 4 feet high on either side.  The roadway itself is a highly uneven, packed down mass of icy snow, with slushy mounds like the ones above thrown in around the corners and such.  Here's my street:

As you can see, traveling in the morning is going to be a mess with icy precipitation falling on top of all this.  To make matters worse, my school is one of only a handful that has decided to open tomorrow, albeit late.  Since I work more than 40 miles from my home, this is not good news and I will just have to play it by ear in the morning as to how I should proceed.  One of the things I abhor about our society is that we place work over safety whenever stuff like this happens.  Why do we feel as if the world is going to end if we miss a day or two?  I just don't get it.

Anyway, to those of you traveling in the morning, be safe!

Damn That Was a Lot of Snow!

This isn't a really great picture, but you can see from inside my office on the second floor of my house that it is completely white outside.  I woke up this morning to see that the snow had stopped falling sometime during the night, but I think it was enough anyway.  It turns out that we got much more snow than was expected here on Long Island.  Where early predictions were of around 12 to 16', we got more than two feet!

The snow was falling so hard at one point that I had gone outside to get a head start on shoveling and by the time I had gotten too my driveway, the stoop I had already shoveled was covered in snow already.  Areas on the East End received higher snowfall totals than western areas, with 30.7 inches of snow recorded in Central Islip, more than two feet in Smithtown, Pt. Jeff, Stony Brook and other areas.  We got just around two feet here in Patchogue.  Several motorists were stranded on the Long Island Expressway and had to be rescued by police using snowmobiles.  More than 10,000 are without power.

The northeastern New England states got belted the most, with one area in Connecticut getting a whopping 40 inches of snow.

Before I head out there to clean up and take my own shots, here are a few I got from Facebook:

Batten Down the Hatches

Batten down the hatches, the blizzard of 2013 is on and so is the hype!  Tomorrow there is going to be a whopper of a storm in the northeast, the first real snow we've had round these parts for awhile.  From the looks of it, some wet stuff is going to begin sometime early Friday morning, and by midday the heavier stuff will start falling fast.  Accumulations between 11 and 22 inches are expected to fall throughout the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut tri-state area, and I'd seen earlier in the day that parts north, in Massachusetts  could see as much as 33' of snow!  This one's even got a name: Nemo!

Don't Fall Into the Hype

As usual, the news stations are hyping up this thing with round-the-clock coverage.  In between the dozens of forecasts, we're watching people prepare by emptying store shelves of bread, milk and eggs....oh, and gas, too.  It's really ridiculous, I think, and I also believe that it's the hype that helps to fuel the frenzy gong on out there.  I mean, it's not like we're all going to be holed up for weeks, unable to get supplies.  We survived the Hurricane, didn't we?

The worst part about snow is having to drive in it.  Unfortunately, the dangerous stuff will start around midday, while many people are at work.  I may be a wimp to many, but I'm sorry, I hate hate hate driving in the snow, especially long drives.  Why is work so important that we risk our lives (both real and financial) to go and perform it.  Will the world really stop if there's one less school day, or there's no banks open for a day, or anything else for that matter.  We would all survive!  (Check out Snow Days: Safety vs. Work for more on this particular topic...it's one of my favorite rants!)

So, we'll see what happens in the AM.  So far, nothing I'm involved in has been cancelled, and I have no idea what conditions will be like.  At this point I'm hoping for an earlier arrival of the white stuff so I can just get started with my being holed up, which is going to happen anyway.  So, here's to clearing that early hurdle and making it to that point where I'm just "in for the weekend."  (I hate being single sometimes!)  In the meantime if you're holed up, as well, here are a couple of other pieces to read that I've written on the topic of snow:

November 1, 2012: No Gas; Work, Work, Work; Just One Picture

Well, four days in and new stories, ripple effects of Sandy, are beginning to be reported.  The most obvious problem that's beginning to grow in these parts, aside from the continued power outages and cleanup, are the gas lines.  I first noticed them yesterday out east, and as the day wore on, word was spreading quickly that the gas supply lines have been disrupted, and so more problems...

