Song of the Day - We'll Be Coming Back - Calvin Harris, featuring Example

Here's a recent one by Calvin Harris. who I'm liking more and more each day. This one combines a nice dance music track with equally good lyrics, and much like other Harris tracks, it's not rough around the edges at all, but kinda smooth. Enjoy and Happy Sunday!

We'll be coming back for you one day...

We’ll Be Coming Back - We’ll Be Coming Back (feat. Example)

We'll Be Coming Back

We took it all apart
But I'm wishing I'd stayed
In the back room something I heard you say
We didn't want to call it too early
Now it seems a world away
But I miss that day, are we ever gonna feel the same?

Standing in the light till it's over
Out of our minds
Someone had to draw a line
We'll be coming back for you one day
We'll be coming back for you one day
I don't even care if I know you
Out of our minds
Sad to leave it all behind
We'll be coming back
We'll be coming back for you one day

[Beat break]

You can see it from afar
We were riding that wave
Blinded by the lights, and it's something I crave
We didn't want to call it too early
Now it seems a world away
But I miss that day, are we ever gonna feel the same?

Standing in the light till it's over
Out of our minds
Someone had to draw a line
We'll be coming back for you one day
We'll be coming back for you one day
I don't even care if I know you
Out of our minds
Sad to leave it all behind
We'll be coming back for you one day
We'll be coming back for you one day

Gonna rise, gonna fall, getting pulled apart
And we all do it all cause it stole our hearts
Gonna light up the skies, so ignore the stars
And we all do it all cause it stole our hearts

[Beat break]

Standing in the light till it's over
Out of our minds
Someone had to draw a line
We'll be coming back for you one day
We'll be coming back for you one day
I don't even care if I know you
Out of our minds
Sad to leave it all behind
We'll be coming back for you one day
We'll be coming back for you one day

P!nk's "The Truth About Love" Track Reviews: "True Love"

There's been a little lull in the P!nk track reviews the past couple of days, and for good reason.  The next song, track #5, is one of my early favorites off The Truth About Love, and I wanted to do something special for this one.

You see, for the past month or so I've been toying around with making silly videos of myself lip-syncing to songs I like, and since YouTube has practically made it impossible for me to post anything new or recent, I decided to make a video of myself, um, doing P!nk's True Love.  That way you can listen to the song as you laugh your ass off and read my take on it.  It's all in good fun and I hope you like it.

True Love features a bridge sung by one of my other favorite female singers, who by coincidence also recently had a little one, Ms. Lily Allen.  Though her part is small, it was very cool that these two know each other and worked together...here's hoping for something new by the Brit very soon.

This song is one of my favorites because it's such a happy and catchy song.  It's even kinda sweet in a P!nk way.  In classic P!nk style, she shows the duality, or really the love/hate feelings, that only come with true love:

Sometimes I hate every single stupid word you say
Sometimes I wanna slap you in your whole face
There's no one quite like you
You push all my buttons down
I know life would suck without you

And next comes the very catchy, and very P!nk-ish, lead-in to the chorus:

At the same time, I wanna hug you
I wanna wrap my hands around your neck
You're an asshole but I love you
And you make me so mad I ask myself
Why I'm still here, or where could I go
You're the only love I've ever known
But I hate you, I really hate you,
So much, I think it must be

True Love is the kind of song you'll like the first time you hear it.  I know I did, and making this video I've probably listened to it at least 100 times already and I'm still not sick of it.  I have no idea whether this one will eventually turn into a single, and of course they'd have to edit it out a bit (and they've done that before, of course), but if they did I'm sure it would do pretty well.

