Song of the Day - Nobody's Perfect - J. Cole, featuring Missy Elliott

rap-up

I haven't heard this one in awhile, and so I played it during my day yesterday. Ended up having to play it a few times, I missed it so much.  This is exactly the kind of record I love, definitive, catchy raps and a sweet, soulful chorus with good old Missy providing the vocals.  So smooth!

Song of the Day - Parking Lot - Nelly Furtado

It's too bad that Nelly Furtado's new CD came out at the same time as P!nk's!  I've always been a big Nelly fan ever since I first saw her in the remix video with Missy Elliot for Get Ur Freak On.  Ah, her voice is such an instrument!  Anyway, a new Nelly CD is always a must for me, though because of The Truth About Love, I haven't paid enough attention to it.

The album is generally good, though not nearly as good as her peak with 2006's Loose.  Here's one of the highlights, a funky, funky song with an irresistible backbeat and some nice 'na na na na's,' too! I can't help but bop whenever I listen to it!  Check it out:

September 19, 2012: School Days; LIPSA's Tuesday Night Tease; New Music Week

I've been in the right frame of mind for writing all day and now that I've sat down in front of the computer my mind draws blanks!  Isn't that the way?  I tell ya, I'm not sure if it's just me or life in general these days, but there always seems to be so much going on I need about another 3 or 4 hours in each day to catch up!

School Days

Today was only the 10th day of the new school year and already it feels like November!  My population of students has risen and a lot of the newer kids are older, in 9th or 10th grade, and don't speak a lick of English.  Talk about a tall order!  These kids have to pass five state exams AND learn English all within the next couple of years, and I'm the one steering the ship.

I tell you, I sometimes don't even know how I do it, but I trudge on.  My days are filled from morning until late afternoon putting out fires, and handling a million things at once, all the while trying to plan lessons and teach, oh, and occasionally make a trip to the restroom.  And the few minutes I get to breathe in between, all I think about are posts I'd like to post or articles I'd like or need to pen.  By the time I get in front of the pc, though....see above!  Sigh!

LIPSA Bowling

One thing I knew I wanted to talk about here was a new bowling league I started playing in last night.  The league, called Tuesday Night Tease and run by the Long Island Pride Sports Association, is something I've had my eye on for awhile and I finally joined.  I've been searching for a long, long time for a place to meet other "PLU's," other than a bar or online, and I think I may have found just the place.

I was hesitant to go it alone, so I asked my bud Rich to join me, but unfortunately Mr. Deet has suffered from what he thinks may be a pinched nerve (I know, ouch!), and so as of yesterday it was just me and me alone with the gay bowling boys.

Of course I was nervous when I first got to the bowling alley. I had missed the first week last week due to Open House at school, so not only was I new, but I was coming in after the start of the season.  I met Glenn, who runs the league, and was introduced to my first new teammate, Mike.  Mike is a newbie like me and he was the only bowler on our then rag tag team for the first week.

Within minutes, my two other teammates, who were also starting last night, came in, Michael and Ray.  I'd seen both of them around here and there, but had never met them.  All three guys are pleasant, and I'm looking forward to getting to know them better.  The team we were bowling against were old timers, three awesome people by the names of Sean, Tim and Al.  Within moments I was totally at ease and having a ball.

The MeetBalls

When the night began, we were simply known as Team #18, and so we had to come up with a name.  Since all four of us are of Italian descent, one of us suggested we give ourselves a name with an Italian slant, and after considering that The Scungili or The Calamari were more suited to lesbian teams, we decided on the MeetBalls.  I'm not sure if I love it, but it's cool enough.

Since he was the first real member of the team, we decided to have Mike be the team captain, and he fit the bill perfectly.  Mike is a good guy, yakking it up with everybody, giving us all encouragement along the way and he really took the charge by suggesting that we meet for a bite afterwards to get to know each other a little better.  So afterwards, the four of us, Sean and Tim, and two friends who had come to watch Michael and Ray went to Applebees, where we did indeed get to know each other a little better.

