Flashback Friday Song of the Day - I Wanna Be Sedated - The Ramones

Well, today is the last day of February and tomorrow begins New Wave Month here on John's World. New Wave music came as a direct result of the death of disco and punk in the late 70's, early 80's, and the new genre sort of melded the two, with danceable songs that had a punk edge to them.  Well, since punk pre-dated new wave, I thought that today would be a good day to post a punk song from one of the most well-known punk bands around.

The Ramones were an American punk rock band that formed in 1974 and though they were never a huge commercial success, they epitomized what would come out of this country in the punk movement and their legacy endures today. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 and won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award the following year for their storied existence.  With songs such as Rock n Roll High School, Do You Wanna Dance, Blitzkrieg Bop and others, they've had punk rock fans dancin' in the aisles for 40 years now.  Here's one of their most popular tunes ever, a song that plenty of people can relate to in this crazy world of ours.  Check out I Wanna Be Sedated...

Song of the Day - Get Lucky - Daft Punk, with Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and Stevie Wonder

Here is the Grammy Award winning Record of the Year by French electronic duo Daft Punk, with RB crooner Pharrell Williams, disco impresario Nile Rodgers, and a little help from the inimitable Stevie Wonder.  Oh, we did go back in time last year, didn't we?

Three Grammy Performances That Had Me Watching

Well, I am already getting mixed signals from people on whether or not they enjoyed the Grammy Awards last night.  I've heard complaints and praise from friends, and I'm going to put myself in the yay category.  I will say thank God for DVR's, though, because I got to watch the whole three and a half hour show in less than two hours, and I got to miss all of the stuff I wasn't really interested in, making the rest gravy.  What I did watch, I liked.  Well most of it anyway...

P!nk

Oh, one of my favorite ladies of music was both a nominee and a performer last night, but I was just a little...a wee bit, disappointed, in the performance.  I had thought she was only going to be doing the Grammy nominated Just Give Me a Reason, but in a nicely surprising twist she did a mini, two-song set ending with that duet and beginning with Try.

Being given the opportunity to do two songs shows just how highly regarded P!nk has become, but in the years that I've followed her, I guess I was waiting for something a little newer and fresher.  Not that her performance wasn't great, but it was a little too reminiscent of her famed appearance in the 2010 show, especially the acrobatics during Try.  She sang the opener perched high on a trapeze above the stage, showing off her physical prowess, grace and vocal range all at the same time before hitting the actual stage to replicate the beautifully choreographed dance sequence from the video.

Nate Ruess then came onto the scene to begin his part of the duet as P!nk went off stage to change her costume.  This killed it a little for me, as the song is so beautifully written from beginning to end that missing that first verse left a void in the performance.  All in all, I would guess that a lot of people loved the performance, and it was good, but being the avid P!nk fan that I am, perhaps I'm being a little too critical. Anyway, check out P!nk's performance.

Macklemore, Lewis, Mary Lambert, and Madonna

One of the moments I looked forward to the most was Madonna's appearance with Macklemore and Lewis, who won four Grammy's (Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for Thrift Shop.)  The duo had performed the song at the MTV Awards in August, with Jennifer Hudson joining Lambert on vocals to the chorus, and I assumed that's what we were going to get with Madge last night, but oh no, we got something bigger...much bigger.

First of all, I was NOT crazy about Madonna's look.  It was a little ghetto, a little pimp, a little like her character from the Music video, only not nearly as good.  She carried a cane which, I dunno, was a little strange.  She came in towards the end of the performance and started out singing a much underrated universal love song, Open Your Heart, to the music of Same Love, which I did enjoy.  That's just about when all of the craziness happened.

Queen Latifah, who had introduced the segment, announced that 33 couples, both gay and straight, would be joining hands in holy matrimony right then and there.  As you can imagine, the scene was pandemonium and a spectacle, and the stunt also received lots of press, from both sides of the aisle.  Overall, I didn't enjoy the bulk of it, maybe again because I'm such a Madonna devotee and I can be overtly critical when it comes to her.  Check it out on Billboard if you haven't seen it already and decide for yourself.

