My Interview with Mandy's Pages - Friday's Star

Yesterday I was featured as the 'Friday's Star' on Mandy's Pages, a website dedicated to promoting writers on the Web.  It's always exciting to be asked for an interview, and this was the 7th time I've received such an honor.  This interview was, of course, more in time with where I am today as a writer, and it hints at a larger project that I've just begun working on.  So please check out my interview at Mandy's Pages.

December 5th, 2011 - Yahoo Voices; Giving Thanks - Relationships; Odds n Ends

I’m happy to say that today I am still riding the wave of a high that’s been with me now for almost a week. For whatever reason, perhaps bolstered by my birthday last week, nothing has been getting to me lately. Not that anything has changed in my life; I just realized that from all the love I got last week, I have a pretty darned good life and I shouldn’t let things get me down.

I found a post the other day on Facebook that I shared on my own wall:

Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen.

It’s a good quote, don’t you think? Anyway, for whatever reason I’ve been keeping a positive attitude about my life these days, and I just hope it sticks around for awhile. It’s been too long since I’ve really posted a real blog post here, and there’s a lot to talk about…

Yahoo Voices

I mentioned the other day that the Yahoo Contributor Network has a new name…and a new attitude! It’s really a shame, but ever since Yahoo took over the former Associated Content, things have definitely gone by the wayside for many writers, including myself. Many of my fellow writers have gone off to other sites permanently leaving the old AC for greener pastures and though I still keep in touch with them, it’s not the same.

I can understand why they’ve left, especially with this newest incarnation. Though I knew of a couple of changes happening the other day, most namely the look of the articles (all on one page now!), I hadn’t realized a major change until I experienced it yesterday. After hours of penning a review of Rihanna’s hot new album, “Talk That Talk,” I realized that the ability to publish articles immediately was taken away. All pieces must now be reviewed before publishing and from my own experiences that can take days. That was one of the best things about Y!CN, and now it’s gone!

This latest change invariably caused another one of my best writing buds, Michele Starkey, to decide to quit altogether. She leaves with other old favorites such as Abby Greenhill, Nancy Canfield, and a whole host of others who left the site within the past year. It’s starting to feel a lil’ lonely over there, for sure. I don’t know, but I’ve been with the site for more than four years now and even though it’s changed so much and I’m making less and less money over there, I just can’t seem to break away completely. Call me sentimental, but I’m gonna hang for a little!

Oh, and they did publish my “Rihanna’s ‘Talk That Talk’: A Track by Track Review,” which you can check out here.

Clubbing

This weekend was kind of a clubbing bust for me. I had been asked to go to Ritz on Friday for a birthday drink with my pal Ivan (they were having a special Kylie event, too!), but I had my work Christmas party that night so I couldn’t make it. I ended up hitting the Eagle once again, this time with my pals Blanche and Dita. It was fun, but after a long week of being out every night I was tired, and it definitely carried through to Saturday.

I had planned on hitting Splash and Ritz on Saturday nights, which I did, but stopping by my pal Bessie’s for a visit beforehand like I did a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, she had to cancel at a late notice and I found myself in the city before ten. I had told my friend Paul I’d give him a ride home later on otherwise I would’ve headed home right then and there. I was still tired and feeling like I was coming down with something, but I went.

Splash was okay and the Ritz was packed, and before long I was ready to head home, but I hadn’t yet met up with Paul. He was going to try a new place, Club 57, before Ritz and we were supposed to meet up there. I guess he was having a good time because he never answered my text until after I had left the city until around 2AM. It turned out alright, though, because he had a place to crash for the night. He told me the next day how great Club 57 was, so it looks like I’ll be trying out a new place soon!

Giving Thanks

Well, I’ve really gotten behind on giving thanks for the things in my life. Even though Thanksgiving is long behind us now, I’ve still got 8 more Thanksgiving Thanks to share and here’s one more for today:

My Relationships

For someone my age, I guess I haven’t been in too many relationships to date. Of course since I am single today I can say that none of them ended on a good note, well that’s because they ended, lol. But I do want to give thanks for the good memories associated with them, of which there were many. Aside from a few not too meaningful relationships in my life, there are two that I am especially thankful for, and those are my last two.

Joe

I met Joe on June 4th, 1987, and we ended up being together for over twenty years. For the longest time since our breakup, I spent a lot of time regretting our time together, which I now realize was foolish all along. Joe and I shared many happy memories together, too many to recount, and as I’ve looked through a lot of old pictures these past few weeks, many of them gave me smiles thinking about them. Joe is a special guy with a good heart, and he was a great partner in my life for twenty-plus years. I am grateful to have had him in my life!

