Today Is Where Your Book Begins - A Song for New School Year

Today is the first day of the school year, and this will be my first lesson:

I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined
I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

To me, the beginning of a new school year is much like the beginning of a New Year, a time of reflection and renewal, and a reminder that the future is a blank page yet to be written.  The only limitations to how far you can go in your story are the limitations you place on yourself..

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions

We all have dreams, and too many of us sadly let them get old and fade from our imaginations without ever thinking or believing, or trying, to attain them.  We get stuck in our 9 to 5's, with our bills to pay and our obligations to do what we do, and the fear of new experience keeps us from ever even trying to touch them, to taste them.

Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

My favorite songs are the ones that inspire, and this one ranks among my all time favorites.  Natasha Bedingfield's words and the music that accompanies them offer up something so simple yet so profound: shedding our fears of the unknown in order to live the fullest life we can live, and filling the pages of our stories with wondrous experience.

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Life is nothing but a series of choices, and every decision we ever make, no matter how big or small, has lead us to where we are today.  No one else, no one else is responsible, and the song Unwritten reminds us that we can and should dare to dream.  Break free,at least every once in awhile, and do things you never expected you might do.  Live!

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open

So yeah, this is a great place to start a new school year, and not only for my students, but for anyone.  What has brought us to now is history, and starting right here, right now, we can make the decision to write the next pages of our books before us, and maybe even reach a dream or two along the way.  Disappointments from the past can not be undone, and so they should just be tucked away within the pages in the encyclopedia of our minds.  Every day, every moment, is a gift, and we must try to fill each new page with lofty stories of this thing we call life.  So remember...

Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

May the new school year bring happiness and growth, lessons learned and dreams come true!