In the end, the whole night was great fun.  I'm sure that Michael and Ray and Mike are going to be very cool and maybe we'll all end up friends.  Sean is a huge Madonna fan, which you know I like, and Tim is simply a big sweetheart of a guy.  From what I saw, most of the people in the league seemed very nice and friendly, as well.  This could turn out to be one of the best things I've done in awhile!

New Music Bonus Week

This week has been a big, big week for new music!  Of course, yesterday was the release of the long-awaited new album from P!nk, The Truth About Love.  I've listened to it a few times already and I'm already loving it big time!  Stay tuned for track reviews of all the songs coming soon.

Another favorite of mine, Nelly Furtado, came out with her latest, The Spirit Indestructible, which I'm listening to at the moment.  It's taking me a little bit longer to ingrain these songs into my head, but I'm liking it more and more with each listen.

To round things out, Christina Aguilera's first single from her forthcoming album came out.  I've listened to Your Body a few times also and I have to say that so far I'm a little disappointed.  I mean, it's okay, but not popping like I would have expected, especially for a first single.  Maybe it'll grow on me.  In the same vain are two new long-awaited songs by Missy Elliot.  9th Inning and Triple Threat (the title cut from her forthcoming album) both feature Missy with longtime collaborator Timbaland, but like XTina, neither song has that oomph I would have liked.  We'll see...

As always, thanks for reading.  I do hope to become a bit more regular with my posts on here.  Of course you can stay tuned for more Songs of the Day and those P!nk track reviews, and whatever else I come up with...

Missy Elliott and Timbaland preview new song in NYC

On Thursday night, rapper Missy Elliott joined her longtime friend and collaborator Timbaland on stage at the kickoff of Hennessey's "White Rabbit" launch event kickoff to perform a new, as yet untitled song. Timba had been doing a set for the wildly enthusiastic crowd, performing hits he'd worked on such as Justin Timberlake's "Sexyback" and Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous Girl," before Missy rocked the stage to even more raucousness.

The new song samples Run DMC's "Here We Go (Live at the Funhouse)," and it is reported to be called "Triple Threat," though nothing has been confirmed. It's unclear whether this particular song will appear on Missy or Timba's album, but it's great to hear the two are making music together again!

To read on, and to check out more video of the performance, check out Billboard and Rolling Stone.  In the meantime, check out this short clip:

March 21st, 2012 - Writing Wednesday

Holy Smokes! This blog has had an amazing 48 hours, receiving more than 3,300 page views and counting over the last two days! I don't think I'll ever quite figure out exactly who the totality of my audience is, and sometimes the posts that get viewed surprise me.

For instance, one of the hottest posts was one I wrote last year called Happy Mother's Day. I remember seeing that it was just Mother's Day somewhere in the world just the other day, though I can't for the life of me remember where. That post itself has gotten around 1,500 hits the past three days alone. No matter, the more people click on this blog, the better, so I'm pretty excited to see it doing so well and I thank you if you're reading this now.

As I mentioned last week, I was planning on getting some writing done across the board, and voila! I did! Check it out:

Madonna Reaches Record 41st Number One Dance Record with "Gimme All Your Luvin'"

Last Friday, Billboard had published that Madonna's "Gimme All Your Luvin'" was going to be reaching the top spot on its' Hot Dance/Club Play chart for the week of March 31st. It's the 41st song of hers to reach that pinnacle, which is by far more than anyone before her.

Orlando's Fun Spot Action Park expansion to include new coasters

Any news of a new roller coaster is exciting to me, and a local Orlando amusement center is undergoing a huge expansion that will eventually feature two new thrill rides and a whole lot more!

As usual, it's been another busy week of posts here. Check out what you might have missed:

Apple-y Ever After, from Ben and Jerry's

Ben & Jerry's New Flavor Celebrates Gay Marriage

I thought this news was worth a mention. Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream unveiled a repackaging of their apple pie-flavored delicacy in honor of gay marriage and in conjunction with ongoing legal battles in England and elsewhere. Go Ben and Jerrys!