Him

I feel really silly saying ‘him,’ but I haven’t used his name here to date and since we don’t speak often I don’t feel right sharing it here now without any kind of warning. The ‘him’ I’m talking about is, of course, the last meaningful relationship I had which ended earlier this year. He came along in my life when I least expected it, and he brought back those great feelings you get when you’re in a new relationship with someone. For a few weeks there, I was as happy as I’d ever been.

Things didn’t go the way I had hoped with him, and a lot of the hurt I felt over it was painful, but I realize that perhaps I was a little selfish about a very adult decision he had made with his heart and that it had nothing to do with me. Last Tuesday night, right around midnight, he’d sent me a happy birthday message on Facebook. Though we’ve had contact here and there since the summer, it was the first time he made me smile in a very long time. His message presented with it a personal gift, and It just reminded me of how special a person he still is. Even though it still hurts sometimes to think back on that time, I can remember the sunshine he brought into my life even for a little while and be content in the knowledge that I got to experience it, and for that I am grateful.

Odds n Ends

It’s getting late…way past my bedtime, but there are a couple of things I still wanted to share:

There’s a lot of Madonna news out there today. Besides a new song being leaked today (“Masterpiece”), it was confirmed that she will in fact be playing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show this year. My sometimes sick friend Dita has been all over the story, finding a strange enjoyment in the equally strange commentary on it. Check it out here.

Montmorency Falls, Quebec, Canada

I got some exciting news earlier today. It looks like the French club in school will be making another trip to Canada this February and guess who just may be chaperoning? I went to Quebec with the group two years ago and it was awesome! I’ll be posting some pieces I wrote on that trip in this week’s "Writing Wednesday."

Well, it’s been real! As always, thanks for reading and have a great Tuesday!

November 3rd, 2011 - Comfortably Numb; R.I.P. John Gugie; Six Word; No Excuses

Well folks, we’re almost there, another weekend, and it looks like the gorgeous weather we’ve been having here on Long Island is going to be with us through the weekend and beyond. It’s been a relatively quick week for me, but still I am looking forward to being off and of course, going dancing once again. I must say, life has been pretty stagnant lately…nothing much going on here.

Comfortably Numb

In a lot of ways I’m feeling pretty numb these days, not happy and not sad, just kind of going through the motions of daily life. In a lot of ways I am trying to keep a positive outlook on everything as I wade through the stagnancy, so that’s been working to my advantage, or at least my daily mood, and I’ve been pretty productive, for me anyway, which has helped too.

November is here and it’s my birthday month, so I always love this time of year. It’s also a really short month for school days, as Election Day, Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving provide us with five extra days of respite from the daily grind. School has been hectic, at the very least, and probably the hardest thing about it has been keeping kids motivated. I feel like I’ve been doing a lot more yelling than teaching lately, so the broken up month will hopefully work to ease both my moods at school and the kids behavior…or not, lol!

Rest in peace John Gugie

This morning I was awakened to some very sad news. For the third time in recent memory, a fellow writer passed away suddenly. I first met John Gugie through another writer friend of mine, Karen Bishop. The two of them had a sort of cyber-relationship going on through Facebook and presumably they met through what was then Associated Content.

For that past year or so, I watched as their relationship blossomed into what seemed like one of the most genuine things I could have imagined, though they were limited to Facebook and telephones as they lived in separate states. Night after night I watched as the two of them would playfully comment with one another and post songs on each other’s walls. It was always very cute. Though such a relationship is hard for me to even imagine, anyone who was friends with the two of them on Facebook could plainly see that their love and devotion for one another was real.

A few months back, Karen had a stroke of bad luck and needed help for a move she would have difficulty making. John came to her rescue by starting a “Help Karen Move” Facebook group in order to help her raise some much needed funds. Though I don’t know all of the specifics, I think the two of them found a kinship in being fellow health sufferers. I believe John was handicapped in some way and I know that poor Karen has been a long time chronic pain sufferer.

John was a very outspoken individual, who was always honest and plentiful with his upfront and sometimes colorful Facebook commentary. Here are some of John’s quick-witted and funny comebacks to my comments:

Me: Oh honey, cover your mouth when you yawn. It’s not pretty!

John: Toss a Habanero pepper in her mouth.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me: Ugh, now I need a nap! Sometimes days off are just as busy as if you’d worked. Now if I only had a hammock in my backyard.

John: Cool, like Gilligan’s Island. I get Maryann, you can have the professor.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me: Goodnight!

