Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Unpretty - TLC

Since I reported that Chili and T Boz, of TLC, were getting together to do some shows and make new music, I've been thinking about the group, wanting to post something about them.  For the past couple of years, I've marked Left Eye's death with a Song of the Day post, and this year I missed it.  So maybe this news item was a sign for me to do it before too long (Lisa passed away on April 25, 2002).

The trio's second album, CrazySexyCool, was a huge difference from their debut, Oooh...On the TLC Tip. Where the first one was raw, childish (but fun!) hip hop, the second was much more sophisticated, tackling serious issues in a musically mature manner.  The album was a smash, with the smooth, soulful Creep, the tender and beautiful Waterfalls, and the female empowering No Scrubs paving the way for later singles on later albums such as this one from Fanmail.

Unpretty deals with an issue many can identify with, and that's low self-esteem, and the song was the girl's fourth and last #1.  Check out Unpretty:

Unpretty

I wish could tie you up in my shoes
Make you feel unpretty too
I was told I was beautiful
But what does that mean to you
Look into the mirror who's inside there
The one with the long hair
Same old me again today (yeah)

My outsides look cool
My insides are blue
Everytime I think I'm through
It's because of you
I've tried different ways
But it's all the same
At the end of the day
I have myself to blame
I'm just trippin'

[Chorus:]
You can buy your hair if it won't grow
You can fix your nose if he says so
You can buy all the make up
That M.A.C. can make
But if you can't look inside you
Find out who am I too
Be in the position to make me feel
So damn unpretty
I'll make you feel unpretty too

Never insecure until I met you
Now I'm bein' stupid
I used to be so cute to me
Just a little bit skinny
Why do I look to all these things
To keep you happy
Maybe get rid of you
And then I'll get back to me (hey)

My outsides look cool
My insides are blue
Everytime I think I'm through
It's because of you
I've tried different ways
But it's all the same
At the end of the day
I have myself to blame
I'm just trippin'

[Chorus]

Music News Bytes - Cher's New Album Done; The Return of TLC & Lauryn Hill; The Wanted's Newest

Music News Bytes is a collection of short news items that I follow on the Web.  If you're into the same type of music I am, that is pop, dance, R&B, and such, check it out...

Cher Woman's World

Cher's New Album Done!

Finally!  After previewing her new song Woman's World right here back in November and reporting that Cher's newest album, her first since 2001's Living Proof, was going to be released in March, there was a whole lotta nothing going on from the singer's camp.  Well, Ms. Cher revealed a couple of weeks ago on Twitter that she'd finished the last track with Scissor Sister's frontman Jake Shears and that the album was done!

Some of the buzz surrounding the record has been that it would feature collaborations with Shears, Lady Gaga, and Timbaland, as well as two songs penned by songwriter extraordinaire P!nk.  No one knows if any of these things will come to fruition, but we're closer than ever.  Stay tuned...

TLC Back in Business in 2013

Chili and T Boz, two thirds of the popular 90's female hip hop trio TLC have a busy year coming up.  With a brand new biopic, CrazySexyCool, debuting later this year on VH1, and the girls re-recording some of the group's most popular songs for the film, the surviving members of TLC will be doing some live shows, including an appearance at the 2nd Annual Mixtape Festival at Hersheypark Stadium in July.  They'll also be traveling to Japan where they'll accept a Legends award from MTV Japan, and Chili says that more live shows are on the horizon, as well as some new music which they've already begun working on with the likes of J. Cole and Austin, among others.  Exciting stuff!  Stay tuned...

The Return of Lauryn Hill

Ah, Lauryn Hill, another in a long list of Best New Artists faded into obscurity, recently announced she's going back into the studio after signing a deal with SONY.  The new record will be her first since the celebrated 1998 Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and it follows a long, long hiatus from the music world and a spate of legal troubles, which include $504K owed in tax monies.  Who knows where the 37 year old singer will be musically this time around?  We'll just have to wait and see.  Again, stay tuned...

New The Wanted Track - Walks Like Rihanna

One of my favorite boy bands, The Wanted, is back with a brand new track and it makes reference to a certain mega-pop star of the day.  Hmmm????  The song is a little more poppy than the usual fare from these guys, and we'll just have to see how it does.  Check out a preview of the tune right here.

Song of the Day - Creep - TLC

I just heard on Twitter yesterday that it was 10 years since TLC's Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes passed away in an automobile accident in Honduras. I wish I had caught that yesterday, but better late than never! Left Eye was an integral part of this trio, who had some amazing songs during the 90's, including "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs," "Red Light Special," "Unpretty," and so many more. Though I loved a lot of TLC's stuff, this one, "Creep," was always one of my favorites. Its silky smooth horns and T Boz's equally smooth vocals made this sultry song the soundtrack to many a hot night, I'm sure!

R.I.P. Left Eye!