Finally, The Wanted to release a US album

When I first heard the news, I had to share it! The new record, simply called "The Wanted," is due out in stores here on April 24th. Can't wait! They're also going to be playing here on Long Island this Sunday, March 25th at the Paramount in Huntington. The show's being sponsored by BLI and you can check out an acoustic version of "Glad You Came" in a promo for the show here. Anyone wanna go with me?

Battle of the Brit Boy Bands: The Wanted vs. One Direction

Just when I thought The Wanted were starting to gain some great attention here in the States, along comes this other boy band called One Direction stealing some of the former's thunder. Those newbies earlier today became the first British act to debut on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart at the number one spot with their album "Up All Night", making music history. Congratulations to One Direction and here's to some serious rivalry!

Just Posted to Madonna's World: New Madonna Album Party at The Ritz

Madonna's World blog posted a flyer announcing the latest Madonnathon, which will hit The Ritz on Sunday, April 1st. Sunday, really? Grrrrrr....

The party's going to be called "I'm Addicted to M.D.N.A." and the new album will be out by then, so look for all the new tracks to be played that night. Again, grrrrrr!!!!!

Madonna's "Girl Gone Wild" Video

And speaking of Madonna, eonline premiered her new video for "Girl Gone Wild" and it is fierce! Check out the title for my take on the video.

A Katy Perry and Rihanna Duet in the works

I switched the names in the title, because these two are both very high amongst pop royalty these days. This one's gonna be major!

The Return of Missy...Kinda Sorta

This week Missy Elliot made an awesome singing cameo on a new song by hip-hop star J. COle. The song's an awesome mix of hip hop and R&B and I've already posted it twice this week. Check it out if ya like a little R&B flavor with your hip hop. Can't wait for her new album coming in June!

Back to the Personal

This was my first personal memoir in awhile and it recounts a Saturday night full of bowling and clubbing...

Repostings

I reposted a couple of older pieces I'd written in the past in the hopes of getting them noticed again. One was an old phonology paper I'd written on the unique language of gay men. Check out Gayspeak.

Another piece I republished this week is an old poem about the wonderful feelings that come with this time of year, especially in a place that's just experienced winter (though we really didn't have too much of a winter this year!). Please see Spring Awakening.

Family Matters

Finally, just this morning I posted another poem I had written a couple of months ago, but never published. If any of you have ever had to deal with someone in your life who's gone astray and feel helpless, then check out Open Your Eyes - It's Up to You.

As always, thanks for checking me out!

Song of the Day - Nobody's Perfect - J. Cole, feat. Missy Elliott

I posted this one on Friday when I first heard it. I've since listened to it about 1,000 times and figured I'd feature it today. Awesome hip-hop/R&B combo!

Missy Elliot's Back and Slammin' on Brand New Track by J. Cole

It seems that the things I want to share come in droves...feast or famine, ya know? Any-who, as I was reading up and posting on the new Ben & Jerry's "Apple-y Ever After ice cream, I found this new video by J. Cole also on Homorazzi. I've always been a big Missy fan and I've been eagerly awaiting for some new stuff from the gone-too-long rap mistress.

It's hard to believe it's been almost seven years since Missy last put out an album, 2005's "The Cookbook," but we all know by now that she's been battling Grave's Disease and that's kept her out of commission for awhile. With guest appearances with Katy Perry on the remix of "T.G.I.F.," Demi Lovato on "All Night Long," and now this, Missy is well on her way to her official comeback with her newest set, "Block Party," coming this June.

I'm not too familiar with J. Cole, but I liked this one the first time I heard it. "Nobody's Perfect" is a nice hip hop ballad, and Missy's part is more that of a songstress than a rapper. She looks good, sounds great, and I'm happy and excited to have her back!

Song of the Day - Gossip Folks - Missy Elliott

I heard she eat one cracker a day...

Somebody commented on Facebook the other day after the Grammy's that they wished Missy Elliott would come back and show Nicki Minaj how it's done. Hell yeah! Now I like Nicki, but I don't love her, especially after that strange performance at the show. No, Missy is the still the queen and I think we need her back real soon!