Dark Horse

By far my favorite performance of the evening was Katy Perry's Dark Horse.  Any of you who follow me know that I've loved, loved, loved this song since the very first time I heard it, and judging from its success, so have many other fans.  The unintentional smash was given a nicely choreographed (way better than her appearance under the Brooklyn Bridge, also at the MTV Awards, doing Roar) number that was very dark, very Covenish.  Check this one out right here.

Of course there were plenty of other performances that people may have enjoyed.  Beyonce and Jay Z opened up the show with a rousingly sexual performance of Drunk In Love and big winner Lorde delivered an intense version of her Grammy-winning Royals.  If other performances of the night, such as Nine Inch Nails or Ringo Starr or Paul McCartney are more your style, I highly suggest you check out Billboards Grammy page for a whole lot of coverage.

Song of the Day - Royals - Lorde

One of the big winners from last night's Grammys was New Zealand native Lorde, whose Royals garnered big wins as Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.  Her performance was memorable, to say the least.  You can check that out here if you like, or watch her perform live on the Jimmy Fallon Show right here...

Tonight's Grammys Is Gonna Be Good!

As I mentioned earlier, today is going to be a TV day for me, which is something I rarely ever say.  First, this afternoon is the big outdoor hockey game at Yankee Stadium featuring the NY Rangers and the New Jersey Devils, and then tonight is one of the biggest nights of the year in the music industry: The Grammys. This year's show is going to be extra exciting for me, as two of my favorite singers will be performing amidst all of the hoopla and craziness that usually accompanies these kinds of shows.

Who can forget this classic performance by
Ms. P!nk during the 2010 Grammy Awards show?

The Performances

Among the many musical performances of the evening, which include Daft Punk, John Legend, Lorde, Katy Perry, and Robin Thicke, just to name a few, are two of my very favorite ladies of song: Madonna and P!nk.  First up, P!nk will be performing her Grammy-nominated duet with Nate Reuss, Just Give Me a Reason, and then Madonna comes out of her hiatus to perform with Macklemore and Lewis, with Mary Lambert, on Same Love.  This should be good!

And the nominees are...

Record of the Year
Get Lucky - Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers
Royals - Lorde
Locked Out Of Heaven - Bruno Mars
Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke ft. T.I. & Pharrell
Radioactive -Imagine Dragons

The biggest award of the night features some pretty stiff competition.  All are great tunes, and I'd love to see Lorde take it, though the winner is anyone's guess.

Album of the Year
The Blessed Unrest - Sara Bareilles
Random Access Memories - Daft Punk
Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City - Kendrick Lamar
Red - Taylor Swift
The Heist - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Since I'm not too familiar with most of these albums (tsk, tsk!), I hesitate to make a prediction here, but somehow Taylor Swift always seems to win big, so....  I'm rooting for Macklemore and Lewis!

Song of the Year
Just Give Me a Reason - P!nk
Locked Out of Heaven - Bruno Mars
Roar - Katy Perry
Royals - Lorde
Same Love - Macklemore and Lewis

Ooh, lots of good choices here, and you probably already know who my favorite is!  (I also think this one's going to win.)

Best New Artist Nominees:
James Blake
Kendrick Lamar
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Kacey Musgraves
Ed Sheeran

Macklemore & Lewis!  Rock on!

Best Dance Recording
Need U - Duke Dumont
Sweet Nothing - Calvin Harris, featuring Florence Welch
Atmosphere - Kaskade
This Is What It Feels Like - Armin Van Buuren
Clarity - Zedd

This one probably won't be shown on the telly, but since my focus is almost always on dance music, I felt I should include it here.  My pick in this category would be Calvin Harris, but since Clarity was played so much throughout the year, I'm predicting a Grammy for Zedd.

So yeah, tonight's Grammy show should be a good one to watch, even better than usual.  So tune in tonight at 8 on CBS, and stay tuned here for more commentary after the show.