John: Goodnight honey! (Make people talk!)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One day I posted a picture of me with a frittata I had made with my students:

John: O.K., creepy smile like you killed someone and put them into the frittata.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And just the other day, I posted a photo with a caption that said, "Hugs: One Size Fits All...pass them on!," and John's response, well...

John: That can be interpreted so bad, lol.

And a few minutes later, after thinking about it:

John: Hugs...wait, that's not a roll of dollars in my pants and not my hands on your tush...they're Myers'...he's not really gay, he's just doing it for free gropes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can see from these few little exchanges the type of guy John was. Though I never met him personally, face to face, he was a constant presence on my Facebook page and I am definitely, sorely going to miss him. As for Karen, my heart goes out to her big time. I've known her a lot longer than I've known John and I can only imagine the pain she is feeling right now. Though she hasn't said much on Facebook today, she did change her profile picture.

For anyone who's followed these two lovebirds as I have over the past year or so, they will know what this picture represents: two lone wolves who somehow found each other in cyberspace and provided one another with great joy and comfort. My sincerest condolences go out to Karen and I want to say to John to rest in peace. You will be missed, my friend!

Six Word

During one of my correspondences with my ex over the summer, he had suggested a website to me. I guess that maybe he came across it in school and he had been involved in it somehow. During the time we had been together, he helped me from time to time to come up with suggestions for journal questions for my students and he thought that maybe this could be worked somehow into my class, especially since I was also a writer.

The website is maintained by Smith Magazine and the particular project he directed me to is called “Six Word.” Now the whole project is too engrossing for me to talk about in this post, but from what I’ve ascertained from it thus far is that it’s a way for people to tell their stories in a series of six-word phrases or sentences. All one has to do is register to become a member and enter in as many six word phrases as you like, whenever you like. In the end, the collective six-word phrases tell a story, a tale of one’s life, or a portion of it, in some way.

It took me a long time to find the time to take a look at it, but I finally did recently and I find the concept to be pretty cool. It sort of reminds me of something I did last year on Facebook called “My Year in Facebook,” or something to that nature. That post allowed you to choose from among your FB posts from the year 2010 and put them all in one place. In a lot of ways, the collective end result was a snapshot of your year and it made for a very interesting read.

Six Word carries much of the same concept, only from what I can see so far it’s much more deliberate than the random Facebook counterpart. At this moment I’m not going to share the ones I’ve added to my own Six Word profile, but I may one day, once there’s enough of a story to be told and once I get a better hang of it. Again there’s much more to it than I’ve said here, and perhaps I will do a more in depth piece on it one day, but in the meantime if you think this might be of interest, check out the website below:

No Excuses

Finally, here's a good chuckle for the day. I got this in an email from my good pal Rich. It gave me a chuckle and I hope it gives you one, too!

Eat Healthy and do exercises daily like granny!

So what's your excuse? Mine is I have no pink panties.

Well, that's all she wrote folks! Enjoy your Friday and the weekend and as always, thanks for reading!

February 22, 2010 - Scoring an Interview; Luca, Luca, Luca; My Latest on AC; Fellow YCN Writers on My Work

Luca!

Happy Tuesday! It looks like a nice day outside and since I have a dentist appointment later, I think I’ll finally be getting out there soon enough. I stayed in all day yesterday and did a lot of writing, which is a good thing, but I think I need to take a break from it today, at least for a little while.

You Never Know

Last night I was going through some old pieces I had written for AC and I came across one that I love. It’s called Keys to Life and it was my adaptation of a similar list written by Michael Thomas Ford in his book, “My Big Fat Queer Life.” I posted it to Facebook hoping to get some fresh interest in the piece and within a few minutes I got a comment from a friend of my sisters. She said that she read the piece and loved it, which came as quite a surprise. I never realized that she read the things I wrote and posted.

A little over a month ago, fellow writer Michele Starkey made several comments on a couple of pieces I had written about my estrangement from him. She was probably the one person who had been rooting for a reunion the whole time and she mentioned often that “you never know who’s reading you.” She was right, for he had been reading my pieces and even made a couple of anonymous comments on them. Though the final result has been a complete disaster, those pieces did lead to a brief reconciliation. I don’t think he follows me anymore.

The comment last night reminded me that Michele was right in what she said. You never know who is reading what you write. After all, I sit here alone in my office, typing away and speaking to no one in particular with my words, yet I seem to forget that there are plenty of people following me through this blog and on YCN. I put out a thank you on FB after I got the complement from her, and I’m saying it here again, too! Thank you!

