J is for Jaws, the scariest movie ever!

Do any of you remember that music?  I remember it playing during the opening sequence of "Jaws," seen from the shark's eyes as he (or she?) swam around the sea floor.  Oh, when my mom took me to see this in the summer of 1975, it scared the wits outta me!

I was only a pup of ten years when I saw this one and it gave me nightmares for at least two weeks straight! Though I had always been a big horror movie buff, I always knew that vampires and werewolves weren't real, but a shark?  Hell yeah, they're real, for sure!  Living on Long Island, which resembles the fictitious Amity Island in the movie, we've got ocean beaches just like the one where the shark hung out, and needless to say my in-the-water-days at the beach were halted around that time.

Besides being the most terrifying of films, both the story, written by Peter Benchley,  and the movie, famously and brilliantly directed by Steven Spielberg, are classic, from beginning to end.  It not only gets my vote for scariest movie of all time, but it's also one of my favorites!

"Jaws" fans are going to get a treat this summer when a digitally restored and remastered version of the film will be released by Universal on Blu Ray this summer.  The movie will have 7.1 surround mix and about four hours of special features.  I think I may finally have to purchase a Blu Ray player!  Read all about the new release on Entertainment Weekly and check out my Yahoo piece on the film here.

And remember, don't go in the water!

  1. This is one of my top ten movies of all time. As you say, not only is it scary, but also it contains some of the best humor.

  2. Even though I love horror movies, I've never actually seen Jaws from start to finish, just pieces here and there. And that's STILL enough to make me very nervous any time I go in the ocean!

Wishing you continued success with the A to Z challenge,

  4. I'll NEVER swim in the ocean at night because of Jaws. We do have a fun exhibit of Jaws movie memorabilia coming to town next month including a Jaws head.