Music News Bytes: Adele Spanks Chris Brown; JT Does R&B in B&W; Ri-Ri's 'Stay' Video Premiere

Music News Bytes is a collection of short news items that I follow on the Web.  If you're into the same type of music I am, that is pop, dance, R&B, and such, check it out...

Adele Spanks Mr. Brown

Well the big story of the day today, of course, was the Grammy Awards and all the little side stories that came out in its aftermath.  I found one particularly interesting, one that involved the unlikely trio of Chris Brown, Frank Ocean, and Adele.

A photo appeared today on the Facebook page of my friend Dane McFadden, one that was taken last night just after Ocean had won an award for Best Urban Contemporary Album, a category in which Brown had also been nominated. The photo shows Ocean getting up to accept his Grammy, with everyone else around him standing and applauding, that is everyone else except Brown, who can be seen directly behind the winner in his seat with a not-so-happy look on his face.

 Adele, Chris Brown, Frank Ocean

It was after that when the British songstress confronted the sore loser, apparently giving him a good scolding for being so rude.  Though cameras never picked up what Mama Adele said to the brat, you can clearly see that Brown had met his match.  You go girl!  (For more on the story, check out metro.co.uk)

Adele, Chris Brown

J.T. Does R&B in B&W

Looking all dapper in suit and tie, and magically transformed into black and white, Justin Timberlake did a two-song set that made me even more nervous about how I'm going to like his upcoming The 20/20 Experience.  The first song he did was the album's debut single, Suit n Tie, which to me is not very memorable and waaaayyyyy too much rhythm and blues.  I'm not saying I don't like R&B, but I prefer dancey stuff, like a lot of what he put out on FutureSexLoveSound.

The second song, called Pusher Love Girl, was very similar.  Oh it's smooth and it's good for what it is, but it doesn't make me as excited as I was upon hearing that JT was back.  Anybody else feel that way?  Anyway, the performance was good, with Jay-Z joining in on the first and some smooth moves by JT throughout.

By the way, I came across a review, with audio, of another new song by Justin called Mirrors.  The track is 8 minutes long, but as the reviewer says, this one sounds much more like old Justin.  Check out the review, and the song, on Popcrush.  Justin did another song at his pre-Super Bowl gig last week...another R&Bish ballad called That Girl, which I kinda like.  Check that one out here.   Ooh, I can't wait to review this album!

New Music

I love the prospect of new music, especially when everything I've got in my iTunes library seems old.  More tidbits have leaked out on new stuff from J-Lo, Destiny's Child, Eminem, and a brand new song by Depeche Mode, Heaven, which you can check out on zap2it. It's a little dark, not unlike old Depeche Mode stuff, but maybe just a wee bit darker...

Ri-Ri's 'Stay' Video Debuts

I'm very excited to announce that Rihanna has debuted her new video for the song Stay, which is one of my favorites off of Unapologetic.  The video for the haunting duet with Mikky Ekko features our star nekkid in a bathtub for mostly all of the four-minute clip, and it's somehow pretty poignant.  Check it out on Eonline.

Grammy Winners

Well I've yet to watch the Grammy Awards (I've got it on my DVR, which I will watch later), but of course the winners have all been awarded and I must say, not bad on my part!  On Saturday, I posted a few notes and predictions on the major pop categories and I did alright.  Let's take a looksie...

Record of the Year - Somebody That I Used to Know - Gotye

I said that this one should have won and it did!  Go me!

Song of the Year - We Are Young - Fun

Two for two!

Best Pop Solo Performance - Set Fire to the Rain - Adele

You see, here's where I have sort of a problem with award shows.  This is a great song, but it was released two years ago!  I know, I know, it hit the charts in 2012 so it was eligible.  I wanted Katy Perry's Wide Awake to win this one, and I believed that Carly Rae would take it.  Adele's tune is better than both, but hmmmm?????  By the way, did you see her horrible dress last night?  That thing was louder than her pitch!