True love, true love
It must be true love
Nothing else can break my heart like
True love, true love,
It must be true love
No one else can break my heart like you

Well, that's all I'm gonna say right now about True Love.  Now click play and try not to laugh too hard.  Comments would very much be appreciated.  And check out the remainder of the lyrics below the vid.
Just once try to wrap your little brain around my feelings
Just once please try not to be so mean
Repeat after me now R-O-M-A-N-C-E-E-E
Come on I'll say it slowly
You can do it babe

At the same time, I wanna hug you
I wanna wrap my hands around your neck
You're an asshole but I love you
And you make me so mad I ask myself
Why I'm still here, or where could I go
You're the only love I've ever known
But I hate you, I really hate you,
So much, I think it must be

True love, true love
It must be true love
Nothing else can break my heart like
True love, true love,
It must be true love
No one else can break my heart like you

(Bridge)

Why do you rub me off the wrong way?
Why do you say the things that you say?
Sometimes I wonder how we ever came to be
But without you I'm incomplete

I think it must be
True love, true love
It must be true love
Nothing else can break my heart like
True love, true love,
It must be true love
No one else can break my heart like you
No one else can break my heart like you (like you)
No one else can break my heart like you

Song of the Day - Whataya Want From Me (Mash-up) - Adam Lambert/P!nk

Thanks to my new friend Sean, I just found out something I should have known before, but didn't.  It turns out that Adam Lambert's hit, Whataya Want From Me?, was actually written by none other than Ms. P!nk.  I had an opportunity to hear a demo version of her singing it and I do think she would've had a major hit with it as well.  It was supposed to appear on the Funhouse album, but never made the final cut.

Here's a mash-up of both artists to give ya a little taste.  Enjoy!

Song of the Day - Just Be - Paloma Faith

Today's song is from a singer I'm unfamiliar with.  Her name is Paloma Faith and she's a British singer, songwriter and actress, and she's sold a lot of records!  A special friend of mine, Leigh, who is a British national himself, turned me on to Faith and this beautiful song.  Her voice is so rich and deep and the song tender.  Take a listen to Just Be and enjoy!

Paloma Faith

Just Be

Let's get old together
Let's be unhappy forever
Cause there's no one in this world
That I'd rather be unhappy with
Let's be exposed and unprotected
Let's see one another when we're weak
Let's go our separate ways in the night
like two moths
But know that you're flying home to me.

I was born thinking
It would all be dreamy
But I know that I wouldn't be happy
that way
You wear me out with frustration and
heartache and anger
But we wait for the wave to wash it away

Don't say nothing
Just sit next to me
Don't say nothing
shhh
Just be, just be, just be.

Let's let go together
Let us unfold one another
And watch all the little things that
once drew me to you
Eventually get on my nerves

I wear you out with frustration
and heartache and anger
But we wait for the wave just to wash it away

Don't say nothing
Just sit next to me
Don't say nothing
shhh
Just be, just be, just be.

When you're sick of the every day
When you're tired of my voice
When you tell me
You'll walk out that door
That's when I know that you'll stay.

Don't say nothing
Just sit next to me
Don't say nothing
just be, just be
Just don't say nothing
Just sit next to me,
say nothing
Just be, just be, just be.

Don't say nothing
shhhhh

P!nk's "The Truth About Love" Track Reviews: "Just Give Me a Reason"

Now here's where the album starts to get really good!  Once I get to this song, it's sing-along time the rest of the way.  Just Give Me a Reason is a duet between our heroine and Nate Ruess, the lead singer of the band Fun.  The song was written between the two with songwriter Jeff Bhasker, and at first the song wasn't meant to be a duet.

"We wrote this first first, the three of us, and I kind of took it home...it was originally just supposed to be me...and I was like, no, this is a conversation, this song, it needs the other perspective."  Indeed, the song reflects on the miscommunication that is common between couples, where one feels something's wrong, something's not quite right between the two, and yet the other doesn't even notice:

(P!nk:)

Right from the start
You were a thief
You stole my heart
And I your willing victim
I let you see the parts of me
That weren't all that pretty
And with every touch you fixed them
Now you've been talking in your sleep oh oh
Things you never say to me oh oh
Tell me that you've had enough
Of our love, our love

Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's been written in the scars on our hearts
We're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again

(Nate:)

I'm sorry I don't understand
Where all of this is coming from
I thought that we were fine
(Oh we had everything)
Your head is running wild again
My dear we still have everythin'
And it's all in your mind
(Yeah but this is happenin')
You've been havin' real bad dreams oh oh
You used to lie so close to me oh oh
There's nothing more than empty sheets
Between our love, our love
Oh our love, our love

P!nk says she had to trick Nate into doing the tune as a duet, and I'm glad she did, because this one's got real potential!  As with most P!nk songs, the lyrics are oh so stellar, poetic and real, and the chorus is tender and beautiful.  Nate's voice works perfectly with the tune and it helps to make Just Give Me a Reason one of my favorites off the album.

