A Funny Halloween Memory at the Spooky Walk

I’d like to preface this story by saying that I am not only a man, but I’m also a chicken. I’m afraid of lots of things: spiders, snakes, lightning and thunder, dogs (some of them), and especially things that go bump in the night. I can be very jumpy at times, scaring others with my often over the top reactions to being startled.

Halloween is all about being scared, but the kind of scary you experience during Halloween is fun. I’ve got a lot of funny personal memories of Halloween, and many of them involve these haunted hayride/haunted house thingys events that have become so popular in recent years. My funniest personal Halloween memory took place at one such event called the Spooky Walk.

The Spooky Walk is held at a campground in Moriches, NY. It was one of the first of its kind in these parts, and still one of the best. The setting is perfect for scaring the bejeezus out of people and sending others into fits of hysterical laughter. There’s an old cemetery adjacent to the grounds that’s in plain sight for fun seekers as they wait their turn for a walk through the woods.

Vampires, werewolves, and zombies lurk about amongst the trees waiting to pounce on unsuspecting hikers. Mad scientists display their wondrous and odd experiments in their laboratories. Bands of wily pirates beckon walkers to their fiery camp along the lake. And then there are the more recent monsters like Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers (no relation), and Jason.

One year, late in October, Joe, myself and a couple of friends decided to make our annual trip to the Spooky Walk for some frights and laughs. It turned out to be the funniest of all Halloween memories. I remember it was a cold, cold night, an early frost taking a bite out of our fall. The line was long, as it usually was, and we chatted about excitedly waiting our turn to enter the campgrounds and see what new frights these folks had in store for us.

After about an hour’s wait, we finally came to the front of the line. Zombies greeted us at the first turn, triggering the first screams from my friend Vera, a notorious screamer. Slowly, we made our way through the walk. Much of it was the same as it had been the year before, but still very frightening and fun. Then, towards the end of our journey, we came upon a new exhibit.

The four of us walked through a narrow path through some thick brush. Straight ahead of us sat a small outhouse with a door-less doorway. It was dark inside. My eyes fixated on that doorway, fully expecting some sort of creature to come charging out of the darkness towards us. My heart started beating quicker from all the anticipation.

We inched slowly towards the opening, trying to determine which way the path would lead us. My heart raced! Suddenly, there was the sound of a chainsaw being started up. I was the last to see the man in the hockey mask coming out of the bushes to our right, with the revving chainsaw in hand. I instinctively screamed like a little girl, running in the opposite direction, away from this Jason character, and in the process I knocked Joe to the ground.

I turned to see Jason standing over Joe, mask removed, asking him if he was okay. He was fine. He helped Joe to his feet and the four of us continued on our way, the three of them hysterically laughing at my panicked reaction all the way back to the car. We made our way home after a long evening and when we got there, Joe could not find his house keys.

We searched everywhere...in the car, on the ground, and every place in between. Then seemingly out of nowhere, the four of us were hit with the same notion. Uh oh! My friend Joey said. I bet they’re back at the Spooky Walk. Without a word, the four of us jumped back into the car and rode the twenty minutes back to the campground.

We explained the situation to the operators of the event, who brought us over to where Jason lurked at his post. They shut the area down and turned on some floodlights. Sure enough, the keys were laying on the ground right in the spot where I had knocked Joe to the ground in my panic. The three of them looked at me disapprovingly.

What? I was scared!

Once again, we all broke out in laughter. Every once in awhile, when some of us are together, we reminisce about that night. That evening at the Spooky Walk remains as one of my funniest personal memories of Halloween to this day.

Halloween Song of the Day - Time Warp - The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Happy Halloween!

It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
Put your hands on your hips
And bring your knees in tight
And it's the pelvic thrust
          That really drives you insane

Let's do the time warp again!

My favorite of all Halloween songs comes from that classic of horror spoofs, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  Enjoy and have a safe and happy Halloween!

Song of the Day - Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell

I almost forgot that Halloween was coming...and fast!  Here's an oldie, but goodie from 1984 that made my Halloween Top 10 Song list at #9.  The artist is the son of Motown founder Berry Gordy and this was his only hit.  Part of the reason it was a big hit was most likely because of the backing vocals on the chorus.  Oh, yeah, that would be Michael Jackson's voice lending a hand!  Happy Tuesday!

Halloween Song of the Day - I Put a Spell On You - Bette Midler

Happy Halloween everybody! Today I will be showing the film Hocus Pocus to my students, and rather than put up the usual Michael Jackson's Thriller, Time Warp from Rocky Horror, or one of the other great Halloween songs, I wanted to do something different and although this was a kids movie and kind of silly, I still enjoy it when I watch...

Song of the Day - The Monster Mash - Bobby 'Boris' Pickett

Happy Halloween...a few days early! Since there's a storm headed this way and there's a possibility of a week's long loss of electricity, I figured I'd give a nod to Halloween with its oldest and still funkiest song.

October 8, 2012 - A Weekend of Friends New and Old...and NYC!