Best Pop Duo/Solo Performance - Somebody That I Used to Know - Gotye

I guess if this one won Record of the Year, it would win in this lesser category.  I should have guessed it!  Ah well, 2 out of 4 ain't bad.  Here are some other winners from last night's show:

Album of the Year - Babel - Mumford & Sons

Best New Artist - Fun

Best Pop Vocal Album - Stronger - Kelly Clarkson

Best Rock Song and Performance - Lonely Boy - Black Keys

Best Rock Album - El Camino - Black Keys

Best Alternative Music Album - Making Mirrors - Gotye

Best Dance/Electronica Album - Bangarang - Skrillex

Best R&B Performance - Climax - Usher

Best Traditional R&B Performance - Love on Top - Beyonce
Best Urban Contemporary Album - Channel Orange -- Frank Ocean
Best R&B Album - Black Radio - Robert Glasper Experiment
Best R&B Song - Adorn -- Miguel
Best Rap/Song Collaboration - No Church In The Wild - Jay-Z & Kanye West Featuring Frank Ocean & The-Dream

Best Rap Performance - N****s In Paris - Jay-Z & Kanye West
Best Rap Album - Take Care - Drake
Best Rap Song - N****s in Paris - Jay-Z & Kanye West
Best Latin Pop Album - MTV Unplugged - Juanes
Best Country Solo Performance - Blown Away - Carrie Underwood
Best Country Duo Performance - Pontoon - Little Big Town

Best Country Album - Uncaged - Zac Brown Band

Best Country Song - Blown Away -- Carrie Underwood (Josh Kear & Chris Tompkins, songwriters)

The 55th Annual Grammy Nominees for Pop Songs

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards will be telecast this Sunday, February 10th on CBS and I thought I'd throw a few picks in from the main category of pop music, just for fun, and also so I can throw my opinion in on some music from the past year...

Record of the Year

Lonely Boy - The Black Keyes
Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) - Kelly Clarkson
We Are Young - Fun
Thinkin Bout You - Frank Ocean
We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together - Taylor Swift

This one's a really difficult category this year.  All six of these songs are wonderful in their own way, and they cover a wide variety of genres.  The Keys' Lonely Boy is a fast-moving rock classic, Kelly Clarkson's #1 single off her eponymous album is an uplifting pop ditty, and Fun had a genuine coming of age anthem with We Are Young.

Gotye came out of nowhere to give us one of the coolest songs of the year, and Frank Ocean's Thinkin' Bout You is a modern R&B classic.  Rounding out the six nominees is country music sweetheart Taylor Swift with her sugary sweet We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.

Who should win?
Like I said, this is a tough one, but I'd give it to Gotye because this particular song was very all over the place for much of the year, more-so than any of the other records on this list.

Who Will win?
Swift.  She's just seems to be the darling of awards shows.

Song of the Year

The A-Team - Ed Sheeran
Adorn - Miguel
Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepson
Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) - Kelly Clarkson

The songs in this category are nominated for songwriting, and since like most of you I recognize songs by the artist, that's who I listed above.  I wasn't familiar with the first two songs nominated in this category until I began writing this post.  The first one, The A-Team, is also written by Brit artist Ed Sheeran and it's a melodic, folksy song that's pretty darned good.  The song was more of an international hit than it was here, though it became kind of a sleeper hit late in the year, peaking at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Miguel's Adorn is a smooth, silky R&B ballad that's got a really nice groove.  The song is from Miguel's second album, Kaleidoscope Dream, and it peaked at #17 on the charts.  Call Me Maybe...well...what can I say about that one?  I'll give the songwriters credit for writing a killer hook that stayed in all of our heads for much of the year.  Finally, we're down to Clarkson and Fun (see above).

Who should win?
Having only heard it once, I might go with Sheeran's tune.  It is a really good piece of songwriting and after only one listen I'm planning on downloading it.  If he doesn't get the nod, I think Fun should win it.

Who will win?
My thoughts are with Ms. Kelly Clarkson, who solidified her image as a bona fide pop/rock/country/dance star with not only this song, but her entire set.

