A-Z Blogging: Adventure Parks - A is for Alton Towers

I've been racking my brain for days on a theme for the A-Z Blogger's Challenge and I've finally got it! Since John's World is a little about me and a lot about all of the things that interest me, it only makes sense to do a theme this year on one of my favorite things in the world and that's amusement parks and especially roller coasters.  Since deciding on this theme yesterday, I've been brainstorming topics and parks and coasters and I think I've got a winner here. There are plenty of things to talk about in the amusement world, and maybe even it'll spark me to write a little more for my National Adventure Parks Examiner page.  So without further adieu, let's start with our first entry...

A is for Alton Towers

Alton Towers is an amusement park and resort area located in Staffordshire, England, and it's a place I've long-dreamed of visiting (if I ever get to the U.K.,, of course!).  The park has long been on the cutting edge of roller coaster technology, with 8 coasters, many of which have provided a lot of firsts.  Check out some of these stats:

Air - Short for Aerial Inversion Ride, this steel monster was the world's first B&M (that's short for Bolliger and Mabillard, world-famous coaster manufacturers) "flying coaster," opened in 2002.  Take a ride on Air here.

Nemesis - This ride, Europe's first inverted coaster, make the mouths of any enthusiast water for its twists and turns, oh, and inversions, four of them, as it flies through some beautiful countryside.  Take a ride on Nemesis here.

Oblivion - Another first for this park, Oblivion was the world's very first vertical drop coaster, pausing ever so slightly and leaving riders dangling in sheer terror before being dropped straight down into, well, oblivion. This looks like a wicked, wicked ride!  Check it out...

The Smiler - The newest coaster at Alton Towers is The Smiler, which opened in 2013.  With a thrilling 180 degree drop right from the get-go, a record 14 inversions, 2 lift hills, and plenty of twists, turns and heart-stopping moments, this one looks like it's well worth the trip across the pond.  Take a ride on The Smiler:

That's just four of the amazing eight coasters located at Alton Towers, and enough for me to want to go to England even more than ever before.  Located in what looks to be beautiful countryside about three hours drive northwest of London, I'd definitely have to reserve some time for this side trip should I ever go to visit.  For more on Alton Towers, visit their website here.

Just a few weeks ago, I reported on Examiner that there'd be a new roller coaster at Coney Island's Luna Park and that it would be the very first time that there'd be something to get excited about, for coaster enthusiasts anyway.  Well, take a look at a new animated video of the thrill ride and if you live anywhere near Coney, start getting excited...

Roller Coaster Trip, Part I: Busch Gardens' Verbolten

I promised yesterday that I would be sharing some roller coaster stories from my recent trip to Virginia and I've just published my first two.  The first was one I hadn't done on my Examiner Adventure Parks page and it's an overview of all the great coasters at King's Dominion in Doswell, Virginia.   Here's the link for that and another one for Busch Gardens.  I tell ya, these are two great parks...KD's got a lot of them, a lot more than Busch Gardens, but the Old Country's coasters are all awesome!

The second piece I posted is the first in what I hope to be a new series of articles attempting to give readers a first-hand experience of what it's like to ride some of my favorite coasters.  The first one is on Busch Gardens' Verbolten, which opened last year as a replacement to an old favorite, Big Bad Wolf.  I was very skeptical about this one when I first heard about it.  Ii remember it being described as a "family-type coaster," which it is definitely not!

Silver Dollar City's All-New Outlaw Run Coaster

News Plus Notes

I just finished my second of three pieces for Examiner on new coasters coming to theme parks this summer, and here's one that piqued my interest.  Here's what I wrote in my piece:

Outlaw Run is one of the most talked about new coasters for 2013.  Branson, Missouri's Silver Dollar City's new wooden roller coaster is the first to be built by Rocky Mountain Construction and will feature three inversions, which is noteworthy news for any woodie, as well as the steepest drop of any coaster of its kind coming in at an impressive 81 degrees.  The ride's first hill stands at 107 feet, but the surrounding terrain helps to heighten that drop to an even greater 162 feet.