P!nk #1 All Over the Place

Well, it looks like a lot of people agree with my assessment of The Truth About Love.  Earlier today, Billboard Magazine reported that the newest album by the one and only Ms. P!nk has debuted at #1 on its Hot 200 Albums Chart.  The record is her very first #1 album (Funhouse peaked at #2), selling 280,000 copies in its first week of release.  The only two albums to sell more copies in their first week this year were Madonna's MDNA and Justin Bieber's Believe.

After just one week, I can already tell that this album will definitely become my pick for #1 of the year 2012, which is a pretty bold statement considering there are still three months left in it and MDNA also came out this year.  Truth is, I just cannot get enough of this one!  When it reaches the end I am every time wanting for more, and all I can do is go right back to the beginning and listen all over again.  The record is that good!

NY Daily News

Before this even happened, the very talented singer-songwriter extraordinaire took to her page to thank fans for their support:

Dudes! Dudettes!

Seriously, I cannot thank you enough for the insane support and love that you've been throwing at me. It's like you just slapped me across the face with a big love slap and I have hand marks to prove it!

Thank you for getting the album, for digging it, for watching all the new shows, and for coming to see me on tour - I can't wait to see all of you! I hope you all are feeling happy about the new music. If anyone doesn't like Kanye you should buy two more albums - just kidding :)
love and bear hugs and big wet kisses xxxxxxxxxxxx

Awwww!!!!  I'm just loving everything about her, can you tell?  I think she's different from all the rest, never a conformist, never shy, and always spot-on honest and up front.  Not only did she receive big news on the album, but its first single, Blow Me (One Last Kiss) also reached #1 on Billboards Hot 100 this week, making it the singer's 8th chart topper.

I'm a published poet!

I tell ya, things never happen when you expect them to.  Back in June, I mentioned that an educational book publisher in Ireland wanted to publish a poem I had written a few years back.  They wanted to include it in a series of poems geared towards 11 and 12 year old students.  Needless to say I was more than a little  excited.

At the time I had never had to deal with something such as this and I had to figure out all the right things to say and do with this woman, Cora, who had contacted me.  I certainly did not want to blow it!  Copyrights had to be figured out and of course, my fee for its use, and after a little wrangling, all the i's were finally dotted and the t's crossed and she told me the book would be out  around August.

Cut to yesterday...

Yesterday was one of the worst days in recent memory.  My job so far this year has been unbelievably stressful, so much so that it's been consuming great chunks of my personal time at home, and I am finding myself with not even a few moments to myself during the school day either, but that's a whole other story... I arrived home from the terrible workday more than a little despondent.  I was tired, irritable and a little down.  That is, until I opened my mailbox.

Among the bills and advertisements in the box was a package that looked like a book.  There was no return label on it and I was curious as to what was inside.  Since this whole poem thing happened so long ago, I'd forgotten about it, and even as I was opening the package I was completely oblivious, but then, there it was!

Racing Ahead is actually a teacher's guide, a companion for a teacher to use with a series of lessons.  It's full of what we call extension activities, or lessons that a teacher can use to enhance a unit for more in depth learning on  topic.  I excitedly flipped through the pages and finally came to my piece, Push and Pull, on page 55.  There were my words embedded within the text of a book, with an illustration and a whole bunch of questions for students that center around the vocabulary and themes within the piece.  What a cool thing!