Best Pop Solo Performance
Set Fire to the Rain (Live) - Adele
Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) - Kelly Clarkson
Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepson
Wide Awake - Katy Perry
Where Have You Been - Rihanna

Who should win?
I'm partial here to Perry, who's got such a way with pop songs...

Who will win?
I think that if Jepson wins in any category, it'll be this one.

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
Shake It Out - Florence + the Machine
We Are Young - Fun
Somebody That I Used to Know - Gotye
Sexy and I Know It - LMFAO
Payphone - Maroon 5 & Wiz Khalifa

Who should win?
My pick in this category would be Fun.  Once again, their anthem is a great mix of songwriting, drama, and performance.

Who will win?
I think the prize will be given to Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa.  If Swift is the darling of awards shows, so is Adam Levine in the world of pop these days.

Well, those are all the categories for pop songs.  To see nominees for all of the other categories including Album of the Year, Best New Artist, and more, check out the Grammy's.

February 15th, 2012 - Writing Wednesday

It's hard to believe it, but Writing Wednesday is here already and all I've got this week is stuff from John's World. Here's a recap of some of this week's top stories:

Whitney Houston

Several big things have happened this week, most notably the tragic death of singer Whitney Houston. The story broke out early Saturday night and my first reaction was to do an impromptu tribute featuring one of my favorite Whitney songs...

If tomorrow is judgement day
And I'm standin' on the front line
And the Lord ask me what I did with my life
I will say I spent it with you

R.I.P. Whitney Houston "My Love Is Your Love"

Of course, I couldn't let the death of such an important person in my music world go with just a single song and a note. Like many others, Whitney Houston will forever be a part of the soundtrack of my life and I just had to pay some sort of tribute to the gifted songstress who touched many with her words and her voice. Check out Memories and Songs of Whitney Houston.

Along with all of the tributes and news coverage of Whitney's death came an ugly story that I first read on Monday and had to share. It's really hard to believe, and sad too, that such disgusting racism still exists among us. A Fox News' report of the death of Whitney Houston elicited upwards of 4,000 comments on their Facebook page, and many of the comments are appalling, to say the least. I'm ashamed to call some of these people Americans. Check out the story below:

Fox Viewers Show Their True Colors with Ugly Diatribes Against Whitney Houston

The Grammy's

The other big story this week, of course, was the 54th Annual Grammy Awards show that aired on Sunday night. The show had its' moments, with superb performances by Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, David Guetta, and a heartfelt rendition of "I Will Always Love You" by Jennifer Hudson. Nicki Minaj raised quite a few eyebrows with her, um, strange performance, too, but the big story of the night was Miss Adele.

MJB Pulling for Adele at 54th Annual Grammy Awards

On the day of the show, I read a piece online that one of my favorite singers, Mary J Blige, was a big fan of Adele and that she was hoping for a six-Grammy sweep by the British phenom, which is of course what happened. Adele was simply adorable at the Grammy's, beautiful, gracious, and super endearing all at once. Her down-to-earth persona is a big part of what makes this very talented so special, and Mary wasn't the only one, I'm sure, who was happy for her big sweep.

In the show's after-buzz, the singer's people announced that she had decided on the newest single from the Album of the Year, "21," a more upbeat "Rumor Has It." Read on...

"Rumour Has It" to be Adele's next single

A Rant for the Week

There was a story buzzing the other day about Madonna's Super Bowl performance that got my juices flowing. During the performance of "Gimme All Your Luvin," rapper M.I.A. flipped the bird, which was caught on camera. Yahoo ran a story days after speculating whether or not the NFL would take action against the British born star. To me, the story was just another example of irresponsible sensationalism that only works to fuel outrage at the incident, which beforehand had been relatively obscure.

The story reminded me of another Super Bowl performance incident that actually worked to dismantle the highly successful career of one Janet Jackson, and I just had to say something about it:

Fingers and Birds, Nipples and Careers: WTF?