Yesterday was a very reflective day for me, as you can probably tell from Five Years On...  I started the day off thinking about how I was back then and how my life is now, and I spent a lot of time giving thanks to the people around me who've enriched my life in a myriad of ways.  I posted a note on Facebook saying so and boy was the love thrown right back at me!  As of this writing, that post has gotten 25 comments and 26 'likes.'  I'm a lucky man!

First Sickness of the School Year

Today is Columbus Day and as such the last day of a three day weekend.  I have no plans but to work around the house, write, prepare lessons, and the like, and that's okay because I've had a pretty marvelous weekend and then some.  At this time last week, I had begun to get sick...very sick.  There've been bugs flying all over at school and last week it was my turn to finally catch it.

On Monday I was feeling really bad, lethargic and with the beginnings of a sore throat, and by Wednesday I had a lump in my neck the size of a tennis ball!  That afternoon when I got home I'd felt at my worst.  I fed my kitties and headed straight for the couch, where I slept three hours, then watched a little TV, and then slept some more.  Who'd have known, but that seemed to be all I needed because by Thursday morning my sore throat, tennis ball and all, was gone!  And that's were the goodness began...

Facebook/Live Nation

P!nk

I love going to concerts and I love P!nk, as my readers already know all too well, and so of all the shows that are coming to my area, THAT is the one I did not want too miss.  Thanks to my new pal, Sean, I will be at the Nassau Coliseum on March 25th to see my latest heroine in the flesh.  I'm so excited!   Thanks buddy!

A Weekend of New Friends, Old Friends, and New York City

Beginning on Friday night, I had one of the best weekends in recent memory. That night I had dinner with one of my new friends from bowling, Tim.  Tim is one of the sweetest guys I've met in a long time, and we have a lot in common.  We'd been planning on getting together since that first night of bowling a few weeks ago and we were finally able to meet up for dinner at Perabells, one of Patchogue's most trendy and wonderful restaurants.  The evening was very summer-like and so we dined al fresco with some great food, good wine, and really enjoyable conversation.

The party continued on Saturday night when I decided to finally return to the city to go clubbing.  I had not been there in a long time, and I was finally going to go to XL, but once again it was not meant to be.  I was meeting my friend Ivan, who I had not seen in over a year, and I left it up to him to pick where we were going to go.  Splash was the place, which was really fine by me, and I was pleasantly surprised by the sizable crowd and the great music by DJ Hex Hector.

Ivan and I partied till around 2 a.m. before heading over to the Ritz, which is another place I haven't been to in awhile.  As always, the music and the crowd there was jumping, and before we knew it it was last call for alcohol.  After a quick ride to Dunkin Donuts for a coffee and some long conversation in the car at Ivan's house, I headed home in the wee hours of the morning, which was not good because I had to be back in the city at 12:30 for a date...

A Second Date

About a month ago I met Leigh.  Leigh is someone who just moved here from London earlier in the summer for his job.  We'd met online and actually had the chance to meet in the flesh on Labor Day, where we had a really nice time.  Due to crazy schedules, mostly on my end, we hadn't seen each other since, and we made plans for a second date yesterday, once again in the city.  In spite of the blustery weather, it was one of those wonderful days spent in great company: my companion and New York City...

Jeckyll and Hyde

No matter how many times I go into the city, there is always something new and exciting to experience.  Yesterday, I had the opportunity to do some things I'd long wanted to do, yet never had the chance to, beginning with lunch at Jeckyll and Hyde.  For those of you who never heard of the place, it is a famous eatery/pub in the Village that's kinda sorta Halloween all year round.  A few of us had tried to go in there once before, but the line to get in was a bit too much.  Since it was such a dreary day, and Halloween is still a few weeks away, the place was not too crowded and so we went in.

Kitschy!  Cheesy! Amusing!  Those are three best words I can use to describe Jeckyll and Hyde.  Upon entering, the first thing you notice is how dark it is, so dark that your eyes need to adjust even before you could find and take your seat.  Elements of horror films and the macabre are everywhere, right down to mummies, mad scientists, ravens, jack-o-lanterns and much more.

As soon as we were seated, the waiter asked us if we'd ever been there before and when we told him we hadn't, he warned us that we were going to be harassed by things coming out of the walls and such.  He wasn't joking!  Before long, a Lurch-like character began to lurk around the tables, interacting with patrons in a manner one might expect from a zombie-like butler.  He especially took to Leigh, recognizing the much more authentic British accent than the one he was using, and he came over to our table on more than a couple of occasions.

Then, every once in awhile, one of the ghastly creatures embedded within the walls of the restaurant would suddenly come alive and do a little schtick that was amusing if not cheesy.  At one point a gargoyle even jumped out from above the fireplace to lead a happy birthday celebration for one of the patrons seated nearby.

The food at Jeckyll and Hyde was really the least of the experience.  The menu is mostly pub items.  I dined on fish n chips and Leigh ordered a pumpkin tortellini, which was very tasty.  What really made the lunch so memorable was the atmosphere and the theatrics, and other than accidentally going into the ladies room (don't ask!), the experience was definitely one to remember!