So yeah, sometimes things come along when you least expect them to, right?  Had I been watching for that book to come I'd have been waiting forever, but it came when I wasn't looking, and on just the right day for me!  I think I may have to go and celebrate this one!  I mean, I've been published before, but time is different!  Anyway, as always, thanks for reading!

Song of the Day - Some Nights - Fun

This, the second single and follow-up to the hugely successful "We Are Young," kind of reminds me a little of that first one, yet still different.  It's got a nice marching band kinda beat and a catchy, sing-along chorus.  Enjoy!

Some Nights - Some Nights

Some Nights

Some nights, I stay up cashing in my bad luck

Some nights, I call it a draw

Some nights, I wish that my lips could build a castle

Some nights, I wish they'd just fall off

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not sure, what I stand for oh oh oh
What do I stand for? Oh what do I stand for?
Most nights, I don't know anymore
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa oh oh
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa oh oh

This is it, boys, this is war, what are we waiting for?
Why don't we break the rules already?
I was never one to believe the hype,
Save that for the black and white I try twice as hard and I'm half as liked,
But here they come again to jack my style

That's alright, I found a martyr in my bed tonight
Stops my bones from wondering just who I, who I, who I am, oh who am I, mm, mm

Well some nights, I wish that this all would end
'Cause I could use some friends for a change
And some nights, I'm scared you'll forget me again
Some nights, I always win, I always win

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for, oh
What do I stand for? Oh what do I stand for? Most nights, I don't know (come on)

So this is it? I sold my soul for this?
Washed my hands of that for this?
I miss my mom and dad for this?
No. When I see stars, when I see stars, that's all they are
When I hear songs, they sound like a swan, so come on
Oh, come on, oh, come on, oh come on!

Well that is it, guys, that is all, five minutes in and I'm bored again
Ten years of this, I'm not sure if anybody understands
This is not one for the folks at home, I'm sorry to leave, mom, I had to go
Who the fuck wants to die alone all dried up in the desert sun?
My heart is breaking for my sister and the con that she called "love"
But when I look into my nephew's eyes,
Man you wouldn't believe, the most amazing things, that can come from,
Some terrible nights, ah (oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa, oh oh)

Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa, oh oh
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa, oh oh

The other night, you wouldn't believe the dream I just had about you and me
I called you up, but we'd both agree
It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance, oh
It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance, oh

P!nk's "The Truth About Love" Track Reviews: "Try"

The third track off of The Truth About Love is also its second single.  This one's a scorching ballad that's destined for success, I'm sure.  The song is all about...you guessed it: trying, which is something I deeply believe in.  Taking risks in love and life is in fact living, and Ms. P!nk says it oh so well:

                                             Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
                                                                        Where there is a flame
                                                                Someone's bound to get burned
                                                                     But just because it burns
                                                               Doesn't mean you're gonna die
You've gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try try
You gotta get up and try try try

Song of the Day - In My Head - David Guetta, feat. Nervo

Did anybody know that David Guetta had come out with a new album?  Well, it's sorta new. Nothing But the Beat 2.0 is a re-release of the original album with six new tracks added, including She Wolf, with Sia, Play Hard, featuring Ne-Yo and Akon, and this one, by far my favorite of the new tracks.  It's got a nice, pulsing beat, and the chorus is catchy and sticks in your head for a while after a listen.  Check it out:

P!nk's "The Truth About Love" Track Reviews: "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)"

I kind of feel funny about reviewing this one, since it's been out for awhile now.  I've already posted it as Song of the Day, but I haven't really commented on the song other than it's new and it's P!nk!  She performed the song at this year's VMA's, starting off with a little Get This Party Started and a little acrobatics and dancing lips and all.

When I first saw the track listing to The Truth About Love, and I saw the title of this song, I expected it to be a ballad, a love song.  Well, it kind of is neither, lol.  Blow Me (One Last Kiss) is a typical P!nk pop song, a catchy and rockish anthem full of her masterfully written words and great hooks.  The song sits currently at #5 on the Hot 100 with a bullet, getting this P!nk train really rolling!

