Black History Month Song of the Day - Giving Him Something He Can Feel - En Vogue

Mr. Joe Walker

Oh I so used too love En Vogue!  Cindy, Maxine, Dawn and Terry...The Funky Divas of Soul...were smooth, sophisticated, and man could they sing!  This song, to me, epitomizes the type of slow, sultry rhythm and blues they did, though they could funk it up like no other, too!  It's too bad they spent such a short time together. (*I apologize for the quality of the video, but it was the best I could find.)

Song of the Day - Push It - Salt N Pepa

On Sunday night, The Long Island Music Hall of Fame inducted their 2012 honorees and one of the headliners of this year's crop was the classic hip-hop trio Salt N Pepa.  The three girls, who hail from Queens and Brooklyn, are Cheryl James (Salt), Sandra Denton (Pepa), and Diedra Roper (DJ Spindarella), were pioneers of their trade, scoring hits and paving the way for those that followed in a genre that had been mostly for men.

Over the years Salt N Pepa had several hits, including Shoop, Do You Really Want Me, Let's Talk About Sex, Whatta Man, with R&B quartet En Vogue, and this one, which was their first big smash.  Push It actually started off as a B-side to another single, Tramp, but the dubbed out tune with the catchy hook took upon a life of its own and helped put S&P on the map.

So here's to Salt N Pepa....Spindarella, too!  Thanks for all the good times and happy memories!

I Love the 90's Song of the Day - Whatta Man - Salt N Pepa and En Vogue

mp3.rhapsody

Back in 1993, the seven ladies who made up hip hop trio Salt N Pepa and R&B divas En Vogue got together to make this little ditty that's a little hip hop, a little R&B, and a whole lotta good!

Song of the Day - My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It) - En Vogue

I just read yesterday that En Vogue's breakout album "Funky Divas" just had its 20th Anniversary on Saturday and I just had to pay tribute. En Vogue was a foursome of funky divas with powerful voices, plenty of style, and who always conducted themselves with class.

"Funky Divas" was the girls' sophomore set released in March of 1992 and it sent them into the stratosphere, albeit for a short time, with chart-busting, fast n funky songs like this one and "Free Your Mind," and soulful ballads like the smooth "Giving Him Something He Can Feel." It's really too bad that the girls, Dawn Robinson, Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron broke up much sooner than any of us would have liked. Who knows, maybe one day...