I haven't seen any other news stories on the web since this one appeared, which I hope is a sign of the story fading. Should I see or hear anything further on it, you will surely hear about it here...

What Happened to Macaulay Culkin?

British online magazine The Sun ran a story on "Home Alone" star Macaulay Culkin, who was photographed in NYC late last week looking simply awful. In response to the story, Mac said that he was doing just fine, but judging from the picture, he doesn't look well!

Song of the Day - Beautiful People - Chris Brown featuring Benny Benassi

Today's Song of the Day is by perennial bad boy and now Grammy Award winner Chris Brown. Brown took home a nod for Best R&B Album at last night's awards ceremonies, where he performed a short medley of songs from his "F.A.M.E." album, including this one. I included it in my Top 30 Dance Songs of 2011 because I think it's a great dance song and that's why I honor it again today with a Song of the Day post.

Of course, Brown was not nearly the biggest story at this year's show. Adele, whom I wrote about yesterday, was the big winner last night, taking home all six Grammy's that she was nominated for and making a triumphant return to singing with a nice rendition of "Rolling in the Deep." For a complete listing of last night's winners, check out a wonderful piece by a writer friend of mine, Victoria Leigh Miller:

In the meantime, here's Chris Brown:

MJB Pulling for Adele at 54th Annual Grammy Awards

Tonight is the 54th Annual Grammy Awards and hopefully it'll be a great night for Adele, who is nominated for six awards this year. The young impresaria will be performing at the show for the first time since throat surgery in November, and I am looking forward to watching. MTV recently interviewed another favorite singer of mine, Ms. Mary J. Blige, who threw her hat into the ring for Adele:

"I'm sure an Adele fan and I love what she's done this year. Her album was amazing. She's amazing and I'm just rooting for her. I'm rooting for everybody. But you really just want that one person to get what they deserve. Finally. And not give it to someone else [just] because. Just win all six of her awards, you know?"

I love it when artists openly appreciate other artists for the work that they do. To me it's classy and I think it's really cool that MJB loves Adele, too!

Here are the six award categories in which Adele is nominated:

Record of the Year - "Rolling in the Deep"

Album of the Year - "21"

Song of the Year - "Rolling in the Deep"

Best Pop Solo Performance - "Someone Like You"

Best Pop Vocal Album - "21"

Best Short Form Music Video - "Rolling in the Deep"

For a listing of all the nominees for the Grammy's, click to their website here.

NOTE: On short notice, there will be a special tribute to Whitney Houston at tonight's show featuring Jennifer Hudson. Houston won six Grammy's during her career and had been nominated a staggering twenty-six times overall. This show is definitely being DVRed, lol.

Is Gaga's "Heavy Metal Lover" the right choice to be the next single?

Pop culture website Popcrush is reporting this morning that Lady Gaga has decided on what will be the next single off of 2011's "Born This Way" album, and "Heavy Metal Lover" is the choice, and in my opinion not the best one.

Though there's been a lot of negativity towards this album from the get-go, no one can call it a flop by any means. Four of its five singles thus far have hit the top ten ("Born This Way," "Judas," "The Edge of Glory," and "You & I"), while the most recent one, "Marry the Night," has barely cracked the Top 100.

As I've said before, even though this one is way different from her "Fame/Fame Monster" records, it's a good album nonetheless, and I can think of at least three other songs that would probably do better than this gothy, synthy track.

Three songs on "Born This Way" immediately come to mind when I think of what would do well on the charts. Each of them would classify as pure pop songs, with catchy choruses and equally appealing music tracks. The three songs I'm talking about are "Hair," "Fashion of His Love," and "Bad Kid." If you don't know em and would like to check them out, just click on the title to be taken to the song on YouTube and see if you agree with me.

Reports say that Gaga will be performing "Heavy Metal Lover" at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards on February 12th. (Reports that Gaga will be both opening and closing that show are still just speculation at this time.) By then we'll see what kind of reception the song gets. As for me, well...what do I know?

Here's a homemade video featuring the song. Check it out and see what you think. As always, comments are appreciated.
