Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Watching the Wheels - John Lennon

Here's a classic song from legendary singer-songwriter John Lennon that's got such a melancholy sound to it, which to me is a perfect fit for the day after Christmas.  The tune was released after his death as the final single off his last, classic album, Double Fantasy.  I hope you're resting in peace John...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Hush Hush - Pussycat Dolls

Today is the last day of school for me and many others across the country as the two-week long 2014 Christmas vacation begins tomorrow.  Needless to say moods are light everywhere and so I think we need a dancey, happy tune to go with those feelings of elation.  Enjoy and Happy Friday...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - The Stroke - Billy Squier

Y'all know that I'm mainly a dance floor guy, but I do love a lot of different types of music, and on occasion I do loves me some good ole fashioned rock and roll.  The year was 1981 and Billy Squier was a dude who came out of nowhere with his classic rock voice and good looks and he definitely turned it up for awhile with this one...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Don't You Want Me - Jody Watley

The year was 1987, and former Shalamar singer Jody Watley broke out on her own in a huge way with her eponymous debut album.  The record was chock full of great mid to up tempo R&B tunes that easily worked on dance floors, songs like Looking For a New Love, Some Kind of Lover, Still a Thrill and this one, my personal favorite.  Don't You Want Me clicked on all cylinders, cracking the top ten on the R&B, Dance and Hot 100 charts.  Watley garnered a Grammy for Best New Artist based on this one and deservedly so.  I remember this was out when I had first met my ex, Joe, and we both had copies that got played out big time.  So sit back, click play and groove to this one...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Don't Make Me Over - Sybil

Don't make me over

Now that you know
How I adore you...

I was looking for a song to post for today's Flashback Friday and I was all over the place...80's? 2000's?  last year?  rock? dance? disco?  I was so confused and undecided.  I'd gone through probably 50 songs and I wasn't happy with any of them, until this one popped into my head out of nowhere. Sybil's remake of the Dionne Warwick classic was a classic unto itself.  This is a song that I do not own...digitally anyway...and so I haven't listened to it for a long, long time.

I'd forgotten how good a song Don't Make Me Over is.  The lyrics are so tender and beautiful, the music is soothing, and Sybil's voice!  Love it!  It always reminded me of Diana Ross' voice and I am only remembering that through listening right now.  If you were around in 1989, you're definitely gonna remember this top 20 hit, which beat the original's ranking by one.  So scroll down just a bit, click play, and then get on to whatever you were doing and enjoy this one while your doing it...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Mr. Saxobeat - Alexandra Stan

Here's a flashback to just three short years ago, when Romanian singer Alexandra Stan tore up the charts with this monster hit.  To this day, Mr. Saxobeat's original appearance on John's World is one of the most viewed posts ever on this blog.  Happy Friday!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Crazy - Gnarls Barkley

I remember when
I remember I remember
When I lost my mind
There was something so special about that place

Here's a classic from not so far back...2006 to be precise...as Gnarls Barkley, a very creative duo made up of Cee Lo Green and Danger Mouse, busted out of nowhere with this fantabulous tune that we can all relate to time and again.  It made me a fan of the Gnarls, who's two albums, St. Elsehwere (2006) and The Odd Couple (2008) have both given me hours upon hours of pleasure. Oh I so wish they would do something together again.  (Cee Lo, Danger, are ya listening?)  Anyway, enjoy...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Under Pressure - Queen w/David Bowie

This week's Flashback Friday song was easy to choose for me.  Pressure is what I'm feeling a lot of these days and I'm always looking for something, anything, to help me to ease that stress.  Sometimes a cool song like this one lightens the mood for a couple of minutes at least and makes you forget. That's one of the great things about music...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Stay (I Missed You) - Lisa Loeb

You say I only hear what I want to.
You say I talk so all the time, so.
And I thought what I felt was simple,
and I thought that I don't belong,
and now that I am leaving,
now I know that I did something wrong
'cause I missed you.
Yeah, I missed you.