No Gas

This was the scene all across the affected areas of Hurricane Sandy over the last two days as the supplies of gasoline have hit a temporary low.  Lines for gas went for blocks, worsening as the past two days have creeped on.  As I took my daily walk this evening around Patchogue, the town where I live, I saw that each of the five gas stations I pass along the way were out of gas.  Here's a pump at one of them:

It's hard to read what the sign says, but you can see it's over the buttons where you choose the type of gasoline you want...the message on the sign: No gas.

Apparently, this mess is a combination of problems.  Some gas stations are without power and unable to service customers and the distribution system has been hampered greatly by all of the damage to the entire metropolitan area.  If any of you have seen any photos from NYC today, you can see why I am a little worried about us here on Long Island because really the only way on to the island from anyplace goes through the city.  Dare I say "gas crisis?"

Experts are saying it could be a long time before the system is restored to normal, perhaps up to a week.  Considering I drive 40 miles to work everyday, I may be in trouble!

Source: NBC News

Work, Work, Work

This story segues perfectly into my next topic, which speaks to the sometimes ridiculous nature of our American culture.  I want to start off by saying that there is absolutely nothing wrong with hard work.  I consider myself a hard worker, and I was brought up to believe strongly in the American value that hard work is a virtue.  However, there comes a point where work should not be above all else.

My pal Rich was telling me earlier about these lines he saw in Brooklyn earlier today of people waiting to get on to buses to Manhattan.  The subways in the city are mostly still shut down, and the buses were the only mode of transportation for these people, en route to their jobs.  Rich was flabbergasted at how all of these people were waiting so long only to get crammed on to a bus into the city to get to work.  Here's a photo of that scene:

Can you imagine?

Next, the news covered the traffic getting into the city from the roadways, which are a complete and utter mess!  People sitting in their cars, not moving, taking hours to make their commutes to their jobs in the city, and for what?  Just because they're hard workers?  Or because they're afraid to lose our jobs?  We all suffer through such nightmares, and it's worse when your home is in a shambles or you simply don't have electricity.  No one really can say for sure whether it's one or the other, but in a case such as we have this week, the answer should be that people that don't work in critical occupations should be made to stay home.

Yesterday, my school district was one of only two on all of Long Island that was open.  We had been closed on Monday and Tuesday, like the rest, but the powers that be decided that opening the school was more critical than allowing teachers, staff, and students to be at home, cleaning away all of the mess and trying to gain some sort of normalcy back in their lives.

The power in one of our schools went out early in the day, and the district decided to close for the day today, but tomorrow we are open for business once again.   I will be there, but I won't be happy about it!  My yard and my house are still a mess and I'd love to be able to get through cleaning up.  I've got several friends, and students, who are without power, and I'm sure having to get ready and leave the house for work is more of a hassle than it is probably worth.

We lost three days of school this week.  Many districts lost all five.  As for those two days that we're open, I'd ask if it is worth it?  Is it so much more important to keep a school or a restaurant or a dry cleaner open during these kinds of days?  Or is it more important to give people much needed time to recover from their losses and try and return to a somewhat normal life?  I say the latter.

Of course, where businesses are involved, people lose money, and it's understandable why business owners want to open, but to me this speaks negatively of the nature of our society, where money is above all else.  Is making money so important that people have to spend as much as five hours to get to their job, especially when they've got their own messes at home?  I don't think it's right.  I've always said that no job is more important than my own life, and this disaster is of such magnitude that I think putting our own lives back together far outweighs the need for business owners or ourselves to make a buck.  It really stinks, but what are you gonna do?

Just One Picture

I'd like to share some more photos of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, but it is late and it IS a school night, so I have no more time but to share this one particular picture with you. Most of my readers know of my love for roller coasters, and when I saw this one I couldn't resist.  This one's from Seaside Heights in New Jersey and the image has been floating around since Tuesday.  All I can say is "wow!"