Song of the Day - Love Gun - KISS at Jones Beach, NY-9/22/12

Last night KISS played at Jones Beach Amphitheater with opening act Motley Crue.  It was a rock concert to end all rock concerts, straight outta the 80's, and soooo not my scene these days.  But KISS has been in my life in one way or another for so long that I'm always up to see them.  Besides, it's not just me, but my brother Dave and my sisters Linda and Ann Marie who are all fans, and so usually whenever they come into town we all go together.

I rode in to Jones Beach with my brother and his pal Billy.  I've got to say here that Dave and I are and have always been polar opposites in almost every way imaginable.  I was always the timid one back in the day and he was not shy in the least and he always had a lot of friends...and he and them were always a little on the wild side, again the opposite to my more reserved nature.  Billy is one of his friends from back then and he's just as wild, if not wilder, than my bro, as I got to see last night.

So there, setting the stage...my Madonna-loving self tagging along with my straight as straight can be brother and his pal, and several of their friends who they met up with at the concert.  "Yeah baby, Crue and KISS! Freaking awesome!!!"  Oh, and beer...lots of it!

We tailgated in the parking lot getting our pre-concert buzz on almost until showtime and then headed off to get VIP tickets so we could drink more beer!  God, I don't think I've ever had that much beer in one night in my life!  But it was all good.  Everybody was cool, and of course I made friends with two of the wives that were in the group, lol.  We watched, or rather heard, most of Motley Crue's set from the VIP section, which I didn't mind.  I really hadn't come to see them anyway.

Afterwards it was time for more beer.  We drank and laughed and I just took in the whole scene, fascinated.  Most people were our age, in their forties, the dudes almost all sporting KISS t-shirts and beer bellies and their ladies all dolled up for a night out.  My brother actually impressed me, too, for since he was on medication, he'd offered to drive home so Billy could drink and not have to worry.  Bro stopped drinking early on, which was very cool!

So it was Billy and I who kept chugging along, me trying to match him, but failing to keep up with the big guy.  Unfortunately, he ended up having so much fun he missed the whole main event, the ones we really came to see...

KISS is a band like no other!  Sure, there have been imitators and wannabe's, but there is no other rock band that could ever match their showmanship.  And to think that they're in their 60's (at least Gene and Paul are!) and still doing it like they were in their 20's is simply amazing and a testament to them. As always, the roar of

"You wanted the best, you got the best.  The hottest band in the land, KISS!,"

brought the excitement level to a fever pitch as the greatest show on Earth, now almost 40 years running, took to the stage.

Now I have to admit, I wasn't as impressed with this show as I've been in the past.  Maybe it's because I'm older...they're older...and really much of their show hasn't changed over the years.  Yes, they are still very entertaining, whether you like their music or not, and one can never be bored at a KISS concert, that's for sure.  Maybe I've just been to too many of their shows.

The band played many favorites like God of Thunder, Lick It Up, I Love It LoudRock and Roll All Nite, and even one or two I'd never heard before.  This one, one of my all time favorites from the 1977 album of the same name, features front-man extraordinaire Paul Stanley flying off to a small stage in the middle of the audience to belt out, and it was one of the better moments of the night for me!  Enjoy and Happy Sunday!

P!nk's "The Truth About Love" Track Reviews: "Are We All We Are"

cutetwit

Cut to now, holy wow
When did everything become such a hell of a mess?
Maybe now, maybe now, can somebody come and take this off my chest?

I know you think it's not your problem
I know you think that God will solve them
But if your shit is not together
It'll never be you and me, plant the seed
Open up and let it be

We are the people that you'll never get the best of
Not forget the rest of, rest of (Ooohhh)
We've had our fill, we've had enough, we've had it up here
Are we all we are
Are we all we are

Are We All We Are is the opening track to P!nk's The Truth About Love, and it opens up the album rock anthem-style.  This one oozes toughness, with hard guitar riffs set to the singer's in-your-face, tell it like it is style.  The hook features a chorus of children singing "are we all we are" over and over in response to P!nk's vocals.  It's a great segue for even better stuff to come!