Hey folks...Happy Hump Day!  It's the last one of the school year for me.  Now don't be jealous...unlike what many people think, summer is not all vacation for teachers.  Some of us have to work, including me.  Wahhhh!!!!!

Well it's been two weeks once again since my last WW, but at this time last week I was in the hospital after my surgery, so at least I've got an excuse.  In the past week that I've been home recuperating, I've been doing a lot of writing, mostly for Examiner.  Check it out:

Gay Pride is Coming

June is Gay Pride month.  Ever since the Stonewall riots in June of 1969, gay people have stood loud and proud every year to commemorate the event and show some unity in the face of hatred and discrimination, something I feel very strongly about.  New York City, the birthplace of the gay pride movement has the biggest such celebration in the world, and Long Island's is not too shabby either.  Here's the lowdown on both events:

R.I.P. Donna Summer

Just six days ago, iconic singer Donna Summer lost a bout with cancer, something no one really even knew she had.  Donna Summer was one special singer.  She was music royalty, and she was one of my favorite divas.  I've been paying tribute to Donna ever since, both with a week's worth of Songs of the Day and some pieces I penned.  Currently I'm planning just one more piece, which has yet to be written.  I'm just waiting for both the time to do so and deciding where to put it.  

So yes, the Donna Summer tributes will continue, at least for a little while.  I think she's worth it, and I believe the coverage and tributes to her have been too little for such an icon.  She was low key, but she deserves a bit higher key for all she's given us in the form of great music.  Here's a tribute piece I penned in honor of her and the gay community that loved her so much:

Writing Wednesday, May 9th, 2012: Theater; Ziplining; Gay Marriage

It seems that lately my time for writing has gotten less and less, and this past week has been no exception.  Whereas almost the entire month of April was filled with posts from the Blogger's Challenge, I've gone into the month of May with dollar signs in my eyes.  That is, I've been trying to concentrate my pieces in places that earn me money, namely Examiner.

This past week I've posted three articles to Examiner, one to each title I carry there.  They're pretty "high interest" pieces, and so if you haven't checked them out yet, here's your chance:

Gateway Theater's Spectacular Summer 2012 Lineup

For those who live here on Long Island, the Gateway Theater is known for its' wonderful productions of Broadway caliber shows.  Every summer, the theater puts on several productions that are all well-received, and this year's crop sounds like a nice collection of shows.  I may just have to catch one or two...

Florida Eco-Safaris at Forever Florida

I first came across this place from a Google alert on roller coasters.  The article that piqued my interest spoke of America's first zip line roller coaster, and since I am a zip line veteran I checked it out.  Forever Florida is an expansive conservation area in Central Florida that's got a lot of zip lining...and cool sounding zip lining at that!  Check out this preview of a place I definitely want to check out next time I'm in that area, for sure!

Obama's Bold Statement a Long Time Coming

By now, most of you have heard that today President Obama finally stated his support of same sex marriage.  He's the first President to have ever done so and I say what took so long?  Politics, that's what, stupid, ridiculous politics.

March 21st, 2012 - Writing Wednesday

Holy Smokes! This blog has had an amazing 48 hours, receiving more than 3,300 page views and counting over the last two days! I don't think I'll ever quite figure out exactly who the totality of my audience is, and sometimes the posts that get viewed surprise me.

For instance, one of the hottest posts was one I wrote last year called Happy Mother's Day. I remember seeing that it was just Mother's Day somewhere in the world just the other day, though I can't for the life of me remember where. That post itself has gotten around 1,500 hits the past three days alone. No matter, the more people click on this blog, the better, so I'm pretty excited to see it doing so well and I thank you if you're reading this now.

As I mentioned last week, I was planning on getting some writing done across the board, and voila! I did! Check it out:

Madonna Reaches Record 41st Number One Dance Record with "Gimme All Your Luvin'"

Last Friday, Billboard had published that Madonna's "Gimme All Your Luvin'" was going to be reaching the top spot on its' Hot Dance/Club Play chart for the week of March 31st. It's the 41st song of hers to reach that pinnacle, which is by far more than anyone before her.