The High Line

Next up on our day was the High Line.  For any of you who don't know, the High Line is an old, elevated railroad line that had been abandoned for years and remade into a city park.  I'd first seen it as an exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art when it was first being designed, and I've had friends who've gone to see it over the summer.  I've been wanting to go for a long time, and when I found it near my parking spot yesterday, I knew I had to go.  Even though fall is here and there weren't many flowers in bloom, it was still pretty awesome to walk through it.

The park begins around 13th Street and runs all the way up along 10th Avenue towards 30th Street, where it ends.  Not only is the High Line dotted with gardens, but works of art, concessions, and a hotel round out the landscape.  Leigh, who'd been there before, told me about how guests in the hotel, right above the park's walkway, would disrobe in front of their windows for all the world to see their twigs and berries.  He'd said that nowadays guests have to sign an agreement not to do that, and wouldn't you know it, just as we approached the underpass to the structure, there was a guy standing there in front of a floor to ceiling window in all his glory for all to see.  Ah, New York! (and no, I didn't take a picture!)

Any-who, Leigh and I walked the length of the High Line, chatting it up and enjoying the occasional sites to be had here and there.  By the time we had completed the journey, it was already getting late so we then headed to Chelsea Market in search of an afternoon coffee, though we ended up on 9th Avenue at a French bakery instead, which turned out to be another cool place!

All in all, the company was great, and the entire day was one upon which I will always look back on and smile.  Leigh is an awesome guy and I hope to know him for a long time to come.  The day was a great capper to a wonderful weekend with friends new and old, and a city I've always loved. Until next time, ciao!

A Halloween Song of the Day Finale - Time Warp - Rocky Horror Picture Show

Source: myLot Photos

It's astounding
Time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll
But listen closely

Not for very much longer

I've got to keep control

And that's how we get this party started! You can say what you want about Halloween songs..."'Thriller' is da bomb!," "'Ghostbusters' rocks!," "'Monster Mash' rules!," but this one is my absolute favorite song for this holiday.

I remember doing the Time Warp
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me

And the void would be calling

LET'S DO THE TIME WARP AGAIN
LET'S DO THE TIME WARP AGAIN

Oh yeah,

It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the riiigghhhttt
Put your hands on your hips
And bring your knees in tiiigghhhttt
But it's the pelvic thrust
That really drives you insa-a-a-a-a-ane

LET'S DO THE TIME WARP AGAIN
LET'S DO THE TIME WARP AGAIN

If you don't know this already, it's quite easy and quite fun. The number comes during the party sequence of the Rocky Horror film and is led by RiffRaff, a sort of Igor character, and his friend Magenta, an evil singing nurse. A narrator helps us along with the steps and the rest of the crew joins in on the fun.

There are more lyrics to the song, of course, but I'll just let you enjoy the scene in the video. My only problem with the whole thing is that it's just too damn short! I used to play it every once in awhile when I deejayed and the crowds always loved it, and of course I played it multiple times at Halloween parties. Good times!

Now you give it a try....

It's just a jump to the left...

Happy Halloween Song of the Day - Thriller - Michael Jackson

Happy Halloween!

This classicly awesome video hit over 100 million views on YouTube, an incredible number, and it's by far the best Halloween video of all time. I remember when it first premiered...everybody was glued to their TV's to watch. With great special effects, a 50's horror movie theme, a rap by Vincent Price, and of course Michael's music, this is still one of the best videos of all time!

A Halloween Song of the Day - Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr.

Source: The Ledger

Today's song was a huge smash when it accompanied the very popular movie back in 1984 and it gets resurrected every single year at Halloween time. If you don't know it, then I'd like to ask you which rock you've been living under...Say it: "I ain't afraid of no ghosts!"

A Halloween Song of the Day - Sweet Transvestite - Rocky Horror

Source: Rocky Music

How'd ya do I,
I see you've met my,
Faithful handyman...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a Halloween cult classic, and this is the first of two Halloween Week Songs of the Day I'll be posting from the movie. This song comes at a time in the movie where our unsuspecting guests (played by Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) first meet Dr. Frank N Furter, brilliantly played by Tim Curry. This is camp at it's best!

'So, come into the lab....and see what's on the slab...

A Halloween Song of the Day - The Addams Family Theme

Source: fanpop

I could not let Halloween week go by without posting this one. The Addams Family (and the Munsters!) were two of America's most beloved monster families and the theme song to this one is just so identifiable! With Morticia, Gomez, Lurch, Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandmamma, and of course Cousin It, this family was "creepy and kooky," for sure!

A Halloween Week Song of the Day - Dark Lady - Cher

Source: iOffer

Today's "Song of the Day" is a classic from Cher. The video is a cartoon that was made especially for the "Sonny and Cher Show" and the storytelling song is about a medium who tells a terrible secret and later pays for the part she plays in it. The lyrics are engrossing and vintage Cher...and the theme of this one is perfect for Halloween!

A Halloween Week Song of the Day - Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell

Source: technodisco

Halloween week has already begun and we start our celebration here with the ultimate ode to paranoia. This one's by Berry Gordy's son, who called himself Rockwell, and it features the background vocals of none other than Michael Jackson. Enjoy!