Yesterday’s Articles

Yesterday I started off with my piece on foreign language songs, which is under review at the moment. Once it’s published I’ll share the link. I also did a humorous piece that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time on spam emails. It’s called Spam a Lot? and so far it’s gotten good reactions from readers. Finally I did my weekly Pop Music News, with coverage of the Brit Awards, new songs by Lady GaGa, Adele’s record breaking week and the new Radiohead album. Though I think the items I include in this series are all good, they’re not getting the hits I think they should. Is it the title? I wonder…

Luca, Luca, Luca

In the spirit of my foreign language song article, I’m posting a video here that I absolutely love. Though this foreign language song never hit here in the US, it’s one of my favorites. It’s by dreamy Italian singer Luca Dirisio, and I saw it on MTV Europe when I was in Italy a few years back. Aside from being mesmerized by the singer’s looks, I found the song to be catchy and fun, even though I have no idea what he’s saying. The song is called “Calma e Sangue Freddo”, and loosely translated it means “calm and cool blood” (?). I found this translation in a forum somewhere in case you were interested in the lyrics. Anyway, check it out:

Isn't he beautiful?

An Interview with Han

Yesterday afternoon I was posting comments on some articles by fellow readers and I came across an interview by long time friend and fellow writer Han Van Meegerin. Han is a prolific writer who’s well known for his interviews. The subject of this particular interview was none other than one of my favorite YCN writers, Nancy Canfield. Nancy is one of the funniest writers I’ve ever read, almost always giving me big belly laughs with her words, something that’s hard to do! I enjoyed the interview and commented on it.

About an hour or so later, I got an email from Han thanking me for the comment and asking if I’d like to be the subject of his next interview. I’ve been interviewed before, but like I said Han is well known for his interviews and so I immediately responded with a yes. We agreed to do it live via instant messenger, which was a first for me. The thought of it made me a little nervous because I’d have to be quick with my answers and write them well.

As agreed, we ‘met’ online around 10PM and did the interview, which went splendidly. As I expected, this one was different than the others and most all of the questions were thought provoking. The piece should be out later on today, so stay tuned…

Speaking of …

As always, I am humbled whenever I’m recognized by my peers for what I do on YCN. Here are some links to past interviews and pieces on me that I’m very proud of:

May 6, 2009 – Who in the World is John Myers?, by Sabah Karimi

Sabah is one of YCN’s most successful writers and she used to run a blog called the “AC Weekly.” She was one of the first people to approach me about my work and she published a piece on me for the site. Thanks Sabah!

July 8, 2009 – An Interview with John Myers: A Must Read, by Ana Maria Alvarez

This was the first time I’d been interviewed by another writer. Ana had been a fan of my work and especially loved my pieces on homosexuality, my Aunt Vi, and my dad’s death. She’d started off with a marriage proposal, which I had to turn down, and the rest was just as fun. Ana has since stopped writing for YCN, but I still keep in contact with her through Facebook. She’s got quite a talent for poetry, so if that’s your thing, be sure to check her out here, and the interview as well!

July 20, 2009 – Why John Myers Deserves the Best of AC Nomination, by Kayla Wardlow (now known as Marie Page)

Kayla is another foregone writer at AC/YCN who I still keep in contact with through Facebook. She penned this one without me knowing and made a great case for me winning a monthly award for the best in music writing. I lost the contest, but to me the article was enough of a reward! Check out Kayla’s page here.

October 26, 2009 – AC’s Sexiest Men of 2009, by Jennifer Wagner

Jenny is an absolute hoot! Way back in October of 2009, she published this piece that went absolutely viral on AC, garnering 114 comments. Being included on the list was fun, but reading the comments was even better!

January 29, 2010 – AC Writer’s Showcase: Lending a Helping Hand, by Abby Greenhill

Abby is one of those people whose inner light shines through in her writing. She is a widely beloved contributor at YCN who used to write regular pieces to help out her favorite writers. This one included me! Thanks Abby!

October 15, 2010 – John Myers Writes About Prejudice and Tolerance for Gays, by Pat Bartels

This was another one of those pleasant surprises I didn’t see coming. During my earlier days at Associated Content, I wrote extensively about my personal life as a gay man, and those pieces got me a lot of fans, including Pat. This one was a great affirmation of what I do and I owe Pat a debt of gratitude.

December 11, 2010 – The Most Intriguing Yahoo/AC Music Writer for 2010 is John Myers, by Charlotte Kuchinsky

This was the most recent recognition that I’ve gotten and I’ve blogged about it a couple of times.

Well, I think I’ve written enough for you to read by now. As always, I’m forever grateful for your readership. Until next time…