Here's a song I had totally forgotten about until I heard it yesterday.  It's hard to believe that this song came out twenty years ago, but sure enough this #1 tune off of the soundtrack to the film Reality Bites was released in April of 1994.  It's the kind of song that you can't help but sing along to, and surprisingly after this long I still remember all of the words.  Check out Lisa Loeb's Stay and then go out and have a great day...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Expression - Salt n Pepa

You know life
Is all abput expression
You only livin' once and your not coming back
So express yourself

I'm beginning a new thing in my classroom today, a weekly lesson for my ESL students using songs to learn English.  I've been pondering which song to begin with, and though this one's a little too risque for the classroom, I've always liked its message.  So even though I won't be using this particular tune with my students today, I still wanted to put it to good use.  I mean, Salt n Pepa were soooo good at what they did back in the day.  Happy Friday!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Turn Off the Light - Nelly Furtado

A friend and I were talking the other day about how Miss Nelly Furtado is soooo due for some new music.  It's been two years since her Spirit Indestructible set and methinks it's about time for something new.  How about it Nellie?  Anyway, here's a classic from her 2000 debut, Whoah, Nelly....Turn Off the Light....

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Marry You - Bruno Mars

I'm only reaching back three years for today's flashback because today is one special day that has been a long time coming and I couldn't think of a happier song to celebrate such an occasion.  You see, today I will be attending the wedding of Arnoldo and Jillian, two people who so deserve to be happy together.

I have a long history with these two, and even though I'm not a big fan of weddings, I am looking forward to this one.  I've written about Arnoldo and his family back when I was writing for the old Associated Content and Yahoo Voices.  When I first met this young man, he seemed to me to be one tough 16 year-old Guatemalan kid, with slicked back hair, arms folded and a great big scowl on his face. He didn't speak a word of English and he was registering to be in my class.  I was not looking forward to adding him to my roster of students.  That was almost eleven years ago.

I learned from that initial meeting with Arnoldo that first impressions are not always correct, as Arnoldo, his sister Mayela, and later on their brothers Jorge and Gerber, exemplified what it means to grab onto the American Dream and carry themselves as decent, hardworking human beings.  It was never their decision to come to the United States, but they understood their parents' decision to be a gift that would eventually bring them a life far better than they ever would have had in Guatemala, and I'm proud to know the four of them, who are not simply past students. They are a special part of my extended family that has grown to include Emily and Abigail, Jorge's other half and daughter.

Arnoldo and his siblings' journey to this point has not been an easy one.  Within a couple of years of entering the U.S., the four youngsters were left to their own devices by parents who in essence abandoned them.  Two of them, one being Arnoldo, were diagnosed with lupus and Arnoldo especially suffered through numerous and serious health issues.  But they all persevered.

A few years back, Arnoldo met the love of his life, Jillian, who worked in the same restaurant as he. I remember the first time I met Jill.  It was quite awhile after they had met, and of course I was a little apprehensive about meeting this 'new' member of the family.  The four kids had brought her to Patchogue, where I lived, and we all went out to dinner.  I liked her immediately.  Her love and devotion to Arnoldo was easily apparent, and I thought she was simply a sweetheart of a person who not only cared greatly for him, but all of the members of his family as well...just like me!

So after having postponed this celebration due to health issues, and I believe on more than one occasion, this wedding is finally happening.  After a daylong deluge of rain yesterday, the skies have cleared and it's a beautiful day...very appropriate!  So here's to Arnoldo and Jillian!  May you grow old together in nothing but happiness and joy, and may I continue to be a part of your lives for many years to come.

- Mr. M

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Check It Out - will.i.am & Nikki Minaj

Video killed the....um...wait...that's not right!  This one comes straight outta 2010 and it's one of master sampler will.i.am's biggest hits outside of his Peas posse.  It's always a fun song to listen to and I think it's a perfect way to start the weekend.  Happy Friday!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Just Fine - Mary J Blige

Happy Friday!  It's been awhile since I've posted an MJB song, and since this is my first TGIF of the school year, I think this feel-good tune is definitely appropriate.  Enjoy!