Ben & Jerry's New Flavor Celebrates Gay Marriage

I thought this news was worth a mention. Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream unveiled a repackaging of their apple pie-flavored delicacy in honor of gay marriage and in conjunction with ongoing legal battles in England and elsewhere. Go Ben and Jerrys!

Finally, The Wanted to release a US album

When I first heard the news, I had to share it! The new record, simply called "The Wanted," is due out in stores here on April 24th. Can't wait! They're also going to be playing here on Long Island this Sunday, March 25th at the Paramount in Huntington. The show's being sponsored by BLI and you can check out an acoustic version of "Glad You Came" in a promo for the show here. Anyone wanna go with me?

Battle of the Brit Boy Bands: The Wanted vs. One Direction

Just when I thought The Wanted were starting to gain some great attention here in the States, along comes this other boy band called One Direction stealing some of the former's thunder. Those newbies earlier today became the first British act to debut on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart at the number one spot with their album "Up All Night", making music history. Congratulations to One Direction and here's to some serious rivalry!

Just Posted to Madonna's World: New Madonna Album Party at The Ritz

Madonna's World blog posted a flyer announcing the latest Madonnathon, which will hit The Ritz on Sunday, April 1st. Sunday, really? Grrrrrr....

The party's going to be called "I'm Addicted to M.D.N.A." and the new album will be out by then, so look for all the new tracks to be played that night. Again, grrrrrr!!!!!

July 8, 2011 - Happy Friday - Newsday - Great News - Some Links

Happy Friday everyone! Today’s a great day. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and it’s humid as all hell, lol. Really, I so hate the humidity. Living just about two or three miles from the ocean makes the area where I live very humid and it’s simply disgusting. It’s the kind of weather where I’m already sweating just five minutes after a shower. Ugh! Anyway, here’s what’s happening…



Newsday

As I mentioned the other day, my hometown newspaper, LI Newsday, sent me a message on Twitter asking for a short interview so they could feature me. I gave them my number and they called with some questions. The woman told me to keep an eye out for its publication and voila! It appeared in yesterday’s edition. Check it out.

He’s Out!!!!!

At 9:05 this morning I received a very happy text message. It was from Arnoldo: “I’m out of the hospital!!!” Though his sister Mayela told me yesterday that he was finally getting out, it was extra nice to hear it from him directly. Today is exactly 7 weeks that he was in there. I’ve been too busy to make any trips there for the past couple of weeks, but I knew that his infection had finally begun to clear and that they were treating him for his other ailments. I guess it worked. Thank God!!!!

Splash Summer

Two nights this week I returned to my winter playing ground, Splash. Tuesdays and Thursdays have always been good nights, and so I figured I’d take the opportunity to return there for some midweek dancing. A lots been happening this week, so for the first time in a long time it was some much-needed dance therapy. Nuff said about that, but I will say the music was slamming both nights and I danced my ass off until the wee hours. It was fun!!!

I’ve been long-neglecting posting any of my writing on this blog. After all, when I first started it that was my main goal. Next week, I’m going to start publishing a regular feature of all of my pieces for the week. I think that’s important considering my writing is so spread out these days. Billboard.com's Mid-Year Music Awards - What a cool idea!

Beyonce's "4" showcases the singer's maturity and talent - I dunno, but this one hasn't gotten nearly the amount of hits I would have hoped for. Beyonce's album is absolutely awesome and this piece was my first ever review so close to an album's release.

Extra-Special NYC Gay Pride Parade - This year's parade was really meaningful, well-attended, and a lot of fun! This one almost didn't get published...they said it wasn't entertainment, but news. So it ended up in their news page a couple of days late!

Cedar Point's New "Windseeker" - Okay, so it's not a new coaster, but it looks pretty scary!
